Delight Yourself In The Lord

• Aug. 9, 2007 - A Kind Of, Sort Of Tag

I was tagged a few weeks back and since then about 6 other times. The tag is actually about the eight random things about myself but I believe there is nothing else I can tell you about me. I have said it all, maybe I should have kept more the mysterious blogger. So here is my somewhat of a tag to feel I have accomplished it. I have found some facts about Australia you probably don't know.

I also have not copied the rules for the tag since I have broken them all and I don't want the tag police chasing me down and dragging me to tag court.

Here they are I hope you enjoy reading them.

*Australia day - January 26, Australia day, is the anniversary of ships arriving in Sydney carrying a load of Convicts.

*A census taken in 1828 found that half the population of NSW were Convicts, and that former Convicts made up nearly half of the free population.

* Police force - Australia's first police force was a band of 12 of the most well behaved Convicts.

*The Australian Lyre Bird is the world's best imitator; able to mimic the calls of 15 different species of birds in their locality and string the calls into a melody. Also been known to mimic the sound mobile phones.

*The Fierce Snake or Inland Taipan has the most toxic venom of any snake. Maximum yield recorded (for one bite) is 110mg. That would probably be enough to kill over 100 people or 250,000 mice.

*Australia is the smallest, flattest, and driest inhabited continent in the world. It is the only country which is also a whole continent.

*Emus and kangaroos cannot walk backwards, and are on the Australian coat of arms for that reason.

*When a specimen of the platypus was first sent to England, it was believed the Australians had played a joke by sewing the bill of a duck onto a rat.

*Box Jelly fish - The box jellyfish is considered the world's most venomous marine creature. The box jellyfish has killed more people in Australia than stonefish, sharks and crocodiles combined.

*The Sydney Funnelweb spider is considered the world's most deadly spider. It is the only spider that has killed people in less than 2 hours. Its fangs are powerful enough to bite through gloves and fingernails. The only animals without immunity to the funnelweb's venom are humans and monkeys.

Gold Rush - During the Gold rush of the 1850's, Australia received massive waves of migration from China, America, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England

*Newspaper readership - Per capita, Australians read more newspapers than any other nation.

*Gambling - Per Capita, Australians spend more money on gambling than any other nation.

*The average world population density is 117 people per square mile, that of the United States 76 and that of Macao is 69,000. Australia's is only 6.

*15 percent of Australia's GDP is derived from mining.

*.02 percent of the Australian land mass is used by mines. More land is occupied by pubs.

*Rabbits - For each person in Australia there are two sheep and over 16 rabbits, the latter introduced in 1859 by one enterprising man who brought 24 wild rabbits from England in an effort to remind him of home.

Now that is one interesting tag! Very creative. Very informative! So what you're saying is that Australia is filled with dangerous people and critters? (lol) Are you dangerous?

I have ancestors from there, I think. I have 2nd cousins there somewhere (yes we are a close family haha). I am certain we were convicts, some of my family still is!

As I read the "Most venomous" over and over, I am sure some of my family came from there. lol

I do love the coat of Arms part, very awesome!

You are so brave....I'm such a wimp when it comes to critters that can kill you. I heard somewhere that researching the family tree wasn't quite so popular an activity in Austrailia. My son is so proud that he can make a claim to a connection to a Detroit gang during the prohibition and also to Jesse James!

And that's saying something!! Oh- and you made me laugh, I think for the 1st time today (and here, today is almost over- it's 11 pm!) The "tag police"- where do you come up with the funny!? Oh, If I could swim, I would enjoy a visit with you! I say swim, because that is the only form of transportation that I can afford right now! Have a wonderful day- I'm off to bed!

Lol, Tracy, you should work for the Austrailian Tourist Commission! I don't like spider and snakes but I currently live with a house full of them. Just how common are all those dangerous creatures around homes and such?
Our deadlies (black widow, alligator & pit vipers) seem tame compared to yours! Please tell me they don't wander as close to you as ours come to us.

Take care!

Oh what a good idea to post about Australia! Lots of fascinating info to share with the children today.

I am a native Texan but I HATE creepy crawly things! I didn't mind so much when I was a kid but now I have kids of my own and I'm constantly worrying and saying "Stay away from the brush pile, son go kill that spider, please put something on the fire ant pile." And sometimes (screeching) "OH my goodness! There's a snake looking in our window! kill it! KIIIILL IIIIT!"

We have tarantulas, fire ants, wasps, brown recluses, all kinds of snakes and scorpions and other unpleasantness...but I think you have it worse there!

Cool facts about Australia. I could use the snake in the winter time to eat all of the field mice that try to wander into our house, but I fear snakes more than mice!

Blessings,
Lori

I think I could live with the 6 people per square mile thing. I've been feeling a little crowded lately.
Where are you by the way? Still having computer trouble or just taking a break?

Hebrews 4:12 & 13

• For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
