"Raise up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs, but I don't know which). This has been a week of intense child-training. Consistency was my goal. It is hard work, but I believe my children are making headway and my home is becoming a much more pleasant place for everyone. Little Critter, 2, has gotten to be a handful with throwing toys at people, not obeying, not staying in his seat and so forth. Bubbies, 5, seems to cry anytime I say no to her, no matter how crazy the request. Snow Crystal, 10, has no tolerance for Bubbies and tends to hurt her feelings a lot. Mountain Princess, 11, is just needing help getting through this transitional place in her life changing from girl to woman.
On the Homefront:
This has been another week that has focused on getting another vehicle. The Lord has provided nicely with a '97 Suburban in really great shape. We will get to pick it up tomorrow. We found another two years newer for less, but it had been driven really hard and wasn't in nearly as nice condition. Pray that we will be able to sell the tires and rims we bought for the Town and Country last year and be able to upgrade the new tires on the Suburban to all weather tires before the snow flies.
In the School Room:
Bible: We read about Moses. The older girls worked on memorizing Psalm 103, and Bubbies memorized Proverbs 6:11. We also studied about Ten Days of Awe and Day of Atonement. They worked on the 5th letter of the Hebrew aleph-bet, Hey.
History: We read about Abraham Lincoln with the older girls. We are reading a book together called A Photobiography of Abraham Lincoln. I didn't think I'd like it because it looked like it would be dry, but it is written very well. Bubbies is learning about the Vikings.
Science: The big girls finished Diary of an Early American Boy. They began studying a book about Electricity and Magnetism. They also did another electricity experiment. Bubbies continues to learn about water, mountains, rivers and so forth, followed-up with internet sites to expand this.
Read-Aloud: We finished Apple and the Arrow. I decided not to do the activities with it.
Reader: Mountain Princess and Snow Crystal (dd10) are finished reading Freedom Train, the story of Harriet Tubman. This was another amazing book. We followed it up with a cartoon-like video about Harriet Tubman we found in the library.
Language Arts: The older girls did one dictation, prewriting and writing a list of rules of rights for something, and two grammar exercises. Snow Crystal did some handwriting practice. Snow Crystal worked from her Explode the Code book 7. They both worked on learning their Greek and Latin root word. Bubbies (dd5) worked on the letter R and reviewed letters b, f, m, and t. She also did some copywork. We made another R page, and read "Runaway Bunny" and "I Read". I think soon she will get to start putting letters together and reading 3 letter words! She will learn her first vowel soon.
Math: MP is still working on percentages, and did another book review. SC is working on units of weight and distance. Both must practice their multiplication tables each day. Bubbies is working on seeing her teens as ten and a number under ten (one ten and 5 units for example).
Spanish: MP is using Rosetta Stone and seems to be learning and retaining a lot. SC is using The Complete Book of Spanish (workbook from Wal Mart). She'll get back to Rosetta next year.
On the Mission Field:
The Fall DTS 2009 is off to a great start. They've finished two weeks, and we can tell already that this particular group is putting their heart into this school and they will get a lot out of it. Praise God!
Continue to pray for the other young lady here on the base, and I spend much time in prayer for her as well. She is in a huge spiritual battle over her soul. Please pray that she sees the necessity of allowing God to work in her and in giving up control to Him. She has a lot of baggage, and until she sees that her own way has only made a mess of her life, she won't be able to move on and find the healing she needs. Pray that God can heal her mind and help her think right thoughts and to be able to recognize truth on her own.
Pray for another young lady who was in a former DTS who has made some wrong choices and is needing to face the consequences of them. Pray she will make right choices and not try to hide her sin.
In the Literary Scene:
I finished the third book of the Corrie Belle Hollister series. I enjoyed it, but now I need to find the fourth book! I am also reading Raising Godly Tomatoes by L. Elizabeth Krueger. This book has been very inspiring and helpful in child training in a godly way. I highly recommend it to all parents.
Feeding on His Faithfulness,
Carol
If you would like to join me in this theme, just write up your own weekly summary, using mine or your own categories. Then sign the Mr. Linky below. I'd love to read your weekly summaries too! I hope to post mine on each Friday or Saturday. At the latest it will be on Sunday. If you get yours done before I do, just leave your link in my cbox or comments from the week before. Be sure and check last week's Mr. Linky for any new ones who posted before I did! It is a great way to meet new people.
Hi Carol,
It sounds like a pretty good week around there for you - that's great to here. I have that Abe Lincoln book, I'll have to remember to dig it out when we get there in American History. Glad you found a new vehicle too!!!
So, just wondering, when you bake, do you have to use the "high altitude" directions on the back of boxes? What do you have to do? Cook things at a higher temp.
Very busy week for you. Brings back memories of when mine where all in that age range.
Its good to take stock of what is working and not working in the consistancy of our discipline. Slack creeps up slowly and we do not even realize it untill things begin to run a muck. It usually occures over the summer in our house and getting back into the grove of school brings it all out. Thankful for Gods wisdom! You are a wise mom!
Our son owns a 96 surburban. Its a tank! He has had to put about 1500 into it in the past three years and that includes new tires. He really loves it. We are looking for one to replace our current van. It is on its last leg so to speak. Transmission problems.
DTS sounds very fruitful this go around. Your job is so interesting to me. I would enjoy the ministry side of it very much.
I have my weekly wrap up typed (in email), but since I'm at work, I can't post it to my blog yet. I'll try to pull up your page on our dial up later so I can link to it.
I hear you on the two year old behavior. Abigail is showing her two year old stripes even though she isn't two yet. I wrote about it. Then, I realize...that I'm not doing what I know to do...which is lock the gate on the kitchen, put her in her crib for a short time when she is being difficult, be consistent about what she can and cannot touch (choosing my battles), and of course spending some time giving her one on one attention. Sorry, for so much pent up (or non pent up) emotion in your house. I know that's not fun. I keep struggling with my hardness to my oldest. It's not that my expectations are wrong, but just my tone. Why do I do what I don't want to do?
You sould like you have a fun mix with school. Blessings.
I've been through all of those child training issues, although, just with my younger two. It's not fun just with two. And, yes, your oldest is at an age that can be emotional. Hopefully, it will level out again for a couple of years. It did with my 2nd and 3rd girls.
Yay!!! for the new Suburban. How exciting. My oldest, who just turned 23 last week!!!!!, is car shopping right now. Hers is about to rattle apart on the road, and she is beginning a part time job that she will have to drive up the mountain 2 or 3 days a week.
I hope you all are doing great. I did not intentionally drop off the blog planet! So many things going on, so much on my heart, but most of it I can't share publicly right now. Oh, and by the way! Briana just flew over your state yesterday morning on her way to Utah for the weekend. It was crystal clear, and she had a window seat. She told me that it was "the most gorgeous, breath taking thing she thinks she's ever seen." : ) We've never been able to travel out west, so that was her first glimpse at your beautiful mountains. I will make it someday. Her going really has me itching to travel there!
We are going through much of the same issues (minus the 2 yr old...but it wasn't long ago that i was 'there'...so I can sympathize.) I hope things settle down for you , and that you have a wonderful week ahead.
One thing have I desired of the Lord that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. To behold the beauty, the beauty of the Lord. To inquire in His temple, the temple of the Lord.
This is my everyday thoughts about being a mother to three little ladies (12, 10 and 5) and a three year old son. We serve God full-time, and I am a physician assistant. I have the most awesome husband in the world. I am trying to seek and serve God with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind and all my strength.
