~ Autumn ~

Autumn Trail

"I am rich today with autumn's gold,
All that my covetous hands can hold;
Frost-painted leaves and goldenrod,
A goldfinch on a milkweed pod,
Huge golden pumpkins in the field
With heaps of corn from a bounteous yield,
Golden apples heavy on the trees
Rivaling those of Hesperides,
Golden rays of balmy sunshine spread
Over all like butter on warm bread;
And the harvest moon will this night unfold
The streams running full of molten gold.
Oh, who could find a dearth of bliss
With autumn glory such as this!"

~ Not So Simple Country Living ~

Young Farming Girl Attending to the Geese and Ducks in a Poultry Farm in Idria, Slovenia

Country living is hard work, living simple does not equate easy... it takes alot of consistancy and care to just keep things moving along in the direction you hope to make.

A year ago we bought our first "farm" home on 4 acres and its only been a few months that my husband has been home to be get a feel of this hard work I am talking about(he was deployed for 15 months). Husband did not grow up with barn yard animals he was Town Boy, I on the other hand lived several years on 20 acres where my mother and step father at the time raised beef cattle. I was active in 4H and FFA and my dream was to one day own my own piece of the farm life. Little did I know that one day after many years being off the 20 acres Our Awesome God blessed us with this place.

Lets see since we aquired this home we have grown from a family of 4 with just 2 pets(dog and cat) to 1 pony, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 1 duck,2 geese,5 turkeys and 33 chicks. Anytime you begin to gain livestock your enemities increase and for those of you looking into obtaining your piece of the "dream" must be sure you are ready for the following.

EXPENSES: Our expenses went from just feeding ourselves to also feeding the livestock which can get pricy depending on the feed.  Feed for chickens/Turkeys/Geese can range from $6 a bag to $12 and you go through the bag every 2 weeks depending on the size of bag as well. Despite the cost of feed we try for the most part to keep the animals grazed on a rotation of fresh grass so we dont go through the feed as quickly if they were solely relying on that. But feed costs are still important and a good rule of them is what you bring to them is your reward of what they will give you in return, so cheap may not always be the best. Always research and maybe see if making your own grain feed may yield a positive return... Quality over Quantitiy is the best advice I can give.

HEALTH: Just like if you dont take care of yourselves your body will tell you, animals are the same way if they are not given adequate feed, water and shelter their health will be affected and you will reap the curse of a HIGH VET BILL... Case in point when we bought our pony from the folks we bought the house from we were mortified at the way she was neglected in her hoof care, it resulted with us having to have the ferrier out each month to trim her severely over grown and infected hooves. So what would normaly have been a $25 every 3 month bill turned in to $75. Although we choose not to immunize our animals for personal reasons those of you that go that route may want to look into the costs of deworming, shots and all other Vet related things..before you look at buying your first livestock animal.

HOUSING: If you have animals you know the importance of giving them some sort of shelter to protect them from the elements of the enviroment.  Now sure you can go cheap and use what you got but if you decide to build something make sure you have proper room for all the animals it will be housing otherwise you will end up with some sick and un happy animals. We just built our coop for our chickens it is 8X16 and yes we used all new material... the cost for even using the cheaper lumber cost us a pretty penny...$800(give or take) and again that was only the COOP this does not include the fencing we bought to just enclose the 48X72 Avery....

TIME and EFFORT: Having a farm or going country is not something that can literally be taken as a hobby and do as you please when ever you feel like it. You have animals that are relying on YOU so taking a vacation is far and few between...You also have to take into consideration that your farm is not ever going to stop moving... things will always need to be cared for, replaced, fixed up or torn down.  I cant begin to tell you how many time my children and I moved stock fencing this past year, only to keep moving it again and again because the animals will out grow the current area. Plus did I mention the cost yet of just fencing alone  even a small area(no I didnt lol).....

Plus you gotta have the time and energy to do all this.... between home schooling, hubby working, and trying to make the day work with home keeping... its not always easy to get out side and get some thing done... believe me if you dont do it something will always suffer because of it.

