A Wonderful Experiance

Posted on Jun. 9, 2007 at 2:46 PM

- - -

I dedicate this poem to my LORD for all He had done. Also to my sister Bethany and my two sisters in Christ who on that day were baptized with me.

On September seventeenth
In the year Two Thousand Six,
I stood near the edge of a pool
With my emotions in a mix.

I watched my friend N-----
Then only nine years old
Confessing the Lord with her tongue
Her tones were strong and bold.

After she finished her confession of faith
Her father, our godly pastor
Held her hand and dunked her under water
As she promised to faithfully serve her God and Master.

The next to be baptized
Were my sister and I.
I was rather nervous -
I’ll not tell a lie.

I was assisted into the water.
How very cold it felt!
It was then my turn to testify
How the Lord with me had dealt.

I sent a prayer up to Heaven
That God would assist me to speak,
For I being timid was beginning to feel ill
My stomach was churning and my knees were weak.

I told how when quite young
I had come to Christ for real.
But I had in recent years
Wandered away from Him a good deal.

God had reclaimed my attention
In the recent months now past.
I had wandered far away from Him,
But I was now back with Him at last!

I ended by saying I was very glad
To now be able to pronounce
HIM as my Lord and Savior
My fear melted away - almost every ounce.

A moment later and my Dad
Dunked me under the water.
It froze my face and claimed my breath
But it did not really matter.

I felt so happy - gloriously happy
As up the pool steps I climbed.
I reached the top, then turned around
As my sister came to mind.

Bethany testified in a simple way
It was just a line or two.
She was then put under the water
Following what the Bible says to do.

The three of us walked onto the pavement
To see just one more testimony.
I shivered and shook as the wind brushed me.
I wiggled my toes on the ground so stony.

Standing in water up to her waist,
A---- with the help of her father
Told how she first came to the Lord.
Mr. B----- then baptized his daughter.

The ceremony being now done with
Our pastor prayed for those who the Lord confessed.
I bowed my head in a state of delight
And with a heart completely at rest.

The rest of the day was spent in celebration
Of the wonderful things God had done.
Oh, give praise to our Father above
For what He has done with His Son!

A Celebration!

Posted on May. 19, 2007 at 3:30 PM

- - -

I recently celebrated my seventeenth birthday. What a splendid day I had! I was in the happiest of spirits all day.

Bethany made me breakfast and dinner. She also made me a spice cake and strawberry ice-cream. YUM!

For breakfast we had had: Oatmeal (the cookbook calls it Breakfast Porridge), turkey bacon, scrambled eggs, milk, herb tea and a variety of fruits.

For dinner we had chicken enchilada, salad with Italian dressing and avocado dip with potato chips. (The avocado dip is a recipe that my Mom has from my Grandfather.)

For presents I received:
From my youngest sister: A card, a pack of four puzzles and a picture she drew.
From my eight year old sister: A card, an envelope of things she made, a bookmark she made and a box of stationary with roses on it.
From Bethany: Besides almost everything that I ate that day, she also gave me a pencil and a necklace.
From Dad and Mom Three different designs of stationary (I LOVE to write letters to others), a NASB version of the Bible and a teapot.

Seventeen! What changes - welcome changes - have come since my birthday one year ago. It was in this year that we found and started attending our present church. It was there that God started speaking to my heart through our pastor and I soon after rededicated my life to Him. (see My Testimony)

It was in this year that I was baptized with my sister in the pool of a family who is a part of our church. We and two other girls from our church, each in turn publicly testified, after which each of our fathers’ baptized us.

It was in this year on June 1st that I started this blog. I had shared two other blogs with my sister Bethany before, but in this year we branched out into separate blogs. Mom thought it would be a good learning experience. It has been that and more. It has been really fun. I have loved making new friends here.

I just want to end by praising the LORD for all He has done in my life in this year. The trials I have gone through, the joys I have experienced - all are a part of His plan that He might be glorified through my behavior. I know I have failed many times, but I am striving to overcome my sins. Praise the LORD for all the help He has given and I know will continue to give.

First of all I want to say how honored I am to have been the featured blogger on the Backyard this past week. Thank you very much to those who bestowed this honor on me.

Secondly I want to thank Amanda Read and Alycia for giving me the Blogging with a Purpose Award. I am very honored. In my turn I am to give this same award to five other people. Some of those that I give this award to I am aware have already received this award, but I am going to give it to them anyway.

