A Cat in the Bird Cage

"Katie!" twelve-year-old David said to his sister, who was nine, "Be careful, please! We don't want Rainbow to get out of her cage!" Rainbow was the children's pet parrot. It was feeding time, and today it was Katie's turn to feed her. But David was sure that Katie would somehow let Rainbow out!

"I can do it, David, watch!" and Katie proudly replaced the food and water in Rainbow's cage. But while she had her back turned, the parrot flew out of the cage and around the kitchen!

"Now look what you've done," exclaimed David. "How in the world do you catch a flying parrot?"

"I…uh…Da…vid, you could've done the same thing," Katie said with tears in her eyes."

At this David felt bad. Katie was right; he could've let the bird out, too. In fact, yesterday it had almost happened, but Mother had quickly shut the door of the cage before the bird got out. "I'm sorry, Katie," he said humbly, "I shouldn't have gotten mad at you."

"It's okay. But how are we going to catch Rainbow?"

"I don’t know. Maybe we should ask Mom and Dad!" They walked off in a hurry to find their mother.

The children also had a pet cat. One of Katie's fears was that their cat, Cinnamon, would eat the bird! But the cat had different plans. Sneaking up to the birdcage she peeked in. I wonder what it's like in there, she though as a plan formed in her mind. I'll just get in for a minute and then if I don't like it I'll get right back out!

The children had left the door open on the birdcage so that maybe Rainbow would fly back in. Here was Cinnamon's chance! She put one paw into the cage. She put another paw into the cage. However she didn't quite fit like that! She tried again a different way. It worked, although it was still a little tight. Cinnamon grunted and pushed herself harder to get into the cage. The thought never occurred to her about how she was to get out quickly!

Finally, she was in! But as she pulled her tail into the cage it caught on the door of the cage and shut it. Cinnamon, however, didn't know that the door had been shut, and decided that it really was comfortable in the cage, although it was more than a little small for her.

Meanwhile, the children had been trying to catch the runaway bird. Rainbow was getting exhausted from running away from the children and stopped to rest for a moment. At that moment Mother grabbed her before the bird had a chance to get away. Rainbow was safe again. Now to get her back into the cage. They all walked over to the birdcage. What they saw made them all laugh but at the same time wonder how to get Cinnamon out. Mother handed Rainbow to David, and opened the birdcage door, much to the relief of the cat, who had just realized what had happened.

But getting the cat out was a little harder than they had thought. First Mother tried pulling Cinnamon's front paws out of the door. Cinnamon meowed very loudly. Finally the children were able to coax the cat out the door using a very frightened bird!

Hello,

That was cute! I only had time to read one of the stories, but I think that this is a really good idea. I'll have to read some more of them later.

Great Job!
