Hi Tiany..or should I say good evening?! ;0)
Thank you so much for hosting this Open House! I took a peek at your schedule and love how you have things split up into blocks of time. When I attempt to make a schedule I write down 8:00am, 8:30am, 9:00am, etc. and it's almost impossible to stay on it. I'm going to try the larger blocks of time so thank you for the great idea!

We've been homeschooling for three official years but it's been more like 5. I have 1 blessing. She is almost 8 and acts like she's 28. She loves social studies. We usually school in the office/classroom. Sometimes we go to the kitchen or outside. She likes those days.

We did join a homeschool group. We both love that because she gets to have some friends and I do to. We can just have fun and visit with friends. We both need that all important socializing that we get asked about all the time.

I love the idea of your open house. Thanks for having it.

Homeschooling has been a way of life in our home for 10 years now and my aim this year is to be more relaxed about the whole thing and really enjoy our learning and not get too caught up in workbooks and checklists.
My husband and 17 year old son leave the house around 7:30 am and then I can finally have the bathroom! My husband is a teacher at one of the high schools in our city and my son goes to school there. It’s really good that the Lord gave me five sons with only one shower in our house. I usually try to wake up around 6:45am to have some time with the Lord before beginning my day and the three youngest boys wake up between 7 am and 8 am. I have two early risers and one sleepyhead but I don’t fret too much about wake up time because I feel that is one of the reasons we homeschool.
Our oldest son joined the army right out of high school and is now serving in Iraq. He has only three more months and will be done with his 15 month deployment! We can’t wait until he is back state side.
We usually have breakfast around 8 am and then school starts on or before 9 am. We aim to begin with devotions but sometimes the boys get started on their workbooks before I get in the school room. Our school room is my pride and joy, a vision I had one night as I pondered how too make our living space a little larger. We built an addition on our house that has windows all the way around which let’s in the sunlight that I love and allows us to observe nature from our table. This room doubles as “mom’s place” for scrap booking, lesson planning or simply hanging out with a book.

We are following a new curriculum this year, Winter Promise, after three years of Sonlight. I am really looking forward to starting on August 27th with the program called “Children Around the World”. We will also use their science program called “Shoot and Sprout, Buzz and Bite” that sounds like a lot of fun for a group of boys. The Winter Promise website is www.winterpromise.com if you would like to learn more about their programs.
I will be homeschooling our three boys (10, 8 and 6) this year and plan on using both of these programs with all three of them. This will keep us on the same page and allow us to work together which also saves mom a lot of time!
The older two will be using WP language arts which is also new for us this year. The youngest is still working on phonics and we will continue our use of Veritas Museum Phonics.
For math we will continue with Abeka because that has worked well for our family for 10 years and that is one think I don’t have to rethink every year. To quote Susan Wise Bauer, author of “The Well Trained Mind”: “When your child finishes using Abeka for math, he will KNOW math”.
Another new thing this year is our Latin program “Latin for Children”. I have been pondering this for some time and finally decided to do something about it.
I am hoping to gather some friends for art lessons using “Discovering Great Artists” and use the facilities of the local library. This will be a very low key parent run program.
I have been involved in a co-op for several years and directed it the last year but we will not be doing it this year. Co-ops are fun but they are also a lot of work and I welcome the chance to be home more, especially with all the new things we will be doing.
We will probably alternate our schedule depending on the day. Workbooks in the morning, Children Around the World and science in the afternoon and vice versa.
I aim to finish our day by 2 pm so there is a break between school and evening sports. Sports are BIG in this house of boys so there is always somewhere to be. My 8 yr. old will be playing football this year and that requires a large time commitment. I am not thrilled about football but he has waited for this since he was two. Then there is soccer and baseball. We have a color coded calendar to make sure we don’t forget something!
I am continually thankful for the opportunity to homeschool our children, especially because when the oldest were young I had to work fulltime. I love all the time we have together and how much I am learning along with them!

I happened across your blog today and I love what you are doing here. I posted something fairly similar on my blog just today and now I wish that i had come across your first.

Blessings on this project and I hope that many are blessed!

I was just out blog-hopping and came across your open house, so I decided to participate, too. This will be fun to read everyone's posts. Great idea!

Wow! What a turnout!!
You really know how to host a party!
I will get your cute little banner on my blog...

You know, I had planned to take part in this even before you left me a comment. Great idea about the meme, though. I saw your banner on nancysnook and had come over here to check it out last week!
This is great!

Aug. 2, 2007 - Me Again!!!

I decided to post my Homeschool Open House on my HSB blog, but I did not link it in Mr. Linky so that I didn't enter twice.

Just letting you know and others know just in case they would like to go to my HSB blog instead! I am signed up as Heather @ Running to the Cross, but I am also heatherslittlehearts (which is not on the Mr. Linky list).

Have a great day, Tiany!
And again, thanks for giving us the opportunity to share!
Blessings!

I did it !!! I kept it simple and with a invitation for others come back and see how things go through out the school year. Other wise I wouldn't get my entry in. Plus , I REALLY wanted to be in the first 100. (0;

Thank you Tiany once again for making this soooo much fun !!!

I wanted to be among the first 100 participants and I just barely missed it. Hopefully I'll be able to check out some other home schools in my "spare time" (chuckle).

Sorry, Tiany. I didn't read very carefully! I homeschooled my children in the past, but now they attend a classical Christian school. I continue to supplement their education in the area of literature, however!

What a great idea ! I have written a bit about our 17 years of homeschooling on my blog. We started way back in the 1980's when homeschooling was new to most people. How things have changed. Thanks for setting this up !
