Back Yard Academy

• Jan. 2, 2007 - Back at it.

I'm begrudgingly back to teaching the kids and even more begrudged of using this new homeschoolblogger system.  It's SO lonely now!  I still miss my digest.  Yes, I know, it's been almost a month and I'm still crying about it but it stinks.  If HSB wasn't slow as sin then it wouldn't be a megahuge deal but for some reason it's the only site I visit that just drags and drags and drags.  So all those extra clicks just tick me off.

Our vaction went long.  2 weeks turned into 3 and frankly if I could have gotten away with it, it might have turned into 4.  We just did the basics today.  Thomas was very cooperative and was actually motivated to work.  Tristen on the other hand fought me every single moment.  EVERY SINGLE MOMENT.  Class took every bit of 6 hours today because I was fighting with him.

We started our day with a mile at the park.  These kids are so out of shape!  They couldn't keep up with me by the 1/2 mile!  I was just walking and I wasn't even winded!  I'm a big 'ol woman too!  This MUST become an every pretty day thing for us or I'm going to have 2 chuncky monkeys on my hands.  By the end of the mile Tristen was crying and saying he was going to throw up and he was dying and so on and so forth.  Whatever.  He was fine as soon as he got in the car.

Then we came home and started math.  Tristen did a midyear assessment for the portfolio and I did a review with Thomas.

Language, uneventful.  ABeka is quite uneventful.

Science.  I still don't have a science!  I think I'm going to download one or two of Jeannie Fulbrights Apologia samples to use for the next few weeks.  I'd like to just buy it but I'm broke.

History.  Tom started a study of ancient middle east and Tristen and I are going to take another go at learning the states and capitols.

Spelling.  Uneventful, again Abeka,, uneventful.  OH,,, Thomas's find a word in his spelling book?  Completely fouled up with errors.  He worked forever on that stinkin' puzzle and I went to help him find the answers and they were NOT THERE!  I've gotta send out an email to Abeka I think!

Reading.  We started reading The Swiss Family Robinson

Music.  I composed a duet for Trombone and guitar ( yeah,, it's not good) It's just London Bridge.  Easy enough for Tristen to play.  That way they could play the same song at the same time.  Ahhhh, a duet!

So that's all that's fit to print.  Happy 2007!

I'm as disgusted with the "new and improved" HSB as you. I've griped since the first day.

Just wanted you to know you're not alone!!!

• Jan. 8, 2007 - Abeka - Blah!

I have to agree that Abeka could easily be termed as uneventful. I picked up a variety of Abeka books from yard sales and from ebay and I have not been impressed with any of them. We are doing one on American History right now, and it is such a boring drag I think I'm just going to toss it! I can do better than it with the library and internet easily. Plus, I have a bazillion books here anyway, I could probably do it with what I already have on hand (just have to organize it A LOT better).

• Jan. 13, 2007 - I know you are frustrated but I have to say...

Posted by Jessica (Trivium Academy)
You sure made me smile this morning! I don't know if you know that I moved to blogger, as soon as I saw the new system for HSB - I knew that I would start to dislike blogging so I picked up and moved. I've been very happy with Blogger so far, it's quick and I haven't lost one post!

What grade level of science do you need? I have a couple of books I could send your way if you let me know. Email me, okay? Yes, they would be free. You need them more than me.

I know the last thing you need is another book to read about child rearing but Bringing Up Boys is better than I thought it would be and it'll bring a smile to your face when Dobson is giving you examples of other boys' adventures. Also, Creative Correction is another that I'm finding interesting. The hard rule mamma just wasn't working for us, although I don't feel as if I "need" these books to provide a way for us, it sure does help to read about success!

I've missed you. I love your honesty and willingness to be open-even with your frustrations. Email me about the science, in fact I think I have something you'll be able to use for multiple levels.

Blessings
Jessica

What Type of Homeschooler Are You?

Salvador Dali Melting clocks are not a problem in your reality. You are an unschooler. You will tolerate a textbook, but only as a last resort. Mud is your friend. You prefer hands-on everything.