1. Amanda or SuperAngel I have been reading Amanda’s blog for almost a year now. She is a very sweet girl and she has been a great encouragement and inspiration to me. She writes about her life, what she is learning in school and what she the Lord has taught her. She shares prayer request’s and praises.

2. Jocelyn Dixon I only became acquainted with Jocelyn a few months ago, but I love to read her blog. She is as sweet a girl as her sister. She has often inspired me. She is an excellent writer. Her poems, her life stories, her essays and what God has taught her are all written equally well.

3. Coie Coie’s blog is a very pleasant place to visit. She is lively and interesting. She writes about everyday life in her home in Tennessee.

4. Bethany This is my younger sister. She posts very pretty pictures, most of which she takes herself. She especially loves nature and shows this though her beautiful photographs.

5. Rose Rose likes to post about a variety of topics. She writes about flowers, books she has read, etc... Her blog has a very cheerful atmosphere.

Concerning Contentment

Posted on May. 13, 2007 at 5:01 PM

- - -

Perhaps one of the hardest and most important lessons a Christian must learn is contentment. We are so accustomed to getting what we want, that we think that it should always be that way.

When we are discontent we are being selfish. Almost every time a person is discontent they are so because they are only thinking about themselves.

Paul says “... for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” (Philippians 4:10)Should we be any different? No! We should strive to be content in all things.

If you notice, Paul says he had “learned” content. Contentment is a virtue that can be very difficult to come by. Discontentment can be difficult to overcome. We can not hope to overcome it without Christ. But with His help we can overcome it as well as anything else, for “I can do all things, through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13

Why should we overcome discontent? After all not one of the Ten Commandments or anything in Jesus teachings say, “Thou shalt be content”.

Perhaps it is not said in those words, but I think I can give sufficient evidence from the Bible, that God wants us to be content.

First an illustration from the book of Numbers: The people of Israel were not content with what they had to eat; they wanted “flesh”. For their discontentedness they may have seemed rewarded at first - the LORD sent them much quail to eat. In all reality however they were severally punished. The LORD sent a plague among them and many of the people perished. The LORD was punishing His people for being discontent and complaining.

In Matthew 6:10 Jesus taught that we should pray “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” Now certainly we are to mean what we pray, or we would be hypocrites. If we really ask God’s will to be done, then we ought to be content to abide by His will even when we do not like it.

Jesus, shortly before His death on the cross, prayed that His Father would take away the impending trial, however He always ended with asking the Father’s will to be done. He was content that the Father’s will was best.

Everything that happens, no matter what it is, is in God’s hands. If we love the LORD then “all things” will “work together for good...” Romans 8:28 If all is in His hands and we really wish His will to be done, it is wrong to be discontent when life does not go our way.

One more example will suffice. The tenth commandment, “Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbor’s wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbor’s house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbor’s.” Deuteronomy 5:21 This is telling the Israelites to be content with what they already have and not to wish for the possessions of others.

God may not have said “Thou shalt be content”, but He let us know that content is what He wished us to be.

If we are discontent, it deprives us of cheerfulness and therefore we will not be a “light” to “shine before men,” that they may see our good deeds “and praise” our “Father in heaven”. (Matthew 5:16) Discontentedness dulls our light.

Let us pray that God will help us to overcome this enemy discontent, thereby bringing glory to His name! May we all be able to say with Paul, “... for I have learned in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” Philippians 4:11

Contentment is a blessing
That some do not enjoy.
It is a useful too
We often don’t employ.

For we can not all alone
Content and happy be,
But we must ask God’s help -
And He’s promised to help thee.

He will help us be content
Even in times of trouble,
And we will show forth in the world
With our sadness turned to stubble.

Writing...

Posted on May. 4, 2007 at 9:43 PM

- - -

I thought I would post a little about one of the things I love to do the most... Write! First, I will give a little history:

I started trying to write books and poems when I was quite a little girl. Before I could write I made picture books. After I learned to write, I tried my hand at writing books, but never got very far.

Then when I was eight or nine I saw a poem that my aunt had written for my Mom when she was a girl. I thought it was very neat. So I tried writing poems myself. I had almost no poetic ear and wrote very poorly, but I had fun. It would be years before I started to rhyme my poems. A few months after the poem incident, I started a book called “What Happened When Rose Came. It was to  be the first in a series called “Rose Showalter Minks”. After awhile it was neglected, but when I was 11 I started on it again and after much hard work, finished the first draft.

