Delight Yourself In The Lord
• Nov. 12, 2009 - and Cancel Christmas.....
"Where are you Christmas, why can't I find you. Why did you go away?".... the words sung by a child in "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" (Jim Carrey version).
This song starts running through my head about this time of year. I could weep in my coffee and complain that we don't have enough money for this, that or the other thing. I could complain that my unemployed husband has ruined it for us because he hasn't landed a job all year, or I could just hang my head down and hide away from the crowds because they truly scare me. In my book all very valid reasons. But that's not why I canceled Christmas.
The last few weeks has truly been a testament in pain for this family, both physically and emotionally. We were willing to rip each other to shreds in front of the children, revert to very unchristian like behavior, all to get in the last word. And all due to lack of respect.
We had to come together and make some very tough decisions, pull this family together or sacrifice everything we worked for and walk away. Battered, bruised and damaged we took a vote (all nine of us) to decide whether or not we give in and split the families up or remember what brought us here in the first place. I have to admit we never really came to an all out answer. What we decided was to put the puzzle pieces back in place to find out how we all fit. The first step was to remove all outside influences. We have allowed so many people to come in and be disruptive towards our life, that we didn't see that the behavior of our children was actually working against the parenting model that we had laid out.
We have strict policies when it comes to child behavior in public as well as home. I'm not saying we don't have fun, we have truly laughed till milk spurted out our noses at dinner, but I am saying that there are behavior's that are not allowed in this household. Disrespect of adults being one of them, the second is disrespect of someone else's property.
My sister and I finally hit our braking point when while all the entertaining was going on, one of us was always cooking and the other was always cleaning or chasing down other people's children who were disrespecting property. All the while the teenagers (who begged to have the company over) were no where to be found when it was time to clean up or serve, my husband (mr non social) was usually off reading a book somewhere and ignoring everyone, and the attitudes and whining of the younger three reached ear shattering proportions because they were fighting over toys.
Boiling points reached peak level last Tuesday when two fights broke out in front of our kids (one was my husband and my sister, the other was my husband and myself). My husband didn't realize just how ridiculious he was being until he heard the 8 year old and the 5 year old the next afternoon repeating everything he was shouting at me VER BATEM! It was eye opening for him to say the least.
We had lost, respect wise, everything we had worked for the last five years to achieve. So we had come to a crossroads of sorts and had to decide. This is a mutual list between all of us:
1) No outside entertaining of friends or family through the end of the year. If we can't entertain each other through family interaction and enjoy each other, we sure can't allow others to bring their ideas of fun and entertainment in until we know that EVERYONE will be having a good time.
2) No electronics. We removed all of the TV's, radio's, ipod's, computers, DVD players, PS2's out of the kids rooms and my husband's office. It seems that respecting the educational requirements of this house has been ignored and needs to be re-established before these are reinstated.
3) Learning to love each other's company. We established family game night as Saturday after chores. Once all the daily chores are done and the church is cleaned, then we will, as a family, pick a game and sit and play. We did this last Saturday and had a blast.
4) School work and chores will be done in a timely fashion and there will be no exceptions. One person shouldn't be reponsible for cleaning up after, or cooking for nine people. There are five old enough to share in the duties.
The decision to cancel Christmas was for material purposes only. We celebrate the birth of our Lord and we will remember it that way, but there will be no purchasing of material possessions this year in any fashion. This family needs to redetermine why we are a family and we have to come together and love one another (as we are commanded by God). That in and of itself is the greatest gift of all. And it's one we can give each other without attaching a $$ to it.
All I ask for this year is prayers. Pray that this family can work it out and get back on track.
Thank you,
~jaimers~ |

• Nov. 11, 2009 - Wordless Wednesday

This old geranium belonged to my grandpa who is now in a nursing home. I could not bare to toss it out when we cleared out their place. I remember him being so proud of this spindly thing. He'd take me aside and show it to me when we'd visit. He'd remark how he only gave it rain water he collected. Somehow, I just need to keep this little plant going. It spent the summer outside. Now it is getting some sunshine from the inside.

• Wednesday, November 11, 2009 - School Review
Posted By Foxvalleyfamily
We've been working hard in school the past couple weeks, and we've made a few 'transitions' in MFW. I think things are looking up.
First of all, we have finally turned the corner from "B.C." to "A.D."
The kids made notebooking pages with short summaries of Jesus' time here on earth.

