Back Yard Academy

• Oct. 11, 2006 - Wednesday October the 11th 2006

I've been feeling sluggish and burnt out for about a week.  I'm trying not to give myself a hard time about it and just doing the bare necessities so we don't get too far behind.  Today Thom and I read through some agriculture facts and activity sheets povided by The Maize  Tristen wasn't feeling great so he took a nap, which is always a sure fire sign.  We will be going to "The Maize" on Friday if the weather holds out.  It's always fun, we go every year. We also did some reading aloud and I just read to Tristen.  He seems to be on the mend, no major sickness, he just felt blah,, like we all do.  Other than that,,, well,,, that's about it!  We'll try harder tomorrow.

Don't let it get the best of you. I go from "Wow, we are such losers" to "Wow, we're doing great!" constantly...I've been actually looking over some of your pics and feeling a tad bit jealous. First of all, I don't have any pics of the slightly cool things we've done this year--still need to get a new digicam. Second of all, I haven't done ANYTHING cool with Matt, other than what he's done with Elizabeth. I tried to start a fruit fly habitat, but no fruit flies came...I started a spider habitat, but he wanted to return it 'to the wild' after one day. The poor thing didn't move after working on a really ugly, really deformed web in his 'new' home and I couldn't convince Matt that he was just resting...Several other science projects have fallen by the wayside for lack of materials (can you believe I couldn't find a party blower at any store in this stinking town the first week of school!?) I found plenty of the kinds we didn't need, but I couldn't find one of those rolled up ones (to simulate a frog's tongue) anywhere!! Anyways, I've been feeling like I'm failing Matt a lot lately...I haven't really been 'teaching' him much. He just reads, writes, looks up info, and completes his worksheets...if he doesn't do well on something then I go back and teach it to him...Elizabeth, on the other hand, is getting a lot more attention than before when I schooled Bubby and she just played in her room or watched videos. Isn't there a happy medium somewhere?? It never bothered me when Jessica couldn't spell or couldn't write a decent paragraph--I just blamed it on the school system...but now it's personal, you know??!

I think you're doing a WONDERFULLY AMAZING job with your kids!!!! You are so creative and think of things to try that I would NEVER in a million years come up with!! Don't feel guilty about the book work. You definitely even it out with hands-on stuff! I want you to be MY teacher! LOL

What Type of Homeschooler Are You?

Salvador Dali Melting clocks are not a problem in your reality. You are an unschooler. You will tolerate a textbook, but only as a last resort. Mud is your friend. You prefer hands-on everything. If your school had an anthem, it would be Dont Worry, Be Happy. Visit my blog: http://www.GuiltFreeHomeschooling.blogspot.com