Since that time I have begun several other books, the only problem is... I never very many of them. I am in the middle of so many that I finally came up with a plan for finishing them: I am going through all my books one at a time and writing a complete first draft of each, unless I decide that the book has no value. If I decide that I will just throw it away and not waste time and space over it. Once I have completed that first draft I will type it out, making any revisions that I wish. Then I will print the book out and give it to my editor to edit. (My editor also happens to be my Mom.) Then I will move on to the next book. Later when I have gone through all (or most) of my books in this fashion, I will go back to the books that Mom has edited and make revisions based on her suggestions and my own ideas. Then I will give it to Mom again and so it will keep going through the cycle until we are both satisfied that the book is polished enough, then I can pronounce it as done.

I have gone through the drafting procedure with two of my books already.

The first of them is called “Princess Grace; An Allegorical Tale for Girls”. The book is an allegory about a  Princess named Grace. “She was not born a princess, for this is a role of action she must choose to take.” (quote from chapter one) The way to become a Princess is to be adopted by the King of the land. To be adopted by the King you must allow his one perfect son take the blame for all the wrongs you have committed. After Grace has become a Princess, she must go through training in a cottage. When she has learned all her lessons, she will be able to enter the palace of the King. This is to be the first of a series written expressly for girls called “A Princess in Training Series”. Other characters you will meet include: Faith, Faithless, Upright, Knowledge, Simpleton, Glory and Honor.

The second book is entitled “ The Tale of the Say’s Phoebe” It is a true story about some birds nesting on our front porch that I embellished. The story is in the words of a mother bird relating a tale form her childhood to her young. I added adventure, yet tried to not add anything that would have been impossible in the true circumstances. For instance, one of the baby birds disappeared from the nest for two days. We had no idea where it went. In my story, I had it stranded on the roof. She was rained upon and attacked by a hawk while she was there.

The book I am currently engaged in writing is called, “The Encounter’s of Christopher and Christina Howard”. It is by far the longest. The other two books are just a few chapters long and do not exceed 30 pages. This book has reached 7 chapters and is around 50 pages long! And I am not half way through!

The outline of the book is as follows: The story is set in olden times. Christopher and Christina Howard find an entrance to an old house in their kitchen. In the old house they meet an old broken down woman, whom they bring to the Lord.

There are a few subplots. For example their Father, a merchant is undergoing the loss of his ship and crew. He is stuck in England while his family are living in America. You hear about his trust in God even at the hardest times, through his letters he sends to his family.

In this book I have tried to be very descriptive in some areas. An example is as follows:

“They slowly advanced to the door. Opening it they went inside. It was a dining room. It had a long table with many chairs around it. On it lay an old dusty tablecloth. In the middle of the table was an ancient filthy tray of old shriveled fruit. Once it must have been a beautiful centerpiece, now however it only made the table seem filthier.

“A large hutch stood on one wall, behind whose glass doors was a very dusty china tea set. On the wall to their right was a huge window with dingy lace curtains. Cobwebs hung in the corners of the room from floor to ceiling like a thick veil.”

I have so many books to finish after this one that I think I have enough to keep me busy for at least a full year! One of them is about my life, beginning when I was eight years old. It includes such events as the birth of my sisters, the death of my grandmother, lessons I have learned, vacations we have gone on etc... I have not quite reached my 10th birthday and it is already really long! I do not know where I should end it. I also can think of NOTHING to name it! Dear, dear!

My hope and prayer is that all my writings (books, stories, poems, essays, etc...) will first: bring glory and honor and praise to the Lord whom I serve. Secondly, that they will be a blessing to others and thirdly, that I may be able to instruct and encourage young girls. I pray the Lord will use all my writings for His glory.

“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” First Corinthians 10:31

The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters ~ A Review

Posted on Apr. 27, 2007 at 7:10 PM

- - -

I recently finished reading “The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters” for our study of England.

The real authors of this book are the survivors of the Titanic, but the book was edited by Logan Marshall.

The book was first published in 1912, just months after the Titanic sank. After a while the book went out of print. It is now published by Vision Forum. The book is divided into 29 chapters which are further divided into individually titled sections.

The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters is a detailed description of the building, launching, voyage and destruction of the R.M.S. Titanic. The book records many accounts of survivors both men and women. Individuals relate of the bravery portrayed by many, especially the men. The survivors told of clinging to any floating device that was available. One man relates his experience of going down into the water with the Titanic. He only survived because as the Titanic sank, it had three explosions. These explosions shot him back up to the surface. The relief of the survivors is also related when they at last saw and boarded the Carpathia, the only ship to pick up survivors. The joyous of reunions with family and friends are recounted. Also, touched upon are other great disaster’s at sea, that had occurred prior to the Titanic’s sailing.

