Show and Tell - Love Feast Fall 2009

Last Friday this motley crew, who happens to be our current Discipleship Training School, put on a love feast and foot washing for us.  The theme they chose was "Favorite Biblical Characters".  I came as Mary, the one who loved to sit at Jesus' feet.  Dh came as Lazarus, my brother.  Mountain Princess came as Queen Esther.  Snow Crystal came as the angel with the fiery sword, Bubbies came as Mary, Jesus's mother, and Little Critter came as King Josiah.  Here are pics of us in order of how I just listed it:

We ate at fancily decorated tables on the floor a very special meal created by the students.  They entertained us with singing, and washed our feet before the end of the evening.  It was a very nice evening.

Here are a few random pics of people enjoying themselves at the love feast.

I hope you all enjoyed my little presentation of our fun night last Friday night.  If  you would like to see more show and tell entries this week or enter one of your own, jump on over to Mary's blog Raising Godly Men and join the fun!

Weekly Wrapup

From the Heart:

This has been another full, fun, emotional week.

Many of you may know that I am a Physician Assistant by trade.  Until last June I was working part-time for a physician in another town.  He needed me to work more hours and I couldn't do it, so he laid me off.  Anyway...on Wednesday morning the Lord prompted me to pray with a dream I had about him.  In my dream the doctor was telling me that he was having marital problems and health problems.  I began to pray for him, his family, and his clinic.  I knew he was having a lot of serious issues at the clinic and was under attack.  To make a long story short, that night I found out that his clinic and his two urgent care clinics were raided by the feds and DEA and some charts were commandeered (if that word can be used outside of a military sense).  No arrests were made, and two of the clinics were reopened on Friday.  There is a former employee who is making a lot of trouble for him.  She's nuts.  This man is very consciencious, loves God, prays with his patients, deeply cares for people.  He's been watched for fraud for the past 9-10 years by Medicare, so he does everything in his power to keep his nose clean.  (Something that happened to him when he first got out of residency).  This whole thing is just evil.  The enemy is after him.  Please pray for him, his staff, his family, his colleagues.

There is another family who has been visiting this past month, and volunteering.  We have really enjoyed having them around.  They are leaving today.

I am taking a Sunday School class about finding what you are made to do, and pursuing it.  One thing this has stirred up within me is my desire to "go into all the world".  I really have a passion for overseas missions.  Unfortunately, my husband doesn't share that with me.  Now I am seeking God as to what He has in mind.  I feel strongly that He guided me and approved of my marriage...  Sometines I wonder and hope to be able to teach in discipleship training schools around the world.  I hope that I can teach on the Bible and what I am learning now.  I don't see how this will ever be possible, because there is such a wrong view of God's principles in the first five books of the Bible, and I know that without the Holy Spirit's timing and preparation, this would quickly be labeled "legalism".  It is so sad, yet I have hope!

On the Homefront:

Tim's brother Eric, came for a short visit on Thursday night.  He has been in the state hunting Elk, and he brought us some.  Very sweet.  The girls loved having him here and showed him their recent stories, pictures and so forth.

In the School Room:

Bible:  We read more about Moses and being in the wilderness, Mt. Sinai, and the Tabernacle.  The older girls both completely memorized Psalm 103.  They will each get to pick out a movie as a reward. They each memories Lamentations 3:22-23.  This has a pretty song to it.  Bubbies memorized a little verse as well.  As for studying the Biblical Holidays, we studied about Sabbath and about why it is important to study the holidays.  This lead to some good discussions about other holidays that we see as "Christian" and their histories.

History:  We continue to read about Abraham Lincoln with the older girls.  We are reading a book together called A Photobiography of Abraham Lincoln.   Bubbies is learning about medieval times.

Science:  The big girls are learning about electricity and magnetism.  They also did another electricity experiment.  Bubbies continues to learn about water, icebergs, plants and air.

Read-Aloud:  We continued Across Five Aprils with the big girlsI am doing My Father's Dragon with Bubbies, complete with a free lapbook from www.homeschoolshare.com.

Reader:  Mountain Princess and Snow Crystal are finished reading The Perilous Road.  It is a good book.  I think it would be especially good for boys.  It is based in the civil war era.

Language Arts:  The older girls did some journal writing this week, and some grammar exercises.  Bubbies did some review work with her first six letters.

Math:  I came across a great math program for helping the girls learn their math facts a little faster.  They are enjoying it a lot.  You can get it for free for two weeks, so we are trying to get as much use out of it that we can while we can!  It is www.mathscore.com

Spanish:  MP is using Rosetta Stone and seems to be learning and retaining a lot.  SC is using The Complete Book of Spanish (workbook from Wal Mart).  She'll get back to Rosetta next year.

