The Old Sschoolhouse Magazine, Summer '07 - Homeschooling and American Heritage Girls

Posted in The Old Schoolhouse Magazine

I'm so glad for this article! I have been looking over AHG for a few months now. My daughter is a social butterfly (takes after her Mama) and loves having the interaction with other children. We are unlike most home schooling families in that we don't get out much. Yes, she plays with the neighbor children, but it's not everyday. We also attend our church where she interacts with the other children, but that's sometimey too. I know my daughter longs for more. She loves being with her family, but I also know that she would love to do something on a more regular basis with others outside her family.

I love the idea of like-minded children of various ages getting together and working for common goals. When my daughter was younger I could tell she would be a follower and thanked God that He had already steered us to home schooling. I wouldn't have to worry about what crowd she's trying to gain acceptance into. After about two years of home schooling she is proving herself to be quite the leader. I've seen her take the high road and do the right thing when she doesn't see anyone watching. This encourages me that there's a godly character growing in her heart. I'd like to reward her with the thing she greatly desires. There's a troop near us based in a Christian school. This article just confirms in my heart that bringing her there would be a blessing and contribution to her godly character development.

Homeschooling Today May/June '07 - Determining the Amount of Sweeterner in Chewing Gum

Posted in Homeschooling Today Magazine

This is another reason why I LOVE THIS MAGAZINE!!!! This little experiment was made just for the readers of HST! It caught my eye since my children would love to perform this experiment (as would most children). I especially love it since it just adds to the list of experiments we are thinking of doing. I received a crystal making kit recently (thanks MIL!). My oldest wanted to "play" with it.   I told her we'd have to do the experiment and follow the directions. One direction was to collect rocks as the base for the crystals. My middle child LOVES to collect rocks anyway so we thought that would be perfect for him. We're still getting things ready for it, but now we have another experiment to do so I might just save these to do in the same week or something. This is turning out to be a wonderful summer for my soon to be K'ers!!! Thanks HST!

Homeschooling Today May/June '07 - The Scrambled Early History

Posted in Homeschooling Today Magazine

I am so glad Ruth Beechick wrote this article! At first I didn't know if I would like the new magazine since it's under new management. After reading this article, I've decided: I've always LOVED this periodical and I always will LOVE this periodical!!

Since I've just been re-educating myself according to biblical beliefs I realize that a lot of what I've been taught is wrong. This article helped me see exactly what I need to re-learn. I've been trying to figure out how early history plays out since the world is only about 6,000 years old. This article states that anything in the history books before 4,000 BC is before creation so it's wrong! That leaves quite a big gap I'd guess. I wonder where all that stuff fits in then. She also states that anything before 2350BC was before the flood and probably should be thrown out too. Wow! This is totally revolutionizing my teaching! I know one thing, I'll be reading Dr. Beechick's books on history before I choose any history curriculum!

I'm back!

Posted in Blog Maintenance

YES! I'm finally back in here! I have read so many articles that I wish I could have gotten on here to write about. I had password problems for a while and just decided to fix the problem once and for all!!! I'm wondering if I should go back and write about all the other articles I missed in the last year. I guess if I do I'll just mention it's a commentary of an old article in the title...

So, on with the show!

This is why I love this magazine!

Posted in Homeschooling Today Magazine

I just received my Spring issue of Homeschooling Today. I love this magazine becuase it's the only one I've found that actually ministers to my spriit. Maybe it's the writers (R.C. Sproul, Jr. Stacy McDonald). Maybe it's the topics. Whatever it is, this magazine brings the Word of God as it pertains to home schooling, not just hone schooling news and encouragement. I LOVE THAT!!! They come with the pure unadulterated Word of God and then apply it to home schooling, which in turn encourages me! It's the WOrd that encourages me, not just their words of encouragement. It's such a breath of fresh air. It waters my spirit and I'm so thankful they're in the magazine business.

This is shameful

Posted in Blog Reviews

I haven't updated in here since Dec??!?!? Okay, it's partly not my fault since I had problems getting into this account. The site admins finally helped me so I'm back. This is terrible...

First off, some unfinished business. I never finished my countdown of free gifts from TOS. I really need to go back over and review what I've gotten, although I do think there's one I just plain didn't get yet. I'll be talking to Gena about that...

Next, I'm going to be updating on here regularly so big sigh of relief... I read my latest TOS and am chomping at the bit to get down all my reviews of the articles. So, here I go...

I was a winner!!!!!

Don't forget the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church is November 20, 2005!

IF YOU MISSED THE FIRST ONE, THERE'S ONE MORE DAY COMING UP!

On Nov. 3 I was picked as a winner of the Featured Blogger of the Week contest. I didn't post about it right away because I was waiting for the gift to come. Well it came so here goes my write-up.

This is a banner for the gift I received. It's a curriuclum that teaches children as young as kindergarten how to write paragraphs and essays. It only teaches the format. At first, I was like, 'do y'all know I have preschoolers?' I didn't think they'd be ready for that stuff until years from now. Then I talked with the developers of the curriuclum and was assured that I'd be able to use it with my preschool children. When I looked at the curriculum I only saw two parts that I can use with my chidlren. Now that I've read about it I'm also trying to figure out where to fit this into our home school. I know there are many great products out there, but this doesn't seem to fit what we're doing right now.....unless I just use it as an aid in learning math concepts. Sorting and grouping (which are the basci building blocks of this curriuclum) and math concepts. I caould probably introduce it as that. Only problem is the curriuclum want syou to continue teaching it in regards to paragraphs for the rest of the year. I've eben talking about how the Holy Spirit led me away from a curriculum. Do I just pick this one up? Questoins, questions, questions. I know the One with the answers!! Check out Our Home Schooling Journey to find out what answer we received.

In the meantime, I'd like to thank Spunky, Gena and Julie for recognizing me in their contest. I greatly appreciate it!!!

I've Got A Job To Do by Dandi Daley Mackall

Don't forget the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church is November 13 (&20), 2005!

My Favorite Verses: I've Got a Job to Do (The Great Commission) - By: Dandi Daley Mackall
THIS IS IT!!!! I've finally found it. I found it a while ago (when I got blessed in a Christian bookstore), but just couldn't find the time to post about it. This book is the one I've been waiting for! If you've read any of my other posts concerning Christian black books for my young children you konw that I was having a hard time finding any. Well, this book comes in and fills the gap!!

The story is told through poetry of which the last line of each stanza is the title of the book. The story starts out with a little girl explaining what the Great Commission is. The story goes on to follow the little black girl (with so cute hair!!!) throughout her life and shows how she carries out the Great Commission. I love the story because it shows how she owns Jesus's command. She believes with all her heart that this is what Jesus wants her to do so she does it with all her might! She's always looking for opportunities. The story also shows how she handles rejection from those who do not want to listen to what she has to say. It's all done on a level that my children can understand. I love how to author keeps the title in the minds of the readers by placing it all throughout the book. At the end, the author includes the scripture Matthew 28:18-20 (I have it memorized now from reading it so often) which is what the whole book is based upon.

I highly recommend this book to everyone with little children!!!! It is a great catalyst for getting your young ones to think about witnessing and actually doing it! You can find it at any Christian bookstore. It might be a new arrival. There are also other titles as this book is one in a series. I'll be looking for the others as well!!!