My favorite part of the book was the account of the band playing their instruments to the end. The ship went down to the strains of “Autumn” or “Nearer my God to Thee”. The two hymns are similar it seems and it was not determined which was played. I was very much impressed by the account of a young lady of 25, a Miss Elizabeth Evans, who allowed another woman take to her place in a lifeboat because “Your need is greater than mine... You have children who need you and I have none.“ The girl died on the ship. I wondered if I would have the courage and trust in God to do the same. I also enjoyed the rather sad modern poem in the back of the book written by Mr. Douglas Phillips entitled “Women and Children First: In Memoriam to the Gallant Men of the Titanic”.

I would very highly recommend this book.

Our Rights

Posted on Apr. 20, 2007 at 5:39 PM

- - -

We often think that we have rights. We think that we have a “right” to enjoy ourselves, we have a “right” to do what we want, we have a “right” to live. When we as children under the authority of parents get upset, it is often because we feel our “rights” have been disregarded.

We think:
“I made the cookies; I have a right to the first pick.”
or
“I’m the oldest; I have a right to go first.”
or even when a decision is made for us,
“I have a right to make my own decisions.”

But you know we don’t have a right to do anything. There is at least one huge reason why. Romans says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” And we are told in Romans 6:23 what a sinner's “rights” are. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The only right we as sinner’s posses is death! We deserve no other.

In light of this it is wonderful to then consider that Christ Jesus could come down to die for us. We did not deserve it. Our sins were His abhorrence, yet He came down to free us from their bondage that we may live and not die, for “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”. (Romans 5:8)

Christ Jesus died and took our penalty so that we could stand blameless before the Father. “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” (1 Timothy 2:5-6)

God the Father sent His Son to die for us, who had no rights to live, who were despicable in His sight, so we could become blameless if we believed in His Son - all because He loved us! That is amazing!

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:16-19)

Let the LORD be eternally praised because He loved us "while we were yet sinners" and died for us to cleanse us and make us pure!

About Me

Posted on Apr. 20, 2007 at 3:57 PM

- - -

My name is Rebekah. I am a Christian who tries to order her life according to the ways of the Bible. I believe the earth and everything in it was created by God in six literal days about 6000 years ago. I believe the earth was created perfect and man was given a choice to obey or disobey. He chose to disobey. Now we are all sinners as descendents of the first who sinned.I believe about 2000 years ago Christ, came down to earth as a little baby, born to a virgin girl. He lived a perfect life. He was mistreated and killed, but on the third day rose from the grave. He then ascended up to heaven and if we believe in Him, we will be cleansed and forgiven of all our sins and we will one day join Him in Heaven and have everlasting life.  (John 14:2-4 and John 3:16)

We live in Arizona in the United States of America. It is very hot in the summer, but I love it here! I am almost 17 years of age and the eldest of four girls. I have dark blond hair and light blue eyes. My younger sisters are ages 15, 8 and 6. We are all homeschooled and have been from the beginning. I love it! I like to call myself “The Lord’s Daughter” because it reminds me I am a daughter of my Lord.

I enjoy doing many things with my sisters and parents. I am very thankful God gave them to me. I have a Dad who is very amusing and kind. He has dark brown hair and green eyes. My Mom has hair and eyes similar to mine and is enjoyable to be around.

My 15 year old sister, Bethany has dark hair and green eyes like my Dad. She is very energetic and loves to do things such as scooters, running etc... My 8 year old sister has curly blond ringlets and dark blue eyes. She likes to talk a lot and fix things. My youngest sister is very curious and inquisitive. She always asks tons of questions! She had red/blond hair and very pretty blue eyes.

We have three cats: Keziah, Solomon and Elias. We have a male Desert Tortoise named Ecclesiastes and a Beagle dog named Amos. Amos is VERY sweet!

My mom has a blog called Rambling Thoughts of a Homeschool Mom .... My 15 year old sister Bethany also has a blog called Bethany's Blog.

Our California Vacation

Posted on Apr. 13, 2007 at 6:51 PM

- - -

I was going to give a full and detailed account of our California vacation, but decided that would take too long. Instead I have written an overview of our vacation in the form of a poem. To view pictures of our trip you can visit My Mom's Blog and My Sister's Blog

Now that I have returned
Form my eventful journey,
I must communicate in verse
What all befell me.

