Summer Time!

Posted in news

Yay for summer time! With the very busy summer most of us have, I just wanted to let you know that I won't be updating this blog on a weekly basis during the summer. Probably bi-weekly or monthly you will find something new from me.

But don't write me off! I'm still here if you want to email me with any questions or concerns about homeschooling in Tennessee. Or just look around. Hopefully I've covered most places you will need linked right here in this blog in the right side bar.

Have a wonderful summer and check back periodically to see what I've come up with to write about!

Homeschool Mom on Nashville School Board

Posted in news
A homeschooling mother, Kay Brooks, has been elected to the Nashville School Board.

"Brooks, who lives in Inglewood, said she wants to see all children learn, will learn quickly herself and will bring new ideas to a 72,000-student school district with plenty of room for improvement. Metro has 614 home-school students registered, but Brooks said she would not push a home-school agenda."

School closings?

Posted in news

Did you hear about the Superindent of Knox County Schools announcing his desire to close Gap Creek, New Hopewell, and Bonny Kate elementary schools in 2009 and putting all of those children on a mega campus?  Ludicrous.  Do the PS officials think they can solve their problems by making the schools bigger and busing the children farther?

To quote Gena:  Bring them home!

Homeschoolers take peek at resources
By JOEL DAVIS

Staff Writer
February 17, 2006
PIGEON FORGE - The Pigeon Forge Public Library staff is reaching out to homeschooled children and their parents to encourage use of library resources.
Children's Librarian Marcia Nelson held a quarterly lunch program this week.
The regular gathering allows parents of homeschooled children to learn more
about what the library has to offer.

"There is a large homeschooled population in Sevier County," Nelson said.
"I want to serve that population ... (Speaking) as a former homeschool parent,
the library is one of the most valuable resources that homeschool parents have.
It is free. It is in your neighborhood. It is a wealth of information at your fingertips."

Ken Blake, who brought his 7-year-old son James, attended the program for
the first time.
"He usually comes with his mother," Blake said. "This is new
for me. It's been useful."

Each program focuses on a single resource at the library. The Wednesday
 topic was cartooning.
"I always preview new materials so they stay abreast
of what we have new," Nelson said.

Leslie Ruff of Wears Valley brought her three children: Adam, 10, Samson, 7
and Lynsey, 4. This is their first year being homeschooled.

"We thought it would be good for them," Ruff said. "We like the flexibility
of the schedule."
The Pigeon Forge Public Library has been useful to Ruff.

"We've been coming to the library to support some of the curriculum,
but we also want to find out what else is there for the children," she said.

Amy Kear brought her three children: Jacob, 2, Rachel, 6, and Sarah Beth, 8.
"We like to get together with other homeschoolers," she said. "I used to work
here. The library is very important to us, so we enjoy coming."

This is the second year Kear has homeschooled. There have been challenges.
"We keep trying to get out of the mindset that they have to be sitting in a
desk to learn," Kear said. "Life is learning."
