Jan. 8, 2009 - Playmobil Motorhome

Posted in Toys

For Christmas I got a Playmobil motorhome. I really like Playmobil toys and have a lot of them but this is my favorite toy!

The top of the motorhome comes off to reveal the beds and if you pull the back beds off you will find storage space for your dishes and food. I made a windshield cover for my motorhome out of cardstock paper because our real motorhome has a windshield cover too. My windshield cover fits on the inside though, instead of going on the outside like our real one.

You can buy this set from all kinds of stores, or from Playmobil.

Jan. 7, 2009 - Camping Snacks

Posted in Food

I like to eat, a lot, so my mom keeps snacks on hand for me to munch on between meals. She likes for me to eat healthy things. I don't mind, I'll eat almost anything as long as it doesn't have mustard on it. Here is a list of snacks I have had on our camping trips.

Raisins
Trail Mix
Nuts
Dried fruit
Apples
Bananas
Oranges
Cheese sticks
Fruit cups
Carrot sticks
Granola bars
Popcorn
Trail cookies

I can eat all of these things without any dishes, except for the fruit cups. The snacks are fast and easy for me to get. My mom has a special drawer for me in our motorhome that is my snack drawer. I have to ask first before I can get a snack, but if mom says I can have one, then I get to pick what I want from the snack drawer. Apples, bananas, and oranges don't fit in the drawer, but I can pick from them too if we have them.

We keep cheese sticks in the refrigerator. I like getting cheese sticks best if we are camping with my Grandpa because he likes cheese too. Then I can give him a cheese stick or he will give me one. My favorite cheese stick is pepperjack. I don't think that's Grandpas favorite because it is spicy, but my mom makes sure we have cheese sticks that Grandpa will like so that I can share if I want to.

Jan. 6, 2009 - Meet Andy Camper

Posted in Websites

My mom just showed me a new website called AndyCamper.com. It is really cool because it's just for kids and it's all about camping, hiking, and all things outdoors! There are activities, videos, crafts, and lots of other fun things to do and check out. They even have an e-newsletter you can sign up for. I signed up! The website will also be starting an online community and blogs soon. My mom and I are really happy to find AndyCamper.com!

Jan. 5, 2009 - What to Wear?

Posted in Gear

When we go camping we have to pack clothes. My mom has us pack summer clothes and winter clothes even when we are camping in the summer. Why?

We pack summer clothes for hot days and to play in. Short sleeved t-shirts, shorts, and sandals are good for this. Sometimes, a hat is nice to keep the sun off my face. Even when we go swimming, sometimes, us boys have to wear a t-shirt. This is so that we don't get a sunburn. We do put on sunscreen lotion but we might be staying in the water for a long time. It's just easier to put on a t-shirt then to keep putting on lots of lotion.

We pack winter clothes for when it is cold. Even in the summer, up in the mountains or the night can be cold. We pack jeans, sweat pants, sweat shirts, knitted caps, coats, gloves, socks, and boots or sturdy shoes. These clothes come in real handy if I get cold while I am sleeping! I can put on my knitted cap, coat, gloves, and sweat pants and shirt over my pajamas depending on how cold I am.

Jeans, long sleeved shirts, socks, and boots or shoes are good to wear when you go hiking so that the bugs don't get on you. Ticks are not fun! I haven't hiked where there is poison ivy or oak, yet, but these clothes are good to help keep the oils from these plants off of your skin too.

When we go camping we pack as many clothes as we will need. If we are gone for only three days, we pack three days worth of clothes. If we are going to be gone for a week, my mom will tell us that we need to pack three, five, or seven days worth of clothes, depending on how much room we have, what we will be doing, and if she thinks we will get really dirty. You can wear some clothes over again, depending on how dirty they are. My mom says, that since we are camping, there is no need to put a clean shirt and pants on every single day.

Since we get dirty when we are camping, we don't pack our best clothes. We wear play clothes. They usually have stains or holes on them. I like these clothes best, anyway, because I don't have to worry about them matching, or my mom fussing that I can't wear that shirt because we are going to town.

What kinds of clothes do you wear when you go camping?

Oct. 23, 2008 - An Introduction to The Happy Camper

This is the blog of The Happy Camper who is my son. He loves camping so much it's his desire to grow up and be a camp host. I hope his dreams come true and this blog is aimed at helping him to learn more and share with others his love of camping.

The title of this blog comes from the honor bestowed upon one of our children each time we go camping. The Happy Camper Award is given to the camper who pitched in, didn't complain, and made our camping experience enjoyable. It's not a bribe; it's a thank you for being such a happy camper. My son has won this award on numerous occasions and he loves being, The Happy Camper.

So why am I, the mom, writing this? My son is developmentally delayed. For now, he can't read or write except for his own name. He is learning though! Someday he will take over writing this blog. For now, I'll be his ghost writer, sharing his thoughts, links to resources, and writing articles that other happy campers would be interested in learning about. Those articles will be a part of my son's schooling, such as how to be safe around a campfire, trail markers, what to do if you get lost, and so on.

While looking around the internet to find my son a subscription to a camping magazine that was geared more towards children, I found there wasn't anything. Many wonderful camping magazines have articles about camping with children, but I could find nothing geared toward their level of reading. If I've missed something, please let me know!

This blog is a gift to my son. Everyone in his family has blogs of their own. He asked me one day if he could have one. This is it.