Oh, where to begin!
Oh, where to start!
The muddled facts in my head
I must pull apart.

I sat in our van
Full of anticipation.
I could hardly believe
I had finally reached this occasion.

We were to go to California
For a one week long vacation.
The van was fully packed
For this wonderful occasion.

For hours we drove
Through mountains and land,
Through sand dunes and cactus
All wrought by God’s hand.

On one mighty mountain
The clouds covered the top.
We got to drive right on through them
Without even  a stop!

Finally we reached
Our designated place.
My Uncle and Aunt’s house.
Joy lit up my face.

We had a wonderful dinner
And ice cream for desert.
I then was growing sleepy
And not quite so alert.

We put on our new pajamas
We had so laboriously sewn,
Then climbed into sleeping bags
With a tired little moans.

Part of the next day was spent
At the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.
We saw starfish and anemones
And a fish with big fins and little lips.

That evening we went to dinner
At the restaurant Buca de Beppo.
To see my cousin and her family
Was the reason we did go.

An Automotive Museum
We went to the next day.
Old cars from the 1900’s
All around us lay.

In a wagon like car from 1909
A gentleman allowed us to sit.
We got our photograph taken.
In the car we all just barely fit!

After that we went
To an Imax theater.
There we watched a documentary
With corral reefs as it’s feature.

The next day we visited
A Museum of Creation.
The things we saw and the books we bought,
Filled me with elation.

That evening we went
To stay at a hotel.
It was very cold
And I did not sleep very well.

The next day
Was very windy and cold.
The cold numbed my hands.
The wind blew my skirt into folds.

We spent the day at Sea World
A place of some great fame.
Polar bears, killer whales, starfish and horses,
Are just a few things I will name.

After we left Sea World
We went to the beach.
As the waves crashed my eyes
Were fastened to them like a leach.

We gathered a few shells
Then ran away from the coming tide.
The ocean reaches so far that it seems
The water and sky are side by side.

We went the next day
To Balboa Park,
Which has many museums.
We stayed until near dark.

We went first to a place
The Museum of Man by name.
They had many exhibits there
Some of great fame.

They had an Egyptian Exhibit
Containing pots, idols and mummies.
The workmanship on these articles
Showed the as people intelligent, not dummies.

We went to the Museum of Natural History
There I got to both touch and see,
Fossils, both small and great.
What better evidence for a worldwide flood could there be?

The next day we went to the San Diego Zoo,
Where we saw animals of all shapes and sizes.
Elephants, frogs, lions and monkeys.
When remembering these things, my awe of God rises.

That evening we returned to my Aunt and Uncle’s house.
To sleep there our very last night,
I slept very well, but was so very tired
The next morning weariness I had to fight.

Before we headed home
We paid another visit to the ocean.
We gathered many, many shells
And watched the water that was always in motion.

I looked back at the ocean
As we prepared to leave,
Wishing I could stay,
My breath drew a heave.

As we traveled home we listened
To one of my very favorite audio books,
The Cat of Bubastes by name.
I leaned back and imagined how everything in it looks.

Now we are back.
What a wondrous time we had!
I got to see more of God’s creation,
And spent time with my siblings, Mom and Dad.

The fossils I saw remind me of
The flood and everything that died.
Plants, animals and people,
All dying side by side.

The ocean reminds me of the Ark
Which God had Noah build.
I imagine it floating safely on the water
While all outside were killed.

The killer whale reminds me
Of God great power and might.
The humongous heavy creatures
Can jump high in the air as if in flight.

How wondrous are Thy works oh GOD!
How beautiful the works of Thy hand!
The creatures you made are incredible,
Yet You are more incredible than all in Your lands!

I'm BACK!!!

Posted on Apr. 2, 2007 at 5:56 PM

- - -

I’m BACK!!! WOW! It has been four whole weeks since my last post. Why have I been absent? Well, I just got back from spending a whole week with my family in California! It was very fun. The three weeks before that were so busy that I had no time to post. Here is a poem I wrote about the preparation for our trip. It is a little silly, but all true.

Preparing...

Dresses and shoes,
Socks and hats.
Laundry and food,
A beagle and cats!

All of these things
Must be properly cared for,
Made or worn,
Or bought at the store.

For a journey is looming
On the road up ahead.
Not of recounting any thing
I will anticipate instead.

Less than a month
Must pass away!
Less than a month
Before the anticipated day!

Will it be happy?
Will it be fun?
Will I be joyful
When the day is done?