Saying all this do I regret the blessing... NO I do not... each morning I thank the LORD for this place and I remind myself (try to) that its been years since I lived on that 20 acres and had the feel of real hard work at my finger tips, plus add everything else to my season in life at this time that I cannot expect everything to be perfect happy farm right away even if my long term goal is to be more self sufficiant on the land and raise healthy, happy and of sound livestock for breeding. I must take it each day with gumption and grit and lots of thanks. I merely had this post today because of a trend I am seeing in folks who are leaning towards this lifestyle that may NEVER EVER had grown up in it, and the reason for this post was not to merely scare people but to have them really think about it.. I have always believed that in order to be a good farmer/rancher its knowing the difference between being selfless and selfish, knowing when the care of the animals and one self is more important than turning profits and just having the picture of Yea I have a Farm...(bragging) vs Hey I believe in this lifestyle and I wish for others to see the realities vs fantasy before they do more harm than good and allow each person to weigh the pro and cons of this really Not So Simple Country Life...

But before I go I wish to allow one of my dearest online farm buddies give you her take on the Pro and Con of Country living..... (THANK YOU NOT SO PLAIN JANE)

Hi Jeannie,

Okay, here is what I can think of off the top of my head...

Farming Pros
A simpler, purer lifestyle
Being able to put away - always food on hand
Eating healthier - own produce doesn't have chemicals if you grow organic
Develop a strong work ethic in self & children
Prevents laziness
The joy of working the ground and caring for animals that depend on you
A healthier lifestyle (studies show that farm kids that are exposed to animals and good ole dirt are healthier then those that are not)
A natural way for children to learn about the birds & the bees - less stress on mom & dad
A natural way for children to learn about life & death
A good all-around education for the whole family
Never a dull moment
Built-in entertainment - less dependence on TV and electronics
Animals to love and love you back
A sense of meaning and purpose
A deeper realization of God's amazing creation
Your kids won't grow to be sissys (lol)
Lots of opportunities to experience the joy of a job well-done
The romance of farming is alluring, the reality of it is sweet

Farming Cons
Potential dangers with larger animals or farm machine equipment
No sleeping in - animals depend on you every morning
Travel/vacations are limited - you must get a knowledgeable/trustworthy person to care for your animals while you are away which isn't always easy to find + it's hard to leave the ones you love behind and be gone for an extended time.
No sick days - You have to get up and get out to the barn no matter how rotten you feel
No snow days - You have to get up and get to the barn no matter how cold or snowy it may be -- the worse the weather, the more you are needed to be out there.
There is always work/repairs to do - it helps to have a capable husband or son who can mend fences
$$$ - Count the costs before you start - if your budget is tight, it might be a struggle if you have animals that require hay or grain or vet bills
Time - it takes time to train animals and care for them, but it's worth it.
Losses - the heartache if you lose an animal to predators or natural causes and/or loss of your pretty flowers or garden if an animal starts munching on your plants.

Throughout all the pros & cons - it will keep you on your knees in prayer -- prayer for thanksgiving, for provision, for sunshine & rain, and for safety every day; for a farming life is totally dependant upon Him.

~ BarnYard In The Back Yard ~

The Barn Yard

Farm life has its interesting high and low points and anytime you are on an adventure to raising any sort of animal there is always the risk of losing one.

This morning was no different as I entered our coop this morning to wish our 7 week old pullets and roos good morning I noticed one of our Barred Rocks was not moving around like the others that were all over the coop and playing. Thinking this pullet (baby hen) was being lazy I tried to shoo at it to move, it did not except to flop its poor self to the other side of its body. After getting a better look at her I noticed she must have been smoothered last night. I picked her up and right away she just flopped her head to the side and tried to gasp for air..For a moment I thought there might be a chance but once I brought her inside the house she just kept acting like she couldnt breath, plus her body was really smooshed...

Knowing my kids were standing there watching me I prayed for a lil wisdom, and explained what probably happened, that it was too cold for them and she ended up being the other chickens bed and that I was going to have to not let her suffer... My Darling Daughter who is normally the HIGH ANIMAL SENSITIVE gal remained calm while my son is is the normally opposite of his sister cried. The kids watched me as we prayed and put the poor gal out of her suffering.