On the Mission Field:

The speaker this week in our discipleship training program was Cindy Anderson.  As she has been put on a gluten-free diet, they assigned her to our table most of the week, which allowed us to get to know her.  I really enjoyed a couple of her lectures that I got to sit in on on Sunday and Monday evenings.

On Friday the students put on a "Love Feast" and "Foot Washing" for the staff.  They had us come dressed up as our favorite Bible characters.  My husband came as Lazarus, Snow Crystal came as the angel that guarded the entrance to the garden of Eden with a fiery sword, Mountain Princess was Queen Esther, Bubbies was Mary the mother of Jesus, I was Mary, Lazarus and Martha's sister, and Little Critter was King Josiah.  They decorated the dining hall with sheets, plants and hand made instruments.  The tables were beautifully set.  I think I will do a Friday Show and Tell to share the pics!  Here is a sneak peak:

In the Literary Scene:

I started reading The AD Chronicles with book one "First Light" by Brock and Bodie Thoene.  I am still reading Raising Godly Tomatoes by L. Elizabeth Krueger.

Feeding on His Faithfulness,

Carol

Weekly Wrapup

From the Heart:

I've been on the run for the past two weeks.  It all started shortly after my last entry.

We bought a Suburban.  That week I had to run around getting the tags and taxes and insurance taken care of and pack to go to Kansas to my nephew's wedding.

While we were there we also went to my husband's college, Bethel College in North Newton,  for a festival called "Fall Fest".

It was a great weekend, but extremely busy.  This week we hit the books again, but started running out of juice by the end of the week.  We celebrated Sukkot, or Feast of Tabernacles, although only one day of it was really enjoyed in our Sukkah.  I didn't even get pics.  We had friends over and ate a special meal in our decorated tent in the back yard.  It was nice, but busy.

Friday Mountain Princess had her 12th birthday.

On the Homefront:

In the School Room:

Bible:  We read about Moses and the exodus.  The older girls are close to having memorized Psalm 103, and Bubbies memorized Isaiah 43:11.  We also studied about Sukkot.  They worked on the 6th letter of the Hebrew aleph-bet, Vav.

History:  We continue to read about Abraham Lincoln with the older girls.  We are reading a book together called A Photobiography of Abraham Lincoln.   Bubbies is learning about several of the early Christian heroes, like St. Patrick.

Science:  The big girls are learning about electricity and magnetism.  They also did another electricity experiment.  Bubbies continues to learn about water, mountains, rivers and so forth, followed-up with internet sites to expand this.

Read-Aloud:  We started Across Five Aprils with the big girlsI am doing My Father's Dragon with Bubbies.

Reader:  Mountain Princess and Snow Crystal are reading The Perilous Road.  It is exciting.

Language Arts:  Pretty much the same for the older girls.  Bubbies started reading her first words (at, mat, fat, bat)!

Math:  There was a lot of review for the older girls this week, which is always good.  Bubbies did a few excercises in her two books.  The Singapore book had her putting together two groups of objects and finding the total.

Spanish:  MP is using Rosetta Stone and seems to be learning and retaining a lot.  SC is using The Complete Book of Spanish (workbook from Wal Mart).  She'll get back to Rosetta next year.

On the Mission Field:

The Fall DTS 2009 is going well.  They learned about spiritual warfare this week, and the heart of God, I believe, last week.

Thanks for your prayers for my young lady friend.  She chose to leave on Friday, which is sad, but I continue to pray for her to make right choices and find herself in another good place with people who will help her grow in her faith.

In the Literary Scene:

I finished the fourth and last book of the Corrie Belle Hollister series.  I am also reading Raising Godly Tomatoes by L. Elizabeth Krueger.  I just started a new book series about the years around Jesus's time by Brock and Bodie Thoene called First Light.  I love their books.

Feeding on His Faithfulness,

Carol

Weekly Wrapup

From the Heart:

"Raise up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs, but I don't know which).  This has been a week of intense child-training.  Consistency was my goal.  It is hard work, but I believe my children are making headway and my home is becoming a much more pleasant place for everyone.  Little Critter, 2, has gotten to be a handful with throwing toys at people, not obeying, not staying in his seat and so forth.  Bubbies, 5, seems to cry anytime I say no to her, no matter how crazy the request.  Snow Crystal, 10, has no tolerance for Bubbies and tends to hurt her feelings a lot.  Mountain Princess, 11, is just needing help getting through this transitional place in her life changing from girl to woman.

