Jul. 7, 2008 - The Accidental Nature Study at the Catskills, NY

I did ministry in the Catskills for the fourth of July weekend. I usually spend about four days dealing with screaming children. A Chinese church hires my friend to do ministry to the children. I am hired by my friend. It was not so bad this year because I did not have as many children to work with.
My sons and I became accidental nature studiers this weekend because we had a bird's nest by the room that I teach in. When we came home from our long weekend, I looked up in my Peterson's Bird book what kind of a bird made this nest. It was a barn sparrow and the picture in the book was just like the bird who was sitting in the nest everyday. So, we did a nature study without realizing it.
I never bring a camera, but my friend's daughter had her camera phone and so she took a picture of this bird's nest for me.
This bird made his/her nest underneath the awning by the doorway. This is the nest of a barn swallow. If you look at the nest it is made out of mud and hay i.e. dried up grass. This bird is a beautiful dark blue and black on top with a yellow-creamish color on his underside. I believe that there are eggs in this nest because the bird was protective of it. It never flew too far away and it hovered a lot over the area. I was so impressed with the symmetry of this bird's nest and how it was designed. I always stand in awe of God when I see such amazing work. This bird did such a great job making this nest. The mud is almost solidified.
I hope that all who see this will enjoy the beauty of this nest as I have found in such a great work of art.

I find birds to be absolutely amazing in what they find to use in their nests. :)
