Dec. 27, 2009 - More Interesting Tidbits

Since I started a category on interesting tidbits from my life, I frequently brain-storm to see if I left out any.  Well.....I did!

My Uncle Chet used to play college basketball with actor Chuck Connors.  (If you remember him, you are showing your age!)

Several years ago, dd was doing a scrapbook with postcards from every state.  One postcard she got was from Governor Mike Huckabee.

Famous people I've seen in person:

  • Lisa Whelchel came to speak at our local high school several years ago.
  • Ronnie Milsap
  • Loverboy
  • Ricky Skaggs
  • Carl Perkins (from Blue Suede Shoes fame)
  • Fats Domino

I've seen several others, but all I can picture is their face!  I can't remember the names!

Dec. 26, 2009 - Casey is missing

Our  has been missing since late on Christmas Eve.  This isn't like him, so it has us very concerned.  My heart aches for dd, who will take it the hardest if he doesn't return home.  I can't even begin to tell you how many times the three of us have gone to the back door to look out and see if he has returned home.

UPDATE:  After nearly 48 hours of being gone,  finally came home.    Since it had started snowing, I sent Rachel out to see if she could find tracks from where he walked.    Smart cat -- he walked right up next to the house so there were no tracks to follow!

Dec. 25, 2009 - Christmas Day

Well, I didn't make it to work today, due to injuring my back yesterday when I slipped on the ice on the sidewalk at the hospital.  I hated it that I couldn't go in this evening.  I was really looking forward to it.  Not only that, but now a coworker had to interrupt her Christmas plans to cover my shift.

After taking a long , due to the side-effects from the muscle relaxer, I pinched the nerve again when I tried to get up from the couch.  For a while, I couldn't move without screaming in pain.  It was awful.

Now I'm on vacation for three days, and will likely spend most of it flat on my back.

A side note -- I did manage to go to my parents' house for a short while last night.  About the time my back started hurting badly, we headed out to come home so I could get the ice on it again.

Dec. 24, 2009 - Christmas Eve in ER

When I got to work, the sidewalks were completely covered in ice.  I slipped a couple of times and wrenched my back really bad.  When my coworker saw that I could barely walk, she sent me to ER to see the doctor and fill out an incident report.  Dr. gave me a shot of toridol (sp?) and two scripts.  One for pain/one muscle relaxer.  I am due to be back to work tomorrow for the afternoon shift in ER.  Please pray that I can make it.  The pay will be fantastic because it will be time and a half + the afternoon shift differential.  (And we need me to work!)

Side note:  I missed out on Thanksgiving with my side of the family, and now it looks like I will miss out on Christmas with my side of the family.    I am thankful that I have a job, and that it's a job I enjoy, but it still makes it very to know that I am missing out on being with my family on the two biggest holidays of the year.  With my dad's health issues, I wonder if he will even be here next year.

Dec. 22, 2009 - Twas the Week Before Christmas

Good day to you!  I hope this finds you all ready for the big day.  We are done with our shopping.  I do need to get busy wrapping, though.  It's the one thing that I always put off as long as I can.  I always think that will be different the next year.

Our week is not going to my plan.  I had set up to be busy playing with friends today and tomorrow, to pass the time more pleasantly.  Grace came down with a fever last Monday and has been very sick since.  I took her to the doctor yesterday and he says it is a bad virus, maybe the flu or mono.  Time will tell.  So of course our plans were canceled.  I am praying she can feel up to the celebrations we have planned towards the end of the week.

Did you notice the stockings hung with care in the photo above?  Last week I found stocking hangers at Good Will.  I could not believe my good fortune.  I needed three and there they were.  I've always wanted to hang our stockings over a fireplace.   I may not have a fireplace next year, so this is a treat.  And I did not spend a lot for the pleasure!

It snowed a little here last night.  It's a good packing snow, so the boys have been out playing in it.  Grace watched them from the inside make a snowman for her.  They also joined in a good old-fashioned snowball fight with some neighbors.  Good fun.

My husband has been given Thursday through next Monday off.  We are looking forward to that.  Tomorrow we are expecting to receive our new toy, aRoku.  Do you know what that is?  I've only just learned that they exist.  I did not know that I needed one until very recently.  (lol)  They are a device so that people can watch movies via the internet on their TV.  Since we don't have cable or a laptop, this will expand our choices a lot.  We already love Netflix.  This is sure to be even nicer.  Having more choices without paying extra is a great thing.  We don't watch network TV anymore.