I then explained to them that to be a good farmer/ rancher of anything is to know the difference in being selfish and selfless, that any animal  does not deserve to suffer especially if no other means of help is able.
They understood... does it make it any easier no, but at least a level of understanding is what makes the difference..

~ The Last Day Of Summer ~

Late Summer Walk

The Last Day of Summer

Yesterday, it was here; boldly infringing
on autumn's turf, dipping between
mounds of golden maples and spilling
satiny warmth across my bare arms.

There was no announcement,
no fanfare, just a slathering
of bright-hued light.

Today, a cold damp slab presses
my thoughts inward; short heaves of frost
portend the fury of approaching winter.

Had I known, I would have cradled
each moment before it rolled away;
I would have marked each degree
of earth's rotation with a wistful salute.

Now all I can do is mold a shell
to enclose the echo
of summer's retreat.

~ Hmmmm Gotta Get Me Some ..... Stuff ~

Cooking and Cleaning

By the title it would appear as though I am wanting to get me more stuff when in fact its farther from the truth I wanna get rid of my stuff!... I have talked before on the blogs I have previously had about decluttering and what not and each time I vow to make a change.... Yea sounds like my pitch for weight loss.... get all excited and then not complete.

Well I am hoping this is all about to change in a positive favor, you see I enjoy obtaining old books on home making and I am not talking about the more recent ones but the ones that were published in the late 1800's. The past several weeks  I began to re read them and found that  have several of these books in particular  list the items one lady of her household would have when it came to cooking, dining, bedroom ect . My goodness they are simple so basic and yet overall functional to the running of the house hold. That I am begining to wonder where we went besurk in our over abundance of purchases of stuff, stuff and more stuff?

Sure I am all for having items in the home that are nice to look at or play with yadda yadda yadda, but when do we learn to say NO MORE, STOP THE INSANITY SHOPPING?  We are constantly bombarded with messages that say we aint this if we dont got that, wanna know how to get your family to love you more this holiday season buy what they want... or didnt get what you wanted get this and really be happy and believe it or not I do feel we live in a madam blueberry world(see veggitales for more info) just because of this attitude...

So where am I going with my rambling soap box moment, well for starters please dont think I am pointing fingers at you... more or less I see more nail tips pointing back at myself in this manner than anything else... Secondly I am needing help here... real serious knee bending, gotta get dirty before its clean kinda help... The kids and I are cleaning house and I have a trash sack full of clothes my 13 year old daughter no longer wears or just never have(another thing..... of over abundance of goodwill clothe shopping)... and a box half filled with things I dont want and have no use for anymore.... Dispensable items that cost me much and now giving away for free.... (sad sad lil girl here) the legistics here of the cry for help come from what else can I do with out? Do I hoard so much(which I never thought I did) or little but just enough that its become a idol?

Whats so bothersome is that even though I am a thrift store buy it second hand kinda gal, I am wondering if some of those purchases was alas a waste of time and money!

What part of the items and things still left in my house is absolutely necessary? What part can I get away with in the cleaning that will make it APPEAR clean and organized but still keep the things?.... How can I discern that which is idolistic vs its ok to keep this will come into play with my heart and how I am viewing things...

Dear friends I am in a pickle and feeling a bit brine here? How are you doing in the getting back to basics of simple living? Any suggestions for this weary driven soul?

~ Next Home Steading Project? ~

I feel another in home project coming on..... and look at these inspirational photo's...

Photobucket

I like that each cubby is enclosed by cloth to help keep an orderly look to it

Photobucket

I really love the warm cozy colours in this photo and that its not to fancy

Photobucket

This is a bit plain but I was enjoying the concept of the closed cabinets

If you havent figured it out by now... these here photos are shots from different mud room ideas. With fall/ Winter upon us and the fact that we are expanding our farmstead to more animals/birds.... which alone will bring plenty of mud and dirty into our home... The idea of converting the utility room aka Pantry aka Laundry aka Microwave area into a full fledge mud/laundry room has been on our minds.... especially since we have not had an area to house our mucking boots and carhart jackets for the past year except in a moving box that has yet to be unpacked.

~ Busy Bees ~

Wow a whole week went by since I last posted. Mainly because we started school and have been busy with homestead projects.