On the Homefront:

This has been another week that has focused on getting another vehicle.  The Lord has provided nicely with a '97 Suburban in really great shape.  We will get to pick it up tomorrow.  We found another two years newer for less, but it had been driven really hard and wasn't in nearly as nice condition.  Pray that we will be able to sell the tires and rims we bought for the Town and Country last year and be able to upgrade the new tires on the Suburban to all weather tires before the snow flies.

In the School Room:

Bible:  We read about Moses.  The older girls worked on memorizing Psalm 103, and Bubbies memorized Proverbs 6:11.  We also studied about Ten Days of Awe and Day of Atonement.  They worked on the 5th letter of the Hebrew aleph-bet, Hey.

History:  We read about Abraham Lincoln with the older girls.  We are reading a book together called A Photobiography of Abraham Lincoln.  I didn't think I'd like it because it looked like it would be dry, but it is written very well.  Bubbies is learning about the Vikings.

Science:  The big girls finished Diary of an Early American Boy. They began studying a book about Electricity and Magnetism.  They also did another electricity experiment.  Bubbies continues to learn about water, mountains, rivers and so forth, followed-up with internet sites to expand this.

Read-Aloud:  We finished Apple and the Arrow.  I decided not to do the activities with it.

Reader:  Mountain Princess and Snow Crystal (dd10) are finished reading Freedom Train, the story of Harriet Tubman. This was another amazing book.  We followed it up with a cartoon-like video about Harriet Tubman we found in the library.

Language Arts:  The older girls did one dictation, prewriting and writing a list of rules of rights for something, and two grammar exercises.  Snow Crystal did some handwriting practice.  Snow Crystal worked from her Explode the Code book 7.  They both worked on learning their Greek and Latin root word.  Bubbies (dd5) worked on the letter R and reviewed letters b, f, m, and t.  She also did some copywork.  We made another R page, and read "Runaway Bunny" and "I  Read".  I think soon she will get to start putting letters together and reading 3 letter words!  She will learn her first vowel soon.

Math:  MP is still working on percentages, and did another book review.  SC is working on units of weight and distance.  Both must practice their multiplication tables each day.  Bubbies is working on seeing her teens as ten and a number under ten (one ten and 5 units for example).

Spanish:  MP is using Rosetta Stone and seems to be learning and retaining a lot.  SC is using The Complete Book of Spanish (workbook from Wal Mart).  She'll get back to Rosetta next year.

On the Mission Field:

The Fall DTS 2009 is off to a great start.  They've finished two weeks, and we can tell already that this particular group is putting their heart into this school and they will get a lot out of it.  Praise God!

Continue to pray for the other young lady here on the base, and I spend much time in prayer for her as well.  She is in a huge spiritual battle over her soul.  Please pray that she sees the necessity of allowing God to work in her and in giving up control to Him.  She has a lot of baggage, and until she sees that her own way has only made a mess of her life, she won't be able to move on and find the healing she needs.  Pray that God can heal her mind and help her think right thoughts and to be able to recognize truth on her own.

Pray for another young lady who was in a former DTS who has made some wrong choices and is needing to face the consequences of them.  Pray she will make right choices and not try to hide her sin.

In the Literary Scene:

I finished the third book of the Corrie Belle Hollister series.  I enjoyed it, but now I need to find the fourth book!  I am also reading Raising Godly Tomatoes by L. Elizabeth Krueger.  This book has been very inspiring and helpful in child training in a godly way.  I highly recommend it to all parents.

Feeding on His Faithfulness,

Carol

Weekly Wrapup/Rosh HaShanah

From the Heart:

This week has been a joy.  For the first time, we prepared for and celebrated Rosh Hashana, aka Feast of Trumpets.  Unfortunately we don't have a shofar or a congregation that celebrates the Biblical holidays commanded in Deuteronomy, but we enjoyed reading about the holiday in Robin Sampson's A Family Guide to the Biblical Holidays over the past month or two, doing some fun worksheet kind of activities, and by creating a special meal that we partook together last night, including carrot "coins" to wish each other prosperity in the new year (this is the beginning of the civil new year on the Jewish calendar), apple slices dipped in honey to wish each other a "sweet" new year, an autumn stew, gluten-free apple-honey cake, and gluten-free challah bread.  The latter two dishes were baked in a round bundt pan to depict a crown - the coronation of Messiah (Yeshua/Jesus).  We said a couple of blessings when we ate the apples dipped in honey.  I am very pleased with the challah bread, so I am encouraged to make it more often for our weekly Sabbath celebrations, when I am able.  I hope to use this lapbook in the future to help us understand this holiday better:  http://www.biblicallapbooks.com/rosh-hashanah-interactive-lap-folder.html.  I would also like to get these things to help celebrate our holidays and Sabbath days:

I can find it here.