Will the sun shine
In all it’s glory?
Or will there be rain
To add to the story?

There is so much to do
Before that day arrives.
Our house will be as busy
As bumblebee hives.

Laundry I must wash,
It must be clean.
Clothes of blue and tan
White and green.

Pajamas will need
To be created and sewn,
In flannel fabric
Of different tones.

What else will we need?
Oh! So many things!
Yet with the journey so near
My heart fairly sings!

I can hardly wait,
For the day to be here.
I am so excited that
It is so very near.

So where is this journey
Supposed to take me?
What do I hope
To hear and to see?

Ah! For that you must wait
In silent wonder,
Until I return
And break your wonders asunder.

Then I will tell,
What did befell me.
What I enjoyed,
And got to see.

Now of course I am already back and I plan (over a course of time) to post about our vacation. For now here is a picture of the ocean taken by my sister Bethany.

Frost and Spring

Posted on Mar. 5, 2007 at 5:25 PM

- - -

I just wrote this poem in this last week.

The leaves are white
With frost so cold.
Which have blanketed plants
Since times of old.

From sparkling white
The poor plants alter.
They wither and brown
And some wholly falter.

The trees they soon blacken
How sad they appear!
But some will revive,
If the cold was not too severe.

The cold stays so long...
Will it ever leave?
Will the sweet warm winds of spring
These tortured plants relieve?

Or will they hold back
And these lands forsake?
Will the cold return
Leaving more chaos in its wake?

There comes a sweet day
As a breath of warm air
Sweeps up the valley
And the moutainside so fair.

Dark clouds, they come with it,
And with the clouds rain.
It fills up the rivers
And pours down the lane.

It rains more for days
Then it slowly abates.
After the showers
Warm weather awaits.

Jinally it has come
Spring is now here!
The cold is now gone
There’s no more frost to fear!

The plant, they now blossom
Their green leaves burst free.
The air is alive
With the bird and the bee.

Now where before lay
The withered brown plants,
Instead is green leaves
Through which the sun shines in slants.
This cycle will repeat
Until the end of the world.
Each year we see God’s majesty
And handiwork unfurled.

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen - A Review

Posted on Feb. 19, 2007 at 5:43 PM

- - -

I recently read Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen for a study of England we are doing as part of our homeschool.

Jane Austen lived in England from December 16, 1775 to July 18, 1817. She never married and lived with her family until her early death. She was the seventh of eight children. She had one older sister, Cassandra and six brothers. Her father was the rector of the parish in Steventon for about 40 years. She wrote several other works including, Pride and Prejudice and Emma. All of her works, published in her lifetime, were done so anonymously. The author of the books was known as “a Lady”. Sense and Sensibility was Miss Austen’s first published book.

Miss Austen first started writing Sense and Sensibility around 1795 when she was around 20 years of age. It was then called “Elinor and Marianne”.  It was later revised and published in the year 1811 as Sense and Sensibility. The original book, and some copies today, were written in three volumes bound into one book. The first volume contained 22 chapters while the last two volumes each contained 24. Most publications of this book now are printed as one volume with 70 chapters. The Sense and Sensibility I read was an Oxford Illustrated. It was published as close as possible to the original publication in 1811. It even has the old fashioned spelling in it! :) In place of the word “stopped”, the word “stopt” was used.

Sense and Sensibility is about the Dashwood family: Elinor, Marianne, Margaret and their mother. Mr. Dashwood has just recently died. Although he was wealthy he was forced to leave his entire fortune to the girls’ half brother John, leaving them very poor. The family moves to a cottage on the property of Sir John Middleton, a cousin of Mrs. Dashwood. A majority of the book focuses on the two oldest sisters Elinor and Marianne. Elinor is the eldest and is 19 years of age in the beginning of the book. Marianne is nearly 17. The book shows the reactions the two sisters when they each find a man they love and then lose him. Elinor hides her feelings, thereby saving herself and those around her from unhappiness, while Marianne openly shows her feelings, even when it makes everyone including herself miserable. The ending is a very happy one.

One aspect of the book that I really enjoyed was the variety of personalities portrayed in it. Miss Austen did very well in developing her characters in my opinion. My favorite part of the book is the very end. :)

I would highly recommend this book.

The Tongue and What it Can Do

Posted on Feb. 12, 2007 at 7:34 PM

- - -

This is the sequel to Essay on the Mouth

“Who shall dwell in Thy Holy hill? He that walketh uprightly and worketh righteousness and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbor, nor taketh a reproach against his neighbor.”

