Weekly Wrap-up/Homeschool Weekly for week ending March 14, 2009

 From the Heart:

I've been very pleased with the speakers here at YWAM Cimarron lately.  This past week we had a man from Pakistan, who is a fourth generation Christian (very rare).  He spoke on the Biblical basis for missions.  I think the students really enjoyed his teachings.  I enjoyed getting to know him.  This next week will be an Australian man who lived in India for 17 years (if my memory serves me right).  He has become very dear to all of the staff here.  We are looking forward to his being here and what that will add to our fellowship.

On the Homefront:

Not much new around here.  Fortunately everyone was healthy this week.  The sun comes and goes.  The snow melts off, and then we get some new...overall I think more is going than what is coming!  More snow expected tomorrow.

In the School Room:

We only had four days of school due to dh not being able to teach on Tuesday while I was at the clinic.

Our read aloud is still about William Carey, first English missionary.  It is part of the YWAM Then and Now missionary stories.  I think we are almost done with it.  We keep forgetting to do it at night and we are a couple of chapters behind.

We finished George Washington's World.  We learned about Noah Webster, Napoleon Bonaparte, the Rosetta Stone, the end of George Washington's presidency and life, and the beginning of John Adams' presidency.  We also did a short reading on Abigail Adams. The girls did three state pages, and a president sheet on John Adams.

We started studying roots in science, and started an experiement about tap roots.

Bible:  Ciara memorized James 4:1-4, and they each did some daily reading and journaling on their own.

In language arts, Jaedyn is working from Primary Language Lessons and got through several lessons.  Ciara is did more from Intermediate Language Lessons and wrote out a narrations on her history lesson.  Ciara also edited a poem she wrote earlier in the year about winter and put it on her blog:  www.homeschoolblogger.com/mountainprincess .

Math:  Miquon is working well for Jaedyn.  She finished her blue book.  Next week she will start the green book.  Ciara is still doing fractions, and seems to understand it well.

Reading:  Jaedyn  finished Little House by Boston Bay of The Charlotte Years series of the Little House books.  Ciara is reading a Dear America book called The Girl Who Chased Away Sorrow:The Diary of Sarah Nita, a Navajo Girl, New Mexico, 1864.

Preschool:  Elly is pretty self-motivated and did a lot of workbook stuff.  I read to her one morning.  Hopefully we can get back on track next week.

On the Mission Field:

I mentioned about the speakers above.  Last night our Pakistani speaker made a special Pakistani meal for us and tonight the students will make a love feast for the staff.  I feel a little out of touch with the students as my small group meeting was cancelled so the students could prepare for tonight's dinner.

In the Clinic:

My studies seem to be motivated better for my boards recert coming up.  For this I am thankful!  My time in the clinic was blessed and I didn't have any car trouble getting home (a triple blessing).  I even got to drive home in the daylight due to the time change - yea!

In the Literary Scene:

Besides my studies, I am working on more of the Charlotte Years books myself.  It is easy, but good reading for this simple mother.

Feeding on His Faithfulness,

Carol

Sounds like a good week. What are you using for your American History....the famous people you mentioned studying?
The speakers sound really interesting, too!
Wow. More snow. I can't imagine. I had spring fever really bad this winter. Hope you get your spring soon.

Such a cute picture!!

Enjoy all that snow :) I'm sort of missing it right now, but with all of us recovering, it is nice to have the drier ground.

Responding to your comment: Vocabulary we are using English from the Roots Up (per MFW), and also supplementing with Vocabulary Cartoons. On the CM ?'s....pretty much we follow what MFW has scheduled and I sometimes try to make it a little more CMasony! For instance this week, I had the girls sketch and label the skeleton -- whereas, it was only scheduled to cut and paste one. The movie was added, but I try to add stuff books/movies from the Book Basket list and just make it a fun time together. Mozart coloring sheet, I added. I just can't have them sitting idle while listening to the music...so I bought Composer coloring books and have them color about the composer while they listen. The Habit Training is something that I have added into our weeks. I am reading through Laying Down the Rails and it has really helped me in that area. Other than choosing our own Math, Language Arts and Foreign Language, all of our work is scheduled and planned for me by MFW. I LOVE this method for me and I do glean the book lists from Sonlight and Winter Promise, but I really love the Biblical weaving of all subjects and the layout of the Teacher's Guide with MFW.

Hope this answers your questions. Have a really relaxing weekend,
~Mrs.Cuddles

Hi, Carol! I'm happily "parked" on your blog, reading and taking it all in! Thank you for your heart to share.
I was struck immediately by the opening verse in your introduction area, and I wondered if you'd ever heard of a singer/songwriter named Marty Goetz? He put this passage to music, and it's so beautiful. There's a you-tube video of it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lF2_fHXOS8
I thought you might enjoy it.
I'm not a real big fan of the "Crystal Cathedral," where the video was filmed, but they did a nice job accompanying Marty for this.
God Bless you and your family!

Mar. 14, 2009 - Hello!

Posted by WordLady

I've just had a nice introduction to you via your blog and wanted to say hi. I appreciate your interest in Hebrew Roots; we've been part of a Sunday School class that studies that for seven years now. Love it! In fact part of our study is the Torah portion with some in-depth teaching. What a faith-builder to really see God's big picture through HR studies.

Also, we're in Colorado, too, the central front range! Nice to meet a fellow Coloradoan.

Canadagirl suggested you might be interested in a gluten-free version of her GrapeNuts cereal recipe; I'll keep you posted. My hubby can tolerate barley and rye flour so I might try it with that. However, I'll probably try the GF version, too. We're also sugar-free right now so Stevia will be our sweetener.

I'd like to add you as a friend if that's okay. God bless!

Oh everything sounds soooooo intresting there. August would be a GREAT time to come. You then can see our garden. [0=

I actually am very thankful for the time change. It does feel like we have more of a day and I LOVE it ! I know what you mean by sun and snow but the melting is more than the snow coming down.

Sending you a HUGE (((HUG))) my SSiC
In Him<><

The time change has been nice. I can't believe how late it stays light till. I remember it getting dark at four not too long ago. That picture of your daughter is funny. Kids can fall asleep the funniest ways. I'm glad you've enjoyed the missionaries who have visited lately. That would be neat to get to hear such testimonies on a regular basis. I'm not getting much schoolwork done at all right now as I broke my wrist last week. I think we'll be doing a lot of school in the summer this year. :(

We LOVE YWAM missionary books. We are currently reading a Marilyn Laszlo, a former missionary to Papua New Guinea. (that one is not a YWAM though.)
My oldest loved the Little house bokks too. If we were closer our girls would be big pals.
Be blessed,
Chasity

One thing have I desired of the Lord that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. To behold the beauty, the beauty of the Lord. To inquire in His temple, the temple of the Lord. This is my everyday thoughts about being a mother to three little ladies (12, 10 and 5) and a three year old son. We serve God full-time, and I am a physician assistant. I have the most awesome husband in the world. I am trying to seek and serve God with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind and all my strength.