Or perhaps plain brass candlesticks would do, but don't you think these are festive?  Here is the link.  I can also get a bunch of candles that fit them at the same site.

On the Homefront:

This week nothing much happened as far as homesteading and improving our home, other than preparing for our holiday and enjoying our home.  I did have to light my first fire in the wood stove one day due to rain.  We had some beautiful sunny days, but most were intermixed with rainclouds and rain and cooler temps.  The foliage on the ground is changing colors, as well as some of the leaves on the tops of the aspens.  We also got snow in the higher elevations.

In the School Room:

Bible:  We read about Joseph and his brothers, their move to Egypt, Joseph forgiving his brothers.  The older girls worked on memorizing Psalm 103, and dd5 memorized Matthew 7:12.  We also studied about Feast of Trumpets.

History:  We read about the California gold strike, California and Kansas becoming states, the beginning of the war between the states (aka the Civil War), and Abraham Lincoln becoming president.  Bubbies is learning about the Romans.

Science:  The big girls are continuing to do their Diary of an Early American Boy and their Electricity experiments.  I finally started looking at the internet links. DD5 loves this, and she asks for it everyday. She learns so much more using the links. We watched videos of earthquakes, tsunamis, and a good program about volcanoes. The volcano one let us create different conditions for volcanoes and watch what kind of volcano we created go off. Very cool for both of us! We haven't done the hands on experiment last week or this week because dd5 "didn't want to". She loves watching the Discover and Do DVD though!

Read-Aloud:  Apple and the Arrow.  This is dd5's read-aloud, but since the other girls are ahead with their reader-aloud, we just decided to do this one.  I have some unit study activities to do with it, but we haven't gotten very far with them.

Reader:  Mountain Princess (dd11) and Snow Crystal (dd10) are reading Freedom Train, the story of Harriet Tubman.  I am reading it with dd10, and so I get to enjoy it with her.

Language Arts:  The older girls did one dictation, prewriting and writing a narrative poem, and two grammar exercises.  Snow Crystal did some handwriting practice.  They both did some copywork with Apple and the Arrow.  Bubbies (dd5) worked on the letter T and reviewed letters b, f, m, and k.  She also did some copywork.

Math:  MP is working on percentages, and did a book review.  SC is working on units of weight and distance.  Both must practice their multiplication tables each day.  Bubbies is working on seeing her teens as ten and a number under ten (one ten and 5 units for example).  She is also practicing writing her numbers, which isn't as easy for her, and finding two in all the numbers up to 100.

On the Mission Field:

It has been exciting to see what the Lord is doing here on the base.  Our new Discipleship Training School has begun as of Sunday.  We have seven students - two ladies and 5 men.  We spent two evenings sharing our testimonies and praying for one another - exciting!

I have spent time with another young lady here on the base, and I spend much time in prayer for her as well.  She is in a huge spiritual battle over her soul.  Please pray that she sees the necessity of allowing God to work in her and in giving up control to Him.  She has a lot of baggage, and until she sees that her own way has only made a mess of her life, she won't be able to move on and find the healing she needs.

In the Literary Scene:

I'm reading the third book of the Corrie Belle Hollister series.  I am enjoying it, but finding I can't stay awake as long as I'd like to read more !  I am also reading Raising Godly Tomatoes by L. Elizabeth Krueger.  I've read a lot of it on her website, but found I really needed to get the book to let the principles sink in.  I'm enjoying it a lot, and hoping that soon I will have a good hold on parenting in a godly way and a more peaceful household.

Feeding on His Faithfulness,

Carol

Weekly Wrapup

From the Heart:

This week I've had a very nice peace that passes understanding, and a faith that follows the peace.  I have just seen God provide for us so faithfully, that my peace and faith in His faithfulness has just come naturally.

On the Homefront:

On Monday, we processed a truckload of sweet corn that we were able to glean from a farm of Olathe Sweet Corn on Friday.  It is good stuff!  Lots of corn in the freezer now.

Today we sold the camper for $600.  It is a funny story.  Tim dropped the price from $850 to $600 yesterday on Craig's list.  We wanted at least $500.  The phone started ringing off the wall yesterday.  One of the first calls was a lady who wanted it, but she had to sell some rock concert tickets before she could afford it.  She was from a couple of hours away.  She said she'd call back when she sold them.  I figured I wouldn't hear from her again.  Last night a man came by who was very interested but never made a decision without waiting 24 hours...  He said he'd call today.  Several others called yesterday and today with real interest.  Then this morning, the rock concert tickets lady called back.  She was in Montrose (an hour away) and wanted directions.  She came up and bought it.  That has just tickled me!

