American History Quizzes

I was told by friends about this great US History Quiz site:

This has many, wonderful, high school level quizzes to help you remember some important facts about the U.S.'s history. Good work putting this site together, students from the Horace Greeley High School, Chappaqua, NY class of 2004!

Tennessee Encyclopedia on-line!

"The Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture is an amazing collaboration of almost 550 authors who have created the first updated, comprehensive study of Tennessee history since 1960. In the years since 1960 thousands of books, articles, theses, dissertations have been written about Tennessee history and culture; new research fields have been opened while others have been more fully explored; and new collections of primary sources have been discovered and stored away at an increasing number of archival collections, historic sites, museums, and research libraries across the state. As the bicentennial of 1996 approached, all of this new scholarship was ready to be mined, analyzed, and condensed into a single volume representing the present generation's summation of an entire century worth of research and historiography."  visit Tennessee Encyclopedia.net

This sounds like a great resource for our Tennessee history classes!

Pick Tennessee Products

This year give yourself (and others) a Taste of Tennessee.

At the Pick Tennessee Products web site you'll find many locally produced, artisan quality foods like aged hams, cheesecakes, caviar, authentic sorghum syrup, jellies, honey, and farm-direct cheeses. Buying Tennessee products helps keep these farms in business and that helps all of us in Tennessee. The web site also will show you where you can buy Tennessee products locally, where to find corn mazes, weekend getaways, farm related fairs and festivals and much more. For more information about buying locally grown products and helping to support our own great state visit www.picktnproducts.org

On-line adventures

Here are a couple of neat, free resources to help you with your educational endeavors at home.

This first one is a free on-line geography game brought to you by Houghton Mifflin. Eduplace.com/Geonet

This second one is where you can listen to some of Focus On The Family's Radio Dramas "Adventures in Odyssey". What a great resource.

My boys love to listen to Adventure in Odyssey on the radio. Actively listening to programs on the radio stimulates your brain in more ways than passively watching a TV program.

Covered Bridges in Tennessee

"Covered bridges create a charm and mystique that attracts the old and young alike. While the building tradition has long become obsolete, people continue to build covered bridges for their aesthetic appeal, some using truss systems and some simply covering a slab bridge."

Learn lots more about covered bridges in Tennessee and see some great pictures at the TDOT site!

Tennessee Blue Book

Here's what it says in the preface:  "The Tennessee Blue Book is a publication which serves as a manual of useful information on our state and its government, both past and present.  This edition contains information on the makeup of Tennessee state government.  It also contains an expansive history section, the constitutions of the United States and Tennessee, the state's symbols and honors, the most recent election returns, and census information."

I found that you can view the entire "Tennessee Blue Book" online!  They've made these files in pdf so you can read the entire book without borrowing it from the library.  You can also go directly to what information you need about the state.

Check out the table of contents here and pick and choose what you want to read about first.  What a great resource!

Contest for GA, KY and TN

Hello fellow homeschoolers in the Southeast USA!
I have another contest here at the Tennessee blog, it is for anyone who homeschools, but mainly for those who homeschool  in Georgia, Kentucky or Tennessee because the book I have to give away contains information about these three states.  I bought this book at the great Knox County Library book sale over the weekend just to give it away!

So if you would like to win a copy of "Let's Discover the States, The Southeast" (I actually have TWO to give away); please leave a comment here and also please leave your email address in your comment like this (me -at- my domain.com) so spammers can’t pick it from the site.

I would like to run this contest all month, so the many who come here may enter.  I will notify the winner on Friday, March 31.

Here’s a review I found of the book:

Review from School Library Journal - (Grade 4-8)
Let’s Discover the States, The Southeast discusses the geographical, historical, and cultural aspects of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia.  This book would be ideal reference material for students writing reports. The excellent full-color photographs and illustrations combined with a compact writing style may spark student interest independent of required reading. Descriptions of the individual states are presented in summary fashion. Each chapter contains between two and five pages of information and illustrations. A section in each book lists points of interest that should encourage further reading and/or travel.

Product Details
    * Reading level: Ages 9-12
    * Library Binding: 64 pages
    * Publisher: Chelsea House Pub (1988)
    * Language: English
    * ISBN: 1555465579
    * Product Dimensions: 0.5 x 8.2 x 8.2 inches
    * Shipping Weight: 13.6 ounces.

Good luck and pass the word!

Educational Sites - Tennessee

I have this site bookmarked and thought I might share it with the rest of you Tennesseans just in case you haven't made good use of the free resources at Enchanted Learning. Many good things at this site and many are free without joining.

Click here to get to the page specifically about Tennessee history and geography at Enchanted Learning.

I've also been informed that Classbrain.com has state specific educational resources here.  Check those out too!

And lastly, here is a site that I just found called Netstate.com.  It has a link for each state.  Not only one page of state information, but after you've gotten to the page about Tennessee, look at the side bar on the left and there are still 12 more links to specific Tennessee information!  This is really cool!

I've made a title bar on the right column of this, our state blog, specifically for these Favorite TN Educational Sites.  That way you just have to bookmark this HSN-Tennessee site to save all these cool links!

ISBN: 0874020220

This is a guide to selected Historic Sites, Historic Areas, and Museums in Tennesse.  It is made to take with you as you visit the places listed in the book.   Each gift shop or information desk there will "stamp" their passport stamp on their page of the book, to verify that you visited there.  It is for you to see how many places across Tennessee you can visit!

Currently this book is out of print.  But maybe you could find one at your local used book store!  We will be posting various sites that are listed in this book at different times during the year.  Be sure to check back here for updated links in your area on the “Destinations” link under Favorite TN Field Trip Links.

Thank you, Pat, for sharing this information with us!
