What homeschoolers want or don't want...in a house.

As I've  been looking at many homes recently, I've begun to evaluate some of the strange things that are done in homes.

The number one strangest thing is a laundry room tucked between the garage and the kitchen (or other entry location). How dumb is that? Where do you put the clothes? Who wants to stumble over laundry on the way into the house with all the groceries? Why can't they just make...a hallway for people to hang up their coats or put away their shoes?

Speaking of laundry....Why isn't there a hookup in every closet in every bedroom? Now wouldn't that be nice. I was watching HGTV a few days ago when I was sick in bed. Isn't it too bad that the only time you get to relax is when you're too sick to enjoy it? The mom designed her home and had washers and dryers in all of the bedroom closets. She said, "It makes it easy for the kids to do their own laundry and get it easily put away." I wonder if my clothes would be all put away if I had a washer and dryer in my closet?

I would love to hear your thoughts.....What is the "dream" laundry room like?  Do you have any laundry tips?

Here are a couple of mine...I may have some of them in my book, I"m Going to be the Greatest Mom Ever...Even if it Kills Me!

With eight kids it is easy to get overwhelmed with laundry. I was fortunate in Iowa to have a laundry room that was big enough for four large sorting bins. We had one for dark (cold) light clothes (warm) whites (hot) and towels and sheets. We also had a place for "others." The laundry room was multi-functional. In the winter it frequently served as a nursing room for mommy cats or new baby chicks. ..back to the tips.... We had to do at least two loads of laundry every day. It was easy with the bins...I would just see which one was the fullest, and do two loads from that. I was not interested in always being "done" with laundry. I didn't require all the bins to be empty. I just knew in order to keep up, I had to do two loads a day. So each day, one bin was emptied. Kids weren't allowed to have dirty clothes in their rooms.

I'm beginning to wonder what has happened....Can a large laundry room really make that much difference? Our current laundry room is a small room, but the space is now shared with a very large ferret cage. Hmm..maybe if we sell the ferret....the kids' rooms would stay cleaner?  Ferret anyone?????

Hi Terri,
You don't know me but I have known you through your writings for a long time. I'm a wife and homeschool mom of 4. We moved to Colorado last year and built a house. It's been quite a year! My favorite h.s. book is "Ignite the Fire". I was thinking about it yesterday and how I want to get back to "lessons" the fun way (yes, it's been hard getting settled and finishing our house!). Anyways, I was thinking about you and unit studies and notebooking and I Googled you - Terri Camp Blog. Low and behold, I found you. Thank you for your words of encouragement and care for us homeschoolers.
I also wanted you to know I will be praying for your and your family. I had no idea of what happened to your marriage. It is so wonderful how you and your children have grown closer to Jesus through it all. God is so faithful. Trials are not fun at the present but in the end it's great to look back and see God's hand. I don't know if you ever feel alone but I want you to know you have a friend in Colorado who loves you and prays for you even though we've never met.
God bless you, my sister.
In His everlasting love, Michelle Pearson

Hi,

I think getting rid of the ferret AND the clothes would be a good solution! ;)

I have 5 kids and a small laundry room so I know what you are talking about. I am very glad the the weather is warming up and the loads are getting smaller because the kiddos are wearing shorts instead of pants!

Terri,

It is so nice to "see" you back!!! I remember meeting you for the first time nearly 9 years ago when I was pregnant with my youngest and was going thru some tough times in my marriage. You had come to town to see family and we got to meet at the park and our kids played. Take a stroll down memory lane to the lists at bigfamily.com, and you turned me on to momys.com and quiverfull.com.

I'm down to 2 kids left at home from a total of 8. Hubby is still off doing his own thing, but the kids and I still pray that he comes to Jesus and comes home. In the 7 years since he left God has provided again and again for us, and I see he's done the same for you! He is indeed no respector of persons! We're homeschooling too, sans hubby.

Hope to "see" you around more!!! Say, if you were selling houses in my area, I might have a 6 bedroom one to put on the market soon..... it's just too big for the 3 of us now.

Oh, BTW, my favorite place for a laundry room would be in the bathroom - that way you'd only have to have one set of clothes and you could wash them and dry them by the time you got done with your bathing (maybe one day we could have a microwave drier that dries fast like the microwave oven cooks) ..... Just think..... no socks to find and match up, nothing to fold and put away..... no keeping up with the Jones' or fashion statements, etc..... where is the Jetson's maid, Rosie, when you need her????

Blessings,
Denice

Jun. 7, 2007 - Dream Laundry Room

I'd be happy with a room that was just a laundry room. I almost laughed when you started out talking about where people have their laundry room. Ours is in the front entry way. But that is the only place we have to put it. We just use the back door 95'% of the time anyway.
