Jun. 19, 2009 - My Weekly Report

My Sixth Grader
I have decided that just writing the RAW report gets boring too. We had an interesting week because the Classical Writing Homer got harder. They want us to do these scene breaks. We have to divide the narrative piece into scenes. He then has to do Theon’s 6 questions for each scene. On top of that, they have now added word copia where he has to find synonyms for words and then rewrite the sentences using the synonyms. Then there is vocabulary analysis. It just got to be more with Classical Writing Homer. I am doing it with him. I will only do Classical Writing until Diogenes, and then I will do something else.
He is enjoying Life of Fred. He works on Primary Mathematics 6A, Challenging Word Problems 5, and Life of Fred on Fridays.
He continues to read Tom Sawyer, Our Island Story, and Story of the World Vol.2. He is almost finished reading Exploring Creation through Botany.
We did no logic this week. We are learning about the 3rd declension in Latina Christiana II.
My Third Grader
My son is very busy with Primary Mathematics 3A and Challenging Word Problems 2. He understands the problems better with the place value chart that I am using with him. If you look at my side bar, you will see that I have a link to these place value charts. Math is still a struggle at times for him, but he seems to understand more. I know that this is one subject I could not stop with him even over the summer.
He continues to read Silver Chair, Story of the World Vol.2, and Exploring Creation through Botany.
He is almost done with Prima Latina. He will get a break from Latin over the summer, but we are doing First Language Lesson 3. I must admit that my son is not crazy about the repeating the definition of the part of speech over and over. It is confusing him. I have decided to have him just read it. It will go better for him. He does not like this curriculum. I think that it is not fitting his learning style, but we are only going to do it two days a week. So, it won’t be so horrible. Believe it or not! My son liked Prima Latina better. He loved Grammar-Land! That was the best.
The most excitement this week was my younger son's Physical Education program. My younger son is in travel soccer. So, we are at games every Sunday afternoon and practices on Tuesday and Friday nights. So, my son gets a lot of exercise. His soccer program will end this Sunday. The highlight of the week was the fact that we won our game 9-0 this past Sunday. The team is in third place. The boys have moved up and are on strong. I hope that this continues for them.