Psalm 15:1-3

In the Bible we can read many verses on speech. There are verses on wrong speech and verses on the kind of speech we want-hood speech. Let’s talk about bad speech first.

There are many different ways we can use our tongue wrongly. First let us talk about jumping to conclusions. There was a girl once who observed another girl doing a thing she thought the girls parents would not want her to do. We will call her Martha. The other girl we will call Marie. Not bothering to ask Marie why she was doing as she was Martha went in search of Marie’s parents. On finding Marie’s mother, Martha told her in an accusing manner what Marie was doing. Martha was quite embarrassed to find Marie was doing no wrong but actually following her mother’s directions!

Now Martha had done at least two things wrong. First she jumped to a hasty conclusion in assuming Marie was doing wrong. She did not know all the facts. Proverbs 18:13 says: “He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.” Second, Martha when she did come to these conclusions, instead of asking if they were true, told them to Marie’s mother and found out the truth, bringing folly and shame upon herself. We should always ask, never assume. If Martha had asked she could have saved herself from shame.

Also Martha was passing judgment on Marie, which is wrong. Romans 2:1 says: “Therefore, thou art inexcusable o man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.” That means that the things you judge other people about, you also do yourself. That can be rather embarrassing if pointed out while you are passing judgment. We know to be like Jesus we must not wrongly judge others.

Something else people do is gossip and spread rumors about others. If a friend tells you a private thing about themselves or a rumor or story about someone else, keep it to yourself. What if the person the rumor or story is about hears of and it hurts them. Or if someone had told only you about their private thing because they trusted you and they heard it repeated else where, it could hurt them and it could really destroy your friendship. The Bible tells us, “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil-speaking be put away from you with all malice. And be ye kind to one another, tenderhearted... Let’s stop there… tenderhearted. I think that those who are kind to others and tenderhearted won’t repeat something unkind, rude or even just ridiculously silly or embarrassing someone else did, to another person. It might really hurt the person whom the story is about.

Something many children have had a problem with (including myself) is inappropriate speech to our parents. In Ephesians 6:2 it says: “Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise.” Now this verse says two things. First it says to honor our parents. If we do that we will always be respectful, even when we don’t agree with them. We won’t ever argue, talk back, yell at them or say things we would not say to Jesus to them. The second thing it says is that this is “the first commandment with promise”. Meaning it is the first commandment to have a promise with it. What promise is that? Well if we continue to read onto verse 3, it says: “That it may be well with tee, and thou mayest live long in the earth.” So if we honor our parents God will bless us.

Next I want to speak about good speech. In Proverbs 25:11 it says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.” If we speak the right word at the right time it can really be prized.

In Proverbs 12:25 it tells us: “Heaviness in the heart of a man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.” That verse is telling that trouble can make a person depressed but a gook word can help them and make them glad.

There are other things which I could find to write about, but I shall save them for a future volume.

“If any man among you seem to be religious and bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his own heart; this mans religion is in vain.”  James 3:5

“…Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.”  James 1:19-20

“A soft answer turneth away wrath; but grievous words stir up anger.”   Proverbs 15: 1

The Bible and Pharaoh's

Posted on Feb. 2, 2007 at 8:39 PM

- - -

This is a review of the book “Unwrapping the Pharaoh’s How Egyptian Archaeology Confirms the Biblical Timeline”. I bought this book with some Christmas money I was given by my grandparents.

This book was just published last year. It was written by Dr. John Ashton and Dr. David Down. I do not know much about Dr. Ashton, but I know a little about Dr. Down. He is an archaeologist who has excavated in Egypt, Israel and the Middle East. He is a biblical, young earth creationist. Here is a link to an interview Timing is Everything published in the Answer’s in Genesis Australian magazine Creation, (the US magazine is Answers). This article is an interview that discusses Dr. Down’s testimony. It also partially covers some of the topics discussed in the book.

The authors purpose is to show how easily you can harmonize Egyptian chronology and archaeology with the Bible.

Unwrapping the Pharaoh's contains many interesting facts about the history of Ancient Egypt. Archaological finds and places are compared with the Bible's historical account. This book explains that the traditional chronology given to Ancient Egypt needs to be dramatically shortened.

It identifies people in Ancient Egypt with people in the Bible, showing discoveries found that seem to support their theories. For example: It is possible that a famous pharaoh by the name of Khufu was the same Pharaoh that was reining during Abraham’s visit to Egypt. He would also have been the Pharaoh that took Sarah into his house and suffered from plagues because of her (Genesis 12). Also, a woman who assumed the responsibilities of Pharaoh named Hatshepsut could have been also the Queen of Sheba who visited King Solomon in the book of First Kings.