In the School Room:

DH's parents have been here since Tuesday afternoon, so we haven't officially done school this week.

The girls did some nature study and journaling yesterday afternoon while I went shopping.

Dora-girl worked on and finished her lapbook for If You Give a Moose a Muffin with the help of her grandparents.

These pics are of Dora-girl's If You Give a Moose a Muffin Lapbook.

On the Mission Field:

Our discipleship training program begins on Sunday.  I continue to be involved and pray much for the three young ladies that I mentioned last week.  My children of course are my main mission.

In the Literary Scene:

Besides reading my Torah Portions, I finished the Ralph Moody book, Shaking the Nickel Bush.  I also read the second and started the third book in the Corrie Belle Hollister Journals series.  I am enjoying them more than the first book.

Feeding on His Faithfulness,

Carol

Weekly Wrapup

From the Heart:

God is good, all the time.  Sometimes we forget that.  Sometimes the cares of this life make us think God doesn't care or want to be involved.  The truth is, if that is the case, it is because we are not involving Him.  He desires to be our best friend and heavenly Father.  All we need to do is make room for Him in our lives.  He has shown us how He is faithful to help us with our finances this week in many different ways.  I'm always amazed.  There are three young ladies whose lives the Lord has allowed us to be a part of in discipleship that I have reconnected with this week.  I am so glad to be able to continue to build our friendships and mentoring relationships.

On the Homefront:

Tim did a lot of making and canning of peach jam and canned peaches both at the base and in our own home.  Today he also tried his hand at peach pit preserves today - a kind of jelly.  Tastes mostly like the lemon juice and sugar that are added to it.

In the School Room:

We actually got a full week of school done this week.

Our family read-aloud was Moccasin Trail.  We finished it on Friday.  It is a great story.

In history we studied about the reasons for the civil war from both points of view, and some of the things that happened in history that contributed to it.  I found the reading of Landmark of American History Vol. 1 a bit laborious for the girls.  We had to read a chapter a day three days in a row, and it was a bit long and tedious for them.  I enjoyed it, but it was too much for them.  We finished studying about William Wilberforce at the beginning of the week.

In science we continued on with studying about Noah Blake and how he did things in his days.

For Bible we worked on memorizing Psalm 103, (Col. 3:20 for Dora-girl), read about Isaac, Jacob and Joseph, and studied about the Festival of Trumpets.  For us this is so new, it is all introductory reading and learning.

In language arts, the girls both did their assignments with Sonlight LA 4, which included a dictation, studying about outlines, writing an outline, and using the outline to write a paper.  Snow Crystal wrote about her vacation to San Diego a couple of years ago, and Mountain Princess wrote about horses.

Math: This was also a bit laborious this week.  The girls hate to do the practice pages and review pages, but it is so necessary, since there isn't a lot of review in Singapore math.  I am pleased with the girls' work, but they often need to be reminded how to do the problems.  They don't seem to retain it from day to day .  Doragirl learned about numbers over 10 in her Singapore Math, and is reviewing her lower numbers in Shiller Math.  She also learned about the material bank yesterday in Shiller Math.

Reading:  Both girls read Sing Down the Moon.  It is a neat little book about a Navajo girl and the trials she had with the Spaniards and white soldiers.  Dora-girl is learning the letter M, and we are doing a lapbook with the book If You Give a Moose a Muffin.

Here Dora-girl is working on her M activities for her M sheets.

On the Mission Field:

There are three young ladies whose lives the Lord has allowed us to be a part of in discipleship that I have reconnected with this week.  I am so glad to be able to continue to build our friendships and mentoring relationships.  Please pray for them as they are out in the world and the enemy has evil plans for them.  Pray that God would protect them, and that they would continue to make good choices.

In the Literary Scene:

Besides reading my Torah Portions, I got some reading in the next Ralph Moody book, Shaking the Nickel Bush.  I found this one a little harder to read since he kept making some bad choices and had to live with the consequences of them.  I was also disappointed to not get updated as to what happened after his last book (ie why he wasn't still with his grandfather in Maine).

Feeding on His Faithfulness,

Carol

One thing have I desired of the Lord that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. To behold the beauty, the beauty of the Lord. To inquire in His temple, the temple of the Lord. This is my everyday thoughts about being a mother to three little ladies (12, 10 and 5) and a three year old son. We serve God full-time, and I am a physician assistant. I have the most awesome husband in the world. I am trying to seek and serve God with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind and all my strength.
