Air Expo
|
Yesterday, we went to McGuire Air Force Base to see their annual air show. The weather was GORGEOUS! It was about 80 degrees here in the sun, but there was a nice breeze. Here is Ginger at a display of current military vehicles. Here is Ginger with her brand new boonie hat in her favorite color . . . pink camouflage. It was the typical lineup for the air show program with the Air Force Thunderbirds acting as the finale. However, we all thought that the static displays and the attractions were especially good this year. For instance, there was a large Jeep attraction where you could test drive a jeep on a preset course. The course included a water element, a rocky road element, and a VERY steep hill (both up and down). One display was from the Coast Guard Atlantic Strike Team. It was very interesting. The guardsman showed us all of his devices which he uses in response to different hazardous materials situations. The Border Patrol was there with a bunch of preserved insects that came off of vegetation (and in some instances - people) coming into this country. Oh, and I also had a little chat with someone from admissions from the Naval Academy in Annapolis. I just asked about homeschoolers in general and what they look for in an applicant. He said that they really focus on extracurriculars for the homeschool students. I sort of got the impression of "the more extracurriculars - the better." He said of typical high school applicants they ask for a recommendation from a math or English teacher. He said that since homeschoolers don't have that available, a recommendation from another person would be acceptable. As a last resort, a parent could write a recommendation. He said, definitely, take either the SATs or ACTs. Ginger was a little upset when I was talking to him. Afterwards, she said, "But mom, I don't want to be a soldier. I want to be a vet!" I had to laugh. She was ok after I explained that I just wanted a general idea of what colleges wanted so we can continue on the right path. |
