Summer Reading Splash
| TOS SUMMER READING SPLASH! |
May 2008 |
| |
We're kicking off the TOS Summer Reading Splash and would like to invite your family to participate! (This reading program is open to ANY homeschooled student - you do not have to be a TOS subscriber or a reader of our E-Newsletters in order for your children to participate.) As a matter of fact, we are so passionate about getting children to read, we'd love for you to share this information with EVERYONE you know! Please forward this e-mail to all your homeschooling friends and share the news about the Summer Reading Splash!
Over the next 3 months, we'll provide lots of great information and creative ideas for encouraging your children to read. Below, you will see (in more detail) what all we have available to you NOW. As the summer progresses, we will add more resources to our Splash! website. You'll want to be checking back often! In the coming weeks and months, we will be offering several freebies and downloads to enrich your family's reading fun!
Summer is a fantastic time to promote reading to your child(ren). Take a break from your regular studies and just spend some time reading to and with your children. We are looking forward to this fun new program and hope that you will encourage your children to participate. Please continue reading below to learn more about some of the awesome things we have planned for the summer. Then, go pick up a book and READ!
|
| Reading Goals
We will be providing you with downloadable record-keeping sheets; these are available in two formats- for younger students and older students.
We encourage you to help your children set attainable reading goals this summer. If you're not sure how to do this, here are some great ideas for you. Let your children take an active role in helping to set their own goals; they will be more eager to read if they are doing it for themselves!
|
| Reading Facts
I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who did not love reading.
~ Macaulay~
You may have tangible wealth untold, caskets of jewels, and coffers of gold - Richer than I you can never be - I had a mother who read to me.
~Strickland Gillian~

Then, each Friday, we will have a drawing of all entrants (those who emailed their answers to us), and give away new books (or series of books) from some of our favorite authors! Be sure to check in each week for a new topic and lots of chances for your children to win a new book!

Freebie Friday
Welcome to Freebie Fridays!
I am excited to announce our December FREE E-Book at the Schoolhouse Store! This E-Book was created for us by a 13 year old homeschool student, Elisabeth Geffken.
The E-Book contains hand drawn bookmarks that can be printed and used as gifts for friends, family, Sunday school teachers, etc. Elisabeth is a very talented artist! Some of the bookmarks can be printed in blackline and are perfect to color or personalize. Several ideas are offered on how to produce economical or more elaborate bookmarks.
This download includes 2 pdf files. One with bookmarks and the other with pretty backgrounds to be printed on the back of the paper making them even more fancy! This is sure to be a great project for your children!
Thanks to Elisabeth and her mother, Michelle, for allowing us to offer this E-Book for FREE. Michelle is the owner of Yes, You Can Publications. You can take a look at her Artful Advent!/My Artful Advent Planner Package by clicking HERE.
Click HERE to download the FREE E-Book.
How about one more bookmark related freebie? DLTK has a great section on their website where you can make your own custom bookmarks! You can add text, images and verses, then print them in either color or black and white. After your kids see the wonderful bookmarks made by Elisabeth, they might be inspired to make some of their own online!
Last but not least make sure to stop by the Front Porch at HomeschoolBlogger.com and check out the 2 contests that are going on. In one contest five winners will receive an autographed copy of the book Sleepy Sun. In the other you can win a one-year renewal subscription by writing a review and encourage others to buy The Old Schoolhouse Magazine and mention the current BOGO Sale.
I'll see you next week right here at Freebie Fridays!
Happy Homeschooling,
Jamin

On-line books and free things
I've been searching around for free stuff that will help the budget of the homeschooler. Boy, are there TONS of free things out there! I've made a small list of some things that might help your school budget.
First is on-line libraries! Who wouldn't love to find the book they need to read right on-line without wasting gas to go to the library and get it! Might not find too many children's books on these sites, but lots of good classics and highschool/college reading. These are just a few...search for 'on-line free books' and see what you come up with!
The University of Pennsylvania library
Alex Catalog of Electronic Texts (14,000 classic texts)
Bartleby On-line (the preeminent publisher of on-line literature)
Bibliomania (2000 free on-line texts)
William Shakespeare Complete Works (not poetry)
Read Easily has variable text font so your eyes don't strain so much reading on-line!
And now more free stuff on-line:
Homeschool Radio Shows
"Living Books for the Ears" newsletter brings you wonderful "old time radio" adaptations of great books and historic stories, chosen especially for homeschooling families, each and every week -- and it's absolutely free. One of my favorite listening sites.
Homeschool E Store "Tomorrow's Lessons Today" (electronic books for download)
They have many resources and one item is always free each week. Everything on the site is downloadable, and not real books.
OnePlace Kids - Here your kids can hear and enjoy the classic Christian radio programs such as Down Gilead Lane, Adventures in Odyssey, and more.
MarcoPoloSearch has the Thinkfinity Search Engine that provides access to all of the educational resources created by the Thinkfinity Partners plus Partner reviewed materials. Wonderful to find lots of information for download.
Bible Lesson Book has a free printable from World Missionary Press
English Grammar 101 is a free online instructional series for middle school through high school.
This free American history curriculum designed for third graders, is 82 pages long!
Weather Wiz Kids has lots of things to do and many projects to learn about the weather.
