To Bring Up Children

About Time...

Right...

It is about time.

This entry is about time.

And.

It is about time I get back to journaling and logging our homeschooling journey.

And.

It is about time I get back to quite a few things.

Time.  Whoa.  Big subject.  Literally.  A measurement of space is what I've seen it as for many years.  It is how we break up our days, nights, weeks, months, years and on an on into infinity.  It is how we mark meaningful occasions and not so meaningful ones.

Time eludes us, frustrates us, goes by too slowly, goes by too quickly, causes us to rush, and lures us into thinking we have quite a bit of it...some of us believe we don't have nearly enough.  God tells us we have exactly what we are supposed to have when we are walking with him.

Time has quite a few common phrases associated with it:

"Time on your hands..."

"Time flies"

"As time goes by..."

"Time is running out."

"Time heals all wounds."

Time has books written about it and how to use it more wisely, efficiently, to make time work for you instead of against you.

Time also shows up in all of us physically.  I watch my children go from bald headed, bright eyed, needy babies, to tow-headed independant toddlers, to thickly thatched crowns of glory, bright eyed, smart and helpful youngsters.

I see myself advancing into middle age with the effects of poor choices in my youth (like sun bathing with baby oil, or sun bathing with no protection at all), poor eating habits, excessiveness.  I also see how Christ has spared me some of the consequences of those choices and I am so very grateful.

I see time advancing in my husband as well, only I love what I see in him as a result of time.  God is helping me to appreciate and like the changes time is bringing in me also.

Let's not forget what time brings emotionally and spiritually.  These are where I rejoice greatly and without much prompting from the Lord.  My children, my husband and myself have all grown so much more close to Jesus, we see and understand more of His world than ever before.  I look forward to how much more we will see and understand in the passing of more time.  God has used His hand and time to heal me emotionally and bring me more fully into what I was intended for all along.

Educationally I see my children advancing right along with time.  It is as time passes that I am allowed to see how they are growing and how I am right beside them, learning new things and being refreshed in old ones right alongside of my children...what a blessing.

It is about time that I relinquish my burdens about time and simply enjoy what I have in the here and now;  that I treasure my moments with my children for now these moments are many and abundant and very soon they will be few; that I take the time to journal our days so that I can look back on these moments of abundance and see God's Holy Spirit move in our lives; that I keep my attention of the things He has given me and get it off of the things that just do not matter.

So, my dear, beloved Jesus...I give you my time.  It is not longer mine, but yours.  My hours are yours, my days are yours.  Please gently remind me when I try, out of habit, to take those measurements of space back from your wise and loving hands into my inexperienced and clumsy ones.  I choose you and your plans for my family over myself and my agenda.  I give you this because...

...it is about time.

Way Behind!

So very far behind in documenting the activities of educating the children!

It seems nearly impossible that it has been over a month since I did log daily information and at the same time I am VERY relieved to know it was not longer...

I will not attempt to recreate our days here but will say the following:

Since our third week, which seemed to overwhelm me with the projects, schooling has changed a bit.  The projects were not getting done, I could not seem to find any time to do them, they continued to stay on my list, continued to stress me and then, distract me.

In addition, I noticed Minnie was really needing some spelling attention and reminders.  Reading several different books was not enough in guiding her even with some words she should have no difficulty in spelling.  Spelling is not her strong suit but it is not her weakest area either...so I added spelling words, out of a book that had some long lists of commonly misspelled words...this seems to be helping.

As a result of my disappointment in not getting "EVERY" project done that was suggested, we have scaled waaayyy back!

Our focus is reading most of the suggested reading of our current curriculum, math (of which last year we did not get much done and so we are quickly getting through what we missed!), home economics such as sewing, knitting and other related items.

We are also involved in a co-op that meets on Fridays from 9:30 to 12:30.  They do presentations and P.E. every week...and 4-H activities inbetween those two activities.

For 4-H our projects are ecology, consumerism, and sewing.

Here is our week:

Monday, October 30, 2006

Monkey (M):  He has been feverish and not feeling well all weekend and so he did not attend school today.  He complained of his stomach despite nothing ever coming up and now he seems to have a rattle, I cannot tell if it is in his throat or chest, however.

