April 24 - 30, 2006 Television cuts into family time, harms our children's ability to read and succeed in school, and contributes to unhealthy lifestyles and obesity. Here are just a few of the facts:
On average, children in the US will spend more time in front of the television (1,023 hours) than in school this year (900 hours).
Forty percent of Americans frequently or always watch television during dinner.
As US Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher said at the Kick Off of TV-Turnoff Week 2001, "We are raising the most overweight generation of youngsters in American history...This week is about saving lives."
Our family turned off the TV during TV Turnoff Week in 1995; we have not turned it back on since. So this week we will be honoring TV Turnoff Week by allowing no computer games, videos or computer time. That goes for me too. I will not be posting, or reading the blogs this coming week. I will check the email everyday in case someone would need to contact me. I will be spending more time with my family. ~Betsy
We don't have a family "tv" so we don't need to turn it off. I couldn't remember your other blog. Shame on me I know! I wanted to let you knwo that I took 3 of my children to the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory show Sunday at 2. We really enjoyed it. I should have gotten some info on where you would be so I could say hello. Maybe soon we'll meet. Looks like the blogger picnic may be in June afterall. I need to get Gena and Jen to be here and they are BUZZZYYY bees : )