Teacher Speaking to Classroom of Young Girls

SCHOOL NEWS:

Our first week of school went by with no real big incident other than a few minor attitude adjustments with the kids, but after a big scolding from dad I think things will be better. He made sure the kids understood that I was not mom during lesson time but teacher and that I should be respected as such. He even explained that a detention time punishment will be in order for behaviors that are not in check... I have only had to implement it 2 times with my daughter and 1 with son... I dont think they enjoy the sitting at their desks for 30 min per detention staring off into space... The subjects we mainly covered our first week was English,Spelling, History and the Timeline. All other subjects are introduced this week.

Young Girls Painting a Chicken Coop During a Party to Repair a Country Home

HOMESTEAD  NEWS:

The hubby, kids and I have been working on the avery for the chicks, duck, geese and turkeys nearly every day for two weeks now.. We had hoped to have it finished a long time ago but several things came into play that prevented us from just completing it in one big week.. For starters my husbands leave(vacation) ended and he had to return to work, second, during the day we were hitting some high temps that prevented us to be out there during the day( I am fair skinned and red headed) and third we picked up school. The only times we were getting the avery done was in the late evening and the weekends. Its now to the point where I told the hubster that I am not concerened if the coop for the chicks is completed as long as we can get the turkey, geese/duck pens done, because they are WAY TO BIG for the house and the brooder boxes(they are 7 weeks old) where as the chicks are only 5 weeks old and still small enough to be in the double hutch. So thats what we are doing now getting the pens done... I hope to share pictures soon after completion.

Friday, Teddy Bears Cleaning House

HOMEKEEPING NEWS. Fall is around the corner and each new season I like to do a thorough home cleaning, this time around instead of setting aside one big day to do it all I am going to take each section of the house and spend a couple hours focus cleaning for a whole week. Today daughter and I are thoroughly cleaning the Kitchen and Dining room, washing dishes, moving things around, getting rid of stuff and wiping down the base boards... as well as the other stuff that needs to be done in order to have a sparkly kitchen I think this cleaning schedule will work better considering we are trying to finish up the Homestead Project and do school at the same time....

Thats us in a nut shell for this past week what you all been up to? Any big projects you got going you are trying to finish?

~ Back To School 2009-2010 Our Story ~

School House on the Ponderosa Ranch, Seneca, Oregon, USA

I cant believe how quickly the years go by especially now that I am entering my 3 rd year at home schooling our two children. When we started home schooling 3 years ago it was brought on by the severe conviction that was laid upon my heart one day. There was no mistake in that calling by the Lord and the journey it has been since He placed such a strong desire in my soul. I can remember like it was yesterday, the kids were in public education at the school that was down the street from where we lived when we first got here to Oklahoma and I was in the bedroom cleaning. At first I assumed the Homeschooling was directed for our darling daughter who was in the 4th grade and struggling already to keep up, but the Lord quickly showed me it was to be both children.

Both children! How can that be and where would the money come from to help cover curriculum costs, I kid you not as quickly as the doubt came the Lord rebuked me and I repented. He plainly clear as crystal said" Do you not think that I would lead you elsewhere without giving you the means to do it"?!  He has!

The first year we began home schooling it was a BIG adjustment for all of us for you see I had to spend the first year literally evaluating where it was that my kids lacked and where they thrived. I saw my DD struggle with reading comprehension and math, my son lacked in everything so for him it was going to be repeating the Kindergarten year and my daughter pretty much 4th grade again with a hint of 5th grade... What a bit of disappointment it did to my heart knowing we had to spend the whole first year REVIEWING REVIEWING and REVIEWING. Whats even more is that had I kept my kids in Public they would have kept them going in the mess they were in with their education...Despite the pleas from the teachers to the School Administration that my kids needed alot more extra help then they were given... at least I knew that when I mentioned we would be homeschooling the kids both my childrens teachers were EXTREMELY SUPPORTIVE of our choice to home school... which in some cases is rare to hear.

Our second year of home schooling was rough to say the least... because at the time we started school my husband was on deployment that would take him away from the family for 15 months and we were in the midst of a home purchase that occupied my time and filled us with stress. Once we were officially closed on the home, the kids and I spent a good portion setting up the homestead as well as dealing with some important family stuff.