MrMaggo (MM): My guy was very excited about school this morning as it is Spirit Week and each day this week the school has a different theme.  Today was "crazy hair day".  I could not find the spray in hair color and so I purchased a colored "pixie" wig for him...it is several shades of blues and cut in all different lenths like a shag!  He thought it was very cool, "just really itchy mom!"

After picking him up from school, we learned that he did, in fact, wear the wig all day long!  He was so darn cute!

MM is definitely having trouble with writing letters backwards, which is somewhat normal for his age...but in addition he sees them backwards, frequently and in all areas...he has to really think and really focus to get the numbers or letters read/written correctly.  He happens to be left-handed so this may be part of it.

Minniemee (MME): We had etiquette and knitting today. MME made it clear that she had no intention of knitting and was a bit pouty throughout our Monday morning visit with Pril.  I am considering making the month of November and December baking mornings in place of etiquette and sewing/knitting in order to get our baking done with certainty and have fun too!

Upon arrival home I gave MME her spelling test, she received a C...she only missed six of 25 but I think I need to find a new means of teaching spelling.

She read one chapter in Louis Pasteur.

We then worked on home economics...The Cleaning of a Younger Brothers Room, chapter 126!  (hers was done by me last night...yes, I am cleaning their rooms because they have gotten beyond acceptable and my sister and her neighbor/our friend will be staying in those rooms in a week and a half!!!

Tuesday, October 31, 2006

Well, already, I didn't keep up with this week.  We did get through chapter 7 of Little House in the Big Woods.  We are moving quickly through math.  I've decided that we will take through the first week of December to finish the current math book (Math-U-See Beta) and then take the next three weeks of December to prepare her by watching the DVD of the next book (Math-U-See Gamma) and actually start the work after New Years.

Magoo got his first progress report for the end of the first quarter.  He has done well but even though the teacher isn't concerned about some of his backwards printing, I am concerned about the backwards thinking involved behind the writing.  We'll see how this next quarter pans out with that.  He is not voluntarily raising his hand for answering questions, which surprised me a bit...but only confirmed what I have been seeing in other areas.  Overall it was a good report and I am so very proud of my boy.

Monkey is also getting rave reviews at his school.  He decided to be helpful with a little girl this last week (one who has difficulty walking) and held her hand, got her what she needed, helped her up, helped her to keep moving to the next area in class...his teacher was very impressed with his efforts.

He got to go on a fire engine two days in a row at his school this last week and he LOVED it!  The second day they gave out red plastic fireman hats and it is his prized possession.

Wednesday night Gordon wasn't feeling well and by Thursday morning was truly too ill to go to work (which happens maybe once a year for him).  Friday morning, he was no better, in fact worse.  Second day of no work.  Friday wasn't such a hot day for me physically either.  I kept trying to attribute it to lack of sleep Thursday night...but that was not to be the case.  Saturday morning brought the deep pain in joints, back ache, body ache, head ache and my throat felt as it I was trying to swallow my swo**en gla**s.

I still left the house to go to a prayer meeting I felt God had called me to.  By the time I got home I was not feeling well at all, and Gordon was back in bed despite having felt better in the morning.  The children let me know he had gone to the doctor.

What a smart husband have I!!!  He went on Saturday afternoon, got right in and discovered he had a bad case of Strep Throat.  So, that meant, that's what I had.  I began taking his antibiotics and this morning (Monday, Nov 6.)  decided I 'd better keep children out of school (Minnie was not feeling well) and get them into the doctor.

By 4:00 pm we had confirmation that all three tested positive for strep throat and she even gave me a prescription for me to replace what I had used of Gordon's.  By the time we got home, all three were actually beginning to complain of not feeling well.

Got the ickly pink medicine in all three of my babes and got them all down to bed!

One more day of all three home for tuesday....(heavy sigh)  The boys are a bit difficult together all day, every day!

A Week of Meals...

Can it really be?  Can it really and truly be the 18th of  September already? My, my, my!  I am not certain that I am ready for Fall but it is well on its' way and deep down inside...I do so love it.

The smells, the chill in the air despite warmer temperatures, the food, the color, the clothes...just love Fall.

