I spoke to my friend who told me that her daughter was benched in high school for four years and ended up getting a soccer scholarship.  Her daughter gave glory to God no matter what.  Her attitude was she would be the best bench warmer if that all she would do as long as God got the glory.

Well, my son, my husband, and I sat down and prayed together.  We all realized that it was our pride that was hurt this weekend.  This program is soccer select.  It is a much more competitive level than travel, but less than club soccer.  So, we told him that maybe this experience will give him more compassion on other children that are benched or maybe he will learn something new or meet new friends.  We recognized the fact that God is the person who needed to our focus and attention.

During the middle of our prayer, my husband came up with this scripture found in Romans 8:28, "

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

So, we decided that my son should say this scripture while he is on the bench.

Unfortunately, we realize that in the summer select soccer teams, it is all about the winning.  They are only interested in playing the best players.