One more thing, to answer those of you who have asked, I do love my new vacuum, although, it doesn't vacuum by itself, the only fault I can tell that it has.  Maybe I need one of those robot ones.

That's what is going on here this week.  I wish you and yours a very merry and healthy Christmas.

Dec. 22, 2009 - Miscellany

I think I dropped off the planet.

We have been quite occupied with house-hunting.  It is amazing how looking at two houses can take up a whole day, but the driving alone totals out to about 2 hrs time.  We've looked at more than 2 houses, but we tend to look at 2 at a time as that is do-able with the children.  We are seriously thinking of making an offer on a property with 5 acres and a small house with plans to expand the house or at least enclose the garage.  We are making changes in our current house to prep it for sale.  We have removed the mantle and tile from the fireplace. We are going to re-paint that wall and put up new tile to bring it up to code.  It was surrounded by wood before.

I've also been very slowly and painstakingly transferring the contents of this blog into a Blurb book.  It takes forever, but I have three years on here.  I have to go in and change our names to our real names in the book as I want it to be a keepsake for our family.  I have put so much of myself into this blog over the years and want my kids to have a peek into who I am after I am gone.

We've been quite occupied with scouts, school, piano and swimming lessons, and Christmas activities.  The big boys are doing wonderful with their swimming now.  I regret having not given them more opportunity for that in the past.

Oh, and we've had four b'days in the past month and have one more to plan for next week.  I was able to get out of the princess cake for Joy by convincing her that cupcakes are way better.  Kade had his cowboy birthday, complete with dirt cake, and my husband and mother also had their birthdays here.
Joe will be ten next week!  We do a real party at ten, so that is in the works.

Other than that we've just had a lot of sickies with the various viral bugs that go around this time of year.
Poor Faith has already had 3 colds and she is not even four months old yet.  Thankfully I am nursing and she handles them like a trooper.  Praise the Lord for the blessing of mama milk!

Dec. 21, 2009 - My Expectation

I wanted to share something with you, in hopes that it might encourage you in whatever situations you may be facing right now.

Many of you know that due to the economic crisis, I have now started working at a local hospital in the admissions department.  My job often puts me in the Emergency Room, which I absolutely love.  This year, I will be working on Christmas Eve, as well as Christmas Day.  Of all things, I will be working the afternoon shift on Christmas Day, which is not my usual shift.

Now, I have to be honest.  It would be really easy to have a pity party because for the first time ever, I will not be with my family on Christmas.  However, I am choosing to be thankful that I have a job.  They are very hard to find, especially in the city where I live.  At one point, our city was the number three in the nation for fastest-dying cities.  Thus, all the more reason to be thankful to have a job, and one that pays above the minimum wage.

As I was getting ready for church this morning, I was pondering the odd change to my schedule for this week.  I began to recall the many times that the Lord has shown me that He has placed me at my job.
  • There were the times I just "happened" to get a deaf patient, and was able to "speak" to her in her own language.
  • Another time I "happened" to get a rather grouchy patient, but discovered that she was extremely scared about the procedure being done on her.  I was able to show her kindness and love in spite of her rudeness to me.
  • There have been numerous occasions when I've had a patient who was likely in the middle of a miscarriage.  Since I've had a miscarriage, I was able to give them words of hope, even if they did end up having a miscarriage.
As I pondered these scenarios, it dawned on me:  I believe the Lord has worked it out so that I am the one who is working in ER on Christmas Day.  I believe I will encounter someone who needs to see Jesus in me on that very night.  And guess what?  It stirred up an excitement within me.  Am I still bothered that I will have to leave my family on Christmas Day?  Yes, I am, but I know God has a plan.  As He unfolds that plan, it will bless me and my family.

Our pastor shared something today which only added to the excitement in my spirit of working on Christmas.  He was talking about why Mary gave birth in a dirty, smelly stable.  When she told Joseph it was time, Joseph may have said, "Now?  Here? You've got to be kidding!"  Surely delivering the Messiah in a dirty place like that couldn't be God's will!  Yet, it was.

So I ask you, what is your "Now? Here? You've got to be kidding!"  Watch and see how God's will can unfold in that unlikely place.

Merry Christmas!
~~ Stacy ~~
