Aug. 27, 2009 - Weekly Summer Report

Well, the soccer saga continues. This time, it is a nice report. My son has been in soccer camp all week with his travel team. It was so much more enjoyable. The children were fun to be around and my son felt like himself. He started firing balls, etc. He was feeling like a soccer player again, not like in the summer select soccer program.
This summer is the busiest we have ever been. I did school for the first time over the summer with my children. I will not ever do this again unless it is truly necessary. For my older son, who is now ahead, I don't see this as necessary. My younger son may still need help, but I am still not 100% convinced that summer school is the answer. If my sons want to advance again, it will have to be through a paid program.
My older son completed the following programs so far over the summer:
1. Latina Christiana II, now we can go into Henle I
2. Primary Mathematics 6A, now we can go into 6B
3. Classical Writing Homer A: we are in lesson 19. We will do the last week next week and finish. We will start Classical Writing Poetry in the fall.
He is in the middle of Building Thinking Skills Level 3 Verbal. He is in the middle of Story of the World Vol. 2 and Our Island Story. He will read A Midsummer's Night Dream by Shakespeare in the fall. He will read Plutarch by Rosalie Kaufman.
My older son has almost completed book 2 of Suzuki Violin. He will hopefully go into book 3 in October. He will start with Elementary D in piano. He will start in book 4 of AWANA's TNT. This summer was a time of completion. This school year will mark a closing chapter in his life. He will now be on a 6th/7th grade schedule, but he will finish a lot. He will end AWANA after this year. He will go into intermediate piano next year. He wil end choir at the music program after this year. He will end Children's Church at our church. He will no longer use Primary Mathematics for math. He move into New Elemenatary Math. He is going to do Henle I this year, no more Latina Christiana. He is coming to a milestone in his life. Wow!
My younger son completed the following programs:
1. Prima Latina
2. Story of the World Vol. 1
He is in the middle of Primary Mathematics 3A and First Language Lessons 3 and Story of the World Vol.2. He will start Building Thinking Skills Level 2 part 1 this fall. He will also start A Midsummer's Night Dream, but the Lamb's Shakespeare version.
I know that he is going into 4th grade, but it seems as if he is doing no fourth grade work. He will do Latina Christiana I this year. He will do book 2 of AWANA's TNT. He is almost done with Suzuki Violin Book 2. He is going into Elementary C this year for piano.

I am always blown away by what you accomplish with your kids!!
Summer, for us, is the ultimate "get away" from school. It is as close to a "free for all" as you can get!
