The Luthers Life

May. 11, 2008 - Spring Cleaning: Time for A Dumpster : Unschooling

Every year around this time, I spend a good week cleaning and doing little odds and ends projects that I never get done through out the year, before we play for the summer. We spend alot of our summer out enjoying sunshine and nature. I get most of my science for the year done in the summer. Anyways we started today. Tommorrow's chore. Our school room. It needs to get organized. I am moving everything back upstairs. It has been in my dinning room for the last couple years overtaking my house which seemed neccessary with my husband's schedule. We are going to try it upstairs again and see how it goes. I also want to move even closer to unschooling next year. I have wanted to do this for awhile but have felt the pressure to stick closer to a curriculum. So next year will be alot different for us. I want our life to be a learning life with no structured sit down time but with plenty of structure. I know this doesn't work for everybody but those of you who know me know how motivated I am and that it will work for me. We will stick to a math curriculum and I will design the Language arts, history and science unit studies. We will also do alot more store learning. So it will be a busy week , with all of the cleaning,we will be getting in lots of home ec.LOL and gardening and woodworking(repairing things) and art(painting two rooms) and last but not least lots of cooking! I really get ready for summer around this time of year and irritable. I was telling some friends the other day it was my time of the year(not month). I can never say this enough. I love that God has given me the blessed opportunity to educate my children at home and hope that God will bless more and more people to have the same opportunity.

Good luck with cleaning your school room. I would love to hear how the unschooling works for you. Since I used to teach, I still find myself clinging to the textbooks even though they are boring. I'm working to make school more fun.

Sounds like you know what will work for you and what Gods callign you to -- as far as the unschooling goes. I'm still not completly sure what unschooling means -- but it sounds similar to Charlotte Mason.

The spring cleaning and all the fun activities you have planned should keep you busy for a while. I'm looking forward to seeing all the pics!

We do a lot of Charlotte Mason style in our homeschool, which is similar to unschooling in a way. I know for sure each family is different. God has been faithful to take us down the right road to what works for us. Blessings on your planning for your new schoolyear.

That's great that you're trying a new approach to hsing. Although I don't call ourselves unschoolers, we too have a more relaxed view of education. Math is required, and language arts have never been a problem. I always say, use the books, don't let them use you!
My oldest dd is a self motivated, academic type, so she is probably more of a classic learner and likes the books, etc. My youngest, she is definitely more laid back in learning style. It's a lot of fun to learn hands on and experience life day to day, there's so much to learn that way.
Thanks for stopping by to say hello and I hope you had a wonderful mom's day.

Well, it sounds like you are on your way! Best of luck to you in your journey on your desire to unschool!

I have spent a good amount of time lately looking into the differnet methods of schooling as well. I think this coming year we are leaning more towards Unit Studies. I have found some wonderful resources and can't wait to get started.

I pray that you and your family have much success!

Blessings~

My mom is trying to do the same thing to my siblings. It seems to be working pretty well.

Thought you would also like to know that my book is now done and available on Amazon and other online stores :D.