This book contains many beautiful photographs. Statues, tombs, pyramids, mummies, treasures, paintings, hieroglyphs, jewelery, landscapes and more are present on nearly every page.

An added bonus is a DVD that accompanies this book. I have been unable to watch this as we intend to view it as a family. I will write a review after I am able to see it.

One important aspect of this book that I really enjoyed was that the authors communicate with the belief that the Bible is the infallible word of God, while the theories and tales of man are fallible.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the study of Egypt from a biblical point of view.

Essay on the Mouth

Posted on Jan. 25, 2007 at 11:55 AM

- - -

I have a great desire to encourage and inspire other girls - especially those younger than me. The posts in this category are just for that. The category is called "To Young Girls", but of course any one may read the entries. I hope and pray that these posts will be a blessing to someone.

The Bible says many things about the good of speech, bur it also says many things about the evil of speech.

It says in James 1:26 “If any man among you seem to be religious and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this mans religion is in vain.” That seems very hard. I know I have a very hard time bridling my tongue. I don’t think I ever thought of it in that way before.

Again later James says, “Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold how great a matter a little fire kindleth.” (James 3:5) I am sure that is true. I know many times one word I say, kind or unkind can make a large argument. That shows the importance of bridling ones tongue.

Something we do harmful with our tongues is tattletale. The Bible says “The words of a talebearer are as wounds and they go into the innermost parts of the belly. (Proverbs 18:8) It repeats those exact words twice in Proverbs~ I know from experience that that verse is very true. Why then would I want to do it to others? I shouldn’t. I should just let it go. Not that I should refrain from telling if I know I should. That would be wrong. Every time I go to tell I should ask myself, “Would Jesus tell on this?” And if He would, I should, and if He wouldn’t I shouldn’t. As a Christian I should try my very best to follow His lead.

Another thing we tend to do, (at least I do) is judge out loud before I should. The Apostle Paul says in Romans 2:1, “Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.” That verse also is entirely true. I do, do the exact things sometimes about what I judge my sister. That is also wrong.

Another thing done with the tongue is we fight back, which means we say something mean back. If someone says something mean or rude to us we fight back, which means we say something mean back. That also is wrong. 1 Peter 2:9 says, “Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing...” I know I don’t bless those that say mean things to me very often.

Another thing we are to do (especially children) is not to talk back to our parents or speak meanly to them. “Honor thy father and thy mother…” (Ephesians 6:2) Speaking meanly or talking back is definitely not honoring our parents. I have a problem with that.

Another thing I do is speak for no reason - idle talk. That is wrong. Jesus says in Matthew 12:36-37, “But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words shalt thou be justified and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”

Lastly I tend to murmur or complain in ingratitude. That is wrong. Proverbs 17:13 says, “Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.”

If I researched a little more I might be able to go on, but I think that is enough to show me how much evil I do with my mouth. I better be more careful in days to come.

Love in Christ,
Rebekah ~ The Lord's Daughter

One more time...

Posted on Jan. 19, 2007 at 2:33 PM

I wrote a post a few minutes ago, but when I tried to publish it I lost it!

Oh, well.

I was writing about how much I love rain. It has been raining all day and on top of that it is VERY cold. It is in the lower to middle 40's. It is so wet and cold our dog does not even like it - he has not tried to go outside to play at all today!

Sometimes when it is raining, I think about the flood of Noah. Though I love rain, thunder and lightning, I can imagine how dreadful it would have been to the people outside of the ark on that day.

Great flashes from the sky, the earth trembling as the fountains of the great deep erupted, thunder blasting through the air like the sound of a trumpet... Those outdoors must have ran home in terror. Those at home may have run outside.

As the flood waters started to rise, perhaps they ran to the hills, or crawled onto the roofs of their houses. It must have been a dreadful time!

Then I wonder what it was like to be in the ark. The crashes of thunder must have been magnified or perhaps it was built in such a way that instead they were quieter? As the waters rose and the boat swayed back and forth - or perhaps the boat was so big that it barely moved. It must have been an interesting experience and yet sad at the same time as the rest of the population -  humans and beasts - perished under the waters.

How blessed Noah and his family must have felt that God chose them to survive the flood!

Just thought I would share my thoughts...

Rebekah ~ The Lord's Daughter

P.S. It is raining pretty hard right now!