I am sure you noticed the title, "A Week of Meals..."  Yes, I am putting my meal plan to publication.  Keeping Fall in mind.  It won't be as "Fall like" as I want due to budget but it will certainly maintain a slightly heavier and warmer substance than Summer menus did.

My home boasts a cookbook cupboard.  It wasn't built for that.  The cupboard was built in 1923 as a Dining Room Hutch in our 1923 home.  I am certain it was built and attached to the wall as a home for china.  Over the past 7 years that we have lived here it has housed a number of different items.  It now houses Christian books and cookbooks.  About 1/2 and 1/2 of each topic.

I LOVE cookbooks.  Particularly old/vintage/antique ones.  I also use them.  But, of late, I have not perused their pages as often because I am trying to feed my family healthy fare and my husband and I somewhat reduced calorie and fat fare.

So, what I most likely will be using from here on out is:  Everyday Food by Martha Stewart, current and past issues for the month of September.  AND, Cooking Light, current and past issues for the month of September.  I will indicate which recipe comes from where.  If no indication is made it is simply my own concoction.

This keeps it simple for me and I don't overbuy or get overwhelmed by "other recipes I really want to try".  Someday I'll do all those others recipes.  For now, I am trying to keep it simple.

If you like the sound of something and want to try it let me know in comments and I'll post the recipe!

Here goes:

Week Two

Monday, September 11, 2006

Monkey (M):Did not want to do much this morning but finally got into the swing of things.  Has a very difficult time adjusting to Daddy going back to work on Mondays.

Did some more color work and line work.

MrMagoo (MM): Rose fairly happy and got ready quickly again.  He enjoys school enough to not put up such a fuss.

The day went well for him.  Gram and Gramps picked him up from school as we were out with my MIL for Minnie and Monkey for a wedding she is in and we'll be at on Saturday!

Upon picking him up though the meltdowns began.  These continued on into the evening until story time.

Minniemee (MME): Our day began smoothly.  This is a catch up day for us.

Monday mornings we will have etiquette lessons in practice and coffee/tea with my neighbor and best friend.  We will also have sewing lessons for hand sewing until it is mastered.

All morning we prepared for this until 10:15.

10:15-11:30 Etiquette.  Visiting.  Sewing postponed until next week.

11:30-12:00 clean up from morning.

12:00 Off for errands.

Tuesday, September 12, 2006

Monkey (M): Helpful and sweet today.

MrMagoo (MM): Got up and was sleepy but ready to go.  Got ready quickly and obediently.

His day seemed to be good and he had a lot of papers to share.  We went directly from p/u from school to swim lessons and then directly to a fitting for his tux for Sat. wedding and then directly home and ready for bed!

Busy day but he did very well!

Minniemee (MME):

8:45-9:15 Bible reading. Psalm 91. Copywork vs 8-9.

9:15-9:30 Prayer

9:30-10:00 Study Black Bears of Wisconsin.  Used internet and 1950's Ency. and a little fact book we have.  Filled out a worksheet on bears characteristics, diet, lifespan, enemies, habitat etc.  Drew picture of a black bear and a paw print.

10:00-10:15 Discussed biblical principles of good manners and how it helps to prevent esteeming yourself higher than others.  Read Philippians 2:3-5 and Proverebs 18:13.

10:15-10:45 Drew a beautiful and impressive illustration of a English Brindle Bulldog.

10:45-11:00 Snack

11:00-11:15 free time

11:15-12:00 Lunch

12:00-2:00 M nap

12:00-12:30 MME read ch 4 Great Horn Spoon

12:30-12:45 free time

12:45-1:30 MME read ch 1 and 2 in Louis Pasteur biography.

1:30-2:30 chores and free time

Wednesday, September 13, 2006

Monkey (M): Woke happy.  Got ready easily.  Was happy when he kissed his Daddy good bye this am.

Been into a bit today but good natured.

MrMagoo (MM):  Had a good morning other than not wanting to get up.  He wanted to "sleep and sleep then go to school later"!

Although we had a few minor meltdowns this evening the ratio was definitely lowered as well as the frequency. He had one sheet of homework and he got it out and immediately accomplished it without one word from me.