I dont want to entirely come off as though the second year was a bust, because then that would be me saying that what the Lord threw at us was nothing but curses, which is totally wrong. No I have say there were some things that did stand out positive this last year and that was seeing my daughter fall in love with reading and watch her confidence grow  in her math work... My son hit the jackpot too as he started understanding basic vowel sounds and saying them and considering he has only been talking for almost 5 years(he is almost 9) (he was diagnosed with having Apraxia)  it was great seeing him go from a constant battle of I CANT DO ITS to ok here let me try to read this word. Darling son is not up to his peers with reading he still struggles alot with how he says things but I would rather have Progression than Perfection anyday...

Here we are today with entering our third year of home schooling, I am still alive, kids are still here and hubby has returned from his deployment. Yes my friends today marks the begining of another adventure in school straight from home. This year we will be utilizing the Second grade level of curriculum called Adventures in My Fathers World by MFW. We understand that they have a older rotating curriculum for those that have older siblings but felt it best to just use this year. Thats the beauty of homeschooling adhearing it to what the Lord wants of you not what others think, say and do. What I am most excited about this year is the fact I love learning more about our countries heritage and the faith of our fore fathers. It is a dying love that this country is doing to its self and I wish to keep the faith and passion burning for my children. Plus I want them prepared now to stand up for something they believe in less they fall for anything... I want my children to have a voice in a world that wishes to shut them up...

Another thing I look forward to this year is watching my children flourish in their academics and be a light to others that may not have seen good role models  in the home schooling community(media does a fine job of tarnishing) already I have seen a spark of interest with in my own place of worship where there once was NONE... who would have thought that me... a side stepper, swimming against the fish could turn nay sayers into alot of HMMMM can I get more info on homeschooling...

Yes I am excited and I pray that this year will be the year of many positive break throughs, not just for the kids but for our WHOLE FAMILIES HEARTS... So will you please join in with me and pray for all those that are homeschooling, contemplating, or just getting burned out... for strength, peace and endurance to finish the rest that Christ has set before us... that our will is insync with HIS...

Thank You

JEANNIE

~ My Fathers World... Ready ~

Anti Stress Therapy

I woke up this morning totally thinking I had 2 weeks left until we started our school year and that any last minute school planning could be drawn out over these next 14 days. What a surprize it was for me to look at the calendar and see I dont have 2 weeks but 1 till school picks up.   Does the planning side of me want to panic YES, but I keep telling myself the Lord is in control  and as long as I keep focus and not make waste with the time I do have school will start just fine as it is intended.

So where do I start now that I have 7 days instead of the originally thought out 14? With Prayer of course followed by the drawing out of our daily/weekly schedules using The Maxwell Family  Managers of their Home, School and Chores books. This is going to be a big help especially now that my husband is home from his deployment and our previous schedule didnt include him for the 15 months he was gone.

I think anything after the schedule making will be the inventory taking of the school supplies we already have vs the ones we will need to purchase. I did some heavy cleaning of our office area and threw away stuff, so I am sure I might have tossed a few things that will need to be replaced.

Despite the short amount of time I have left to prepare   I am still looking forward to this school year as we will be learning about our countries founding fathers and the blessing it is to have  our constitution. I always enjoyed learning government when I was a kid in school and I hope that enjoyment will get my kids excited too. The pride of the people for this country and the thank fullness for the  blessings we have been given by the Lord are waining and I wish to see my children not lose any of that appreciation.

~ Hello Friend ~

Hello Old Friends of HSB,

Been a while since I typed up over here on the HSB network . I have been busy per say with blogging elsewhere but like the grape nuts commercial " I can come back to HSB and type it again for the first time". Not sure how often I will be able to blog about my daily journeys of homesteading and homeschool since this is a busy time for the family and this season of my life. Whatever I have going I am sure I will share it with you all at some point or another. Saying that I hope you will be open to sharing with me a lil bit of  your adventure.

A personal note to all my friends that have followed me across the WWW thank you for being patient with me and still being my friend... I have no idea why I have allowed myself to become flaky these last couple years since I started blogging... lol. and I am  a RED HEAD....!!!