Minnimee (MME):  Also wanted to sleep this am and did NOT want to start school...tried to bribe me by saying if she got a day off then so did I!!!!

Since I wanted to get this log done this morning I did let her have some of it off.  She has played with her brother, watched a bit of TV, listened to radio, read some doll catalogs and has read ch 2 of her etiquette book.

at 11:45 she is doing her copywork in Psalm 91 vs 10-11.

Read ch. 3 in LHBW.

Questions to ch. 3 answered.

Discussed being under the umbrella of authority of God and Parents.  Why being disobedient causes them, as children, to move out of that protective umbrella and leaves us unable to keep them from harm.  Will discuss and read more tomorrow on it.

Wrote out her 25 spelling words 3x each.

Shared with her Great-Grandparents all work to date from her portfolio.

Thursday, September 14, 2006

Monkey (M): Having a fairly good morning once again with him.  The reason seems to be that his big brother (of whom he loves...in fact just this morning they were sitting together on the sofa and M spontaneously said, "MM, I luhh yew", and MM responded with, "M, I love you too."  Not in the typical manner of responding but with a matter of fact tone of voice.  Inside I was bursting with love and could have shed a few tears over that...they typically are fighting and bickering and it has caused a great deal of upheaval. ) is not here during the day. This brings me a great deal of sadness on many many levels; Since my oldest son is not present with us during the day our days go better...?!  How can that be?  It's wrenching my heart.  Yet.  It is truth.

M did just have a meltdown over being disciplined for playing with scissors on my retro office chair which already has enough issues without M adding to it.  He also was disciplined yesterday for it and so today's was a bit more severe.  He did not cope with it.  Then, I told him he had to say "Sorry Mama" and he would not, so more discipline and then he really collapsed.

Herein lies a major struggle for parents of Sensory Kids...how and when do we discipline and how far do we take it?  This conumdrum applies to each and every time discipline is required...I must consider where is he sensory wise at that moment, have we had an overall good day, where am I and can I control myself and be firm but not overboard, has he struggled and had a lot of discipline already today, do we have a lot more to be accomplished  in the day and will this blow our entire day and was the offense one that I can let go without the other two realizing that he is getting away with something they would not?  All of this must take me only a millisecond or the moment is lost.

MrMaggo (MM):  Woke up happy and willing to get ready again.  We did struggle over him being so very very focused on his "show and tell" item that he would get lost easily.  He just could not follow directions this morning...so voices were a bit raised and tension went a bit high.  Then I asked him to put on his shoes and immediately realized they were shoes that he cannot get on by himself and knew I said the wrong thing...he went into "pre-meltdown" and almost lost it...I reminded him that all he had to do was simply say, "Mama, I need help with these shoes." and say it kindly, calmly and nicely...no need to yell and whine and cry.  He was struggling to overcome and went on to yelling at me for wanting to wear his clip on tie again today and then to yell over wanting his "show and tell"  I was going to lose it myself but know that then it's just a trainwreck so I did my best to maintain...

In a strained but lowkey voice I said, ""MM, you are NOT focusing on what Mommy is telling you, you are focusing on the tie and the "show and tell", stop and listen to me and ask me nice about your shoes...

He recovered well, we got the shoes on, the tie was left at home without fussing and he got his "show and tell" and off to school he went with a kiss, a hug and a prayer...whew!!!

Minniemee (MME): I know that my girl needs some one on one time away from home when she begins fighting me at every turn.  When she is reluctant to do what it is she knows she is supposed to do and with the right heart.

We are evidently at that point.  She did not want to get dressed on her own.  She did not want to do much very willingly this morning.  This is the norm for her when she is suffering for time but it is NOT the norm for her on a daily basis.

She found other things to occupy her time besides what she should have done this morning and gave a frown, a grump or an "But, I don't want to do that, it's too much" on every turn this morning.

We did not get Bible Reading and copywork accomplished until 10:30.

It is now 11:30 and the only additional items finished are studying spelling words and one vocabulary word...she has 4 more to do and must study two large topics today.

Owls (characteristics, diet, habitat, enemies, life span, behavior, and a drawing) and Guns (history, safety, mechanics, laws, policies and pros and cons of those items).

We still have to squeeze in swim lessons, a tuxedo fitting and a birthday party...hmmm, too much even for me as an adult...oooohhh, k.

Edit:  Thursday ended up with no swim lesson (Mama's executive decision that Daddy agreed with is that we do just one lesson a week on Tuesdays)  NO tuxedo fitting and we went to the birthday party of which the children had a blast at.

Friday we spent sewing to finish up Minnie's dress for her flowergirl position at the up and coming wedding Saturday.

Labor Day Holiday

No School

Tuesday, September 5, 2006

Monkey (M): Staying home with Mama until we hear of when his meeting at local Developmental Preschool is.

MrMagoo (MM): First day of Kindergarten at a local Christian school.  Read more about that by clicking here and here.  At the end of the day he was overtired but very excited.  He just could not wait to show us all his papers!  Meltdown occured within 20 minutes of arriving home and did not end until story time that night.

Minniemee (MME): First day of 3rd grade at "Walnut Grove Elementary".  This is what my husband has determined Minniemee should call our school this year since we are using the "Prairie Primer"  and it is based on the series of books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

We got a late start due to Mama's forgetting that we would be staying with MM through his first morning.  Mama also failed to allow time in the afternoon for M's OT visit...ugh...so this day ended up behind from the get go.

7:30-8:00 MME reads ch 1 of Little House in the Big Woods (LHBW)

9:30-10:15 Bible reading.  Psalm 91.  Copy work of Psalm 91.  vs 1-2 onto index card for preparation of memorization by end of week 6.

Discussion on Biography vs Autobiography

Discussion of food preservation

Discussion and picture viewing of trundle bed, leather, venison, lard.

2:30-3:00 MME read ch 1 of Great Horn Spoon

MME did great today with minimal upset.  She was overwhelmed by having to write out the entire Psalm 91 so we broke it up into several days.  This alleviated her and me and we returned to happy work.

Wednesday, September 6, 2006

Monkey (M): He has done surprisingly well with allowing me to give instruction to Minnie and not have to cater to his every whim or him getting so jealous that his is disruptive and destructive.  He has even sat at his table and done some line tracing and color crayon work...learning colors.

MrMagoo (MM): Did a great job of getting up again and getting dressed and doing all that he is asked to do in the morning without complaint.

As we approached his school in the morning he told me he did not want me to  walk him into his meeting tent...he could do it himself...part of me was so sad...I like being a part of his morning this way...another part was so proud of the little man he is becoming.

Upon picking up from school we had a meltdown in the car I had taken his folder out of his back pack and he wanted to do it.  Arriving home it got no better.  His fatigue levels are astounding and he just isn't able to process it at home.

Minnimee (MME):

This morning we also were late getting going because I decided to get to the library to get the last of the books we needed for the current week and next week.  They were closed for another hour.  So, we would have to come back after MM gets out of school. UGH!

7:30-8:00 MME reads ch. 2 of LHBW

9:45-10:15 Bible reading.  Psalm 91.  Copywork vs 3-4. and read Proverbs 18:10.  Discussed how the bible teaches us to be safe.  Also discussed how Laura's pa was so important to her by reading Malachi 4:6.

10:15-10:30 Prayer with the prayer journal

10:30-10:45 Snack

10:45-11:45 Discussed Questions about ch. 2

Sang "Yankee Doodle" several times (whoo)

11:45-12:30 Lunch

12:30-2:30 M nap

12:30-1:00 MME read ch. 2 Great Horn Spoon.

1:00-1:45 Discuss the joy of chores.  Brainstormed the joy of chores for MME.

1:45-2:30 Discussed metaphor vs similie.  Learned the word "literary"

Discussed that the ability to understand different bible concepts and academic concepts comes from growth and development and experience.

I've discovered that it takes us quite some time to accomplish certain tasks.  I'm not sure what I'll do...either remove some of the activities or spread them out further...

Thursday, September 7, 2006

Monkey (M): Today was another good day for him.  He and MM had a major bicker in the morning and neither one handled it very well.  They were both put into reset for about 15 minutes.

MrMagoo (MM): As said above the morning was going well until the bicker between M and MM.  MM was sent off with love and prayers.  He again had a major meltdown about wanting to show me his work while I'm driving us home.  I told him we would wait until we arrived at home so that I could see if the teacher wanted any papers back (his folder has a "keep" side and a "return" side...he has already mixed those up due to excitement!).  Could not get past wanting to show me now.

His papers are reflecting excellent attitude in school and that he clearly finds his current work too easy.  I know this will change in a few months.

Minniemee (MME):

7:30-8:00 MME read ch 3 Great Horn Spoon

9:00-9:30 Bible Reading. Psalm 91. Copywork vs 5-7.

9:30-9:45 Prayer.  Discussion of the importance of not rushing through...taking time to listen to God too...and then praying that back to the Lord.

9:45-10:45 Activities: Drew Laura's imagery of Jack Frost.

Finished up the history timeline of "Yankee Doodle"

Rush to Log It All In!

Earlier today I had a post almost complete.  Aaaalllllmmmost! Had only 20 words left at the most....(I was logging all of last weeks activities and tasks accomplished)

But guess what?

I let my 8 *ear old on the computer to play a few games for her free time...I didn't worry about the additional open UNSAVED window because she never messes with my "stuff".

Ever heard the cliched phrase "There's always a first time for everything."??  Ah!  You have!  Maybe you've even guessed it!

Yes.  Sadly.  Oh so woefully my darling little one has had her first trauma of messing with Mama's unsaved "stuff"!

She knowingly clicked on it...she knew it was MAMA's!  She ignored that fact admittingly.  She then purposely closed.    the.       window.....

NOOOOOOO!

30 minutes wasted.  Really.  In the scheme of things.  The bigger things.  NOT a big deal.  In the smaller things.  The-just-didn't-want-that-to-happen-at-that-moment-type-of-smaller-things-and-30- minutes-of-time-are-valuable-to-me-type-of-smaller-things????

BIG deal.

So.  I will start over.  Next post.

A Beginning...

About 9 months ago I began a journey into the whole blo*-o-sphere.  (yes a letter was left out...I have an unusual distaste in my mouth for certain words...one of which is blo*...I can only say it so many times before I no longer can...why? you ask...haven't a clue) What an experience it has been.  It was a concept I was completely unaware of until early 2005.  It occured to me that it might be the ideal journaling situation for me.  It occured to me to try it.

I let several months slip by without doing a thing about it until a dear friend of mine mentioned that I should try out this blo* thing and she thought it would be good for me and I would be good at it. (isn't she sweet?)

So, in early 2006 I began my adventure on Blogger.  It took awhile to learn the etiquette.  To learn the concept.  It did not take long at all to find that is can be a place of unbelievable support, encouragement and uplifting.  How I have come to love this "other-world".

It has taken me almost the 9 months to realize that I need to bring order to my posting life.  I had come across a few moms that had blo*s here at Homeschoolblogger and really liked them. Then, when I discovered one of my favorite reads had "My Other Blog" listed on her sidebar and it was housed here and it was about her adventures in homeschooling, I knew it would be my first step in clearing clutter from my "life post"!!! (so thank you dear Rainbow Cottage/Wildwood Homeschool, thank you!)

It is my intention to use this blog for all things school related.  Tell my stories, (boring and all), log our progress, (verrrrry boring) and find some  new families to support and read about and learn some new things for us to try!

The "hows and whys" of us starting homeschool can be found by clicking here...

The ongoing process of it will now be found in this place on Homeschoolblogger.

I have to keep reminding myself that there will be overlap and that is OK!!!  I am also trying to justify keeping up more than one blog.  But I will get over it and find the way...especially since I will be able to see how long it takes to do certain activites versus how long I allot for said activity.  I can see emotional changes in my children as the year progresses...(yada yada yada)

I also would like to include our weekly menu here complete with recipes as needed and find some new ones from any of you too!

So as hum-drum as it may sound this is the post that will keep me organized...comment if you like...read if you can (drudge through it that is)  I appreciate any and all!

If you read be sure to comment and I will come and see you too!

God's blessings to you!