I was rather disappointed that we didn't cover it a bit more
...but I realize that this year in MFW is more about the establishing of 'the Church.'
We also finished Augustus Caesar's World! I have such a mixed review of this book.
I really liked that it gave a lot of the background about the 'setting' in history into which Christ was born. Why were the Jews looking for a Messiah, who was Herod, and why had he been made ruler of that region? (It also gave us a LOT of insight about the festival of Saturnalia ...and where a lot of our "Christmas' traditions come from. I gotta be honest.... I've always LOVED Christmas, but after reading that...I'm a bit uncomfortable with some of the aspects of it now!)
As informative as it was...I am also quite glad to be done with the book.
There was so much talk of paganism/false gods, and it just got to be heavy and depressing to me after awhile. Also - I must admit that while the book gave the historical reasons why a Messiah was needed - that author 'missed the point,' biblically, in many instances - and I ended up re-wording a lot of the materials so that my kids wouldn't hear false doctrine.
So now we have moved on.
This week we began Galen and the Gateway to Medicine.
The kids really enjoyed the first couple of chapters...and I'll admit I did, too.
We also began a new read-aloud - Twice Freed by Patricia St John. The book is a work of historical fiction, based on the Book of Philemon.
Julie really likes it so far, but Joseph can sense the 'romance' aspect of it...and, as a 9 yr old boy, I don't think he's quite thrilled with that -
Hopefully, that aspect won't be too heavy that it over-shaddow the 'message' of the book.
In science this week Julie is learning about the skeletal system of the body. we haven't made this weeks model yet - so I'll share her models from the past couple of weeks -
the skin:

and the eye:

For music, we begin our study of Mozart this week.
Unfortunately, as we did not buy the MFW 'deluxe package', and our library does not have the Mozart CD's we needed - we are sort of doing our own thing.
(It's okay though...I actually prefer it in this case) ;-)
We enjoyed the Opal Wheeler biography of Haydn so much, that we decided to read the Mozart one as well.

We are also doing our own unit study on instruments/sections of the orchestra
last week we studied the strings
This week I think we'll learn the brass family of instruments, as well as a bit of theory....

I also bought this wonderful book

It's sort of a more grownup version of the "Hymns for a Kids Heart" book that we loved so much a few years ago. We won't be reading all of the stories in it, but I thought for sure we would focus on the Christmas ones during this upcoming season.
But since it's November, I thought this one would be a great place to start

As for art - I have to admit - we've just sort of been doing 'crafty' things on our own.
Julie has been working on a latch hook kit, and beading;
Joseph has been drawing 3-D pictures, and working on a picture of the Roman Colosseum;
and the little girls have been having lots of fun sponge painting.

(I also wanted to mention that Katie took her first Light Unit test for the CLE Learning to Read program....she got 100%)
It's been a productive week. |

• Wednesday, November 11, 2009 - God's Way for God's People, part 2
Posted By diamondsintherough
As happens any time you make a strong statement in a public forum, I drew fire with yesterday's post. Read the comments.
Here's the point.
If you educate God's way, you are better off.
If you choose to homeschool, you are better off doing it God's way.
If you spend your money God's way, you are better off.
If you worship God the way he prescribed, you are better off.
If you nourish your body God's way, you are better off.
If you train up your children God's way, you are better off.
If you attend the church of God's choice, you are better off.
If you choose your friends God's way, you are better off.
If you spend your time God's way, you are better off.
Not better. Better off.
Homeschooling is not the salvation of our children's souls. Homeschooling does not give me a guarantee that my kids will be saved, sanctified, and serving the Lord. But I can see it from here.
Not better. Better off. |

• Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - God's Way for God's People

I've been thinking about that visit to our local high school. One person commented that it must be a really tough school. I'm thinking, as in inner city L.A./N.Y./Miami? This is what I would expect to see in inner city L.A., but we are out here in the middle of nowhere, AZ. I don't think we have a tough school, necessarily. Actually I think most high schools in America have come to this. As things have gone downhill with grades, teacher and student behavior, administrative foibles, and the endless black hole effect of pouring money into the school system, we have added more and more rules. No prayer. No Bibles. Carry I.D. Fenced-in campuses. Campus police. No pocket knives, squirt guns, bubble gum, aspirin, etc. It's just proof that you can't legislate righteousness. After putting all these rules into practice, we still have more problems.
The real problem with public school is in the heart of most of those who are involved with it -- government officials, board members, teachers, parents. The students are the victims. Public school is a mess that I don't want my kids to experience. With a different foundation (the Bible) and a different outlook, and a very different goal, public school could be a great ministry. But it isn't. And it's not God's way to begin with. It's one of those carts from 2 Samuel 6. When David saw that the Philistine heathen had put the ark of God on a new cart in 1 Samuel 6, he probably thought, What a great idea! That would be much more efficient than having the priests carry the ark. But putting the ark on a cart resulted in disaster for David and his people. God didn't care how the heathen transported the ark, but his own people were to follow the instructions he had given Moses. God's way was to carry the ark, no matter what extra work was involved. We (my family) are God's people. Public school has been around for a long, long time, but for God's people, it's a new cart. God's way to educate our children is to b ring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4. He gives us many warnings to keep away from the ways of the heathen (the heathen aren't just in deep dark Africa -- they shop at Wal*Mart) and to depart from those who teach contrary to God's word. Sure. It would be much more convenient to send my kids to school, and a lot less work for me. But it's not God's way at all. It's bound to result in disaster.
I don't believe the fact that we homeschool makes us better than you or anyone else. However, I do believe with all my heart that my children are better off than those who attend public school, and our home life is better off for it, too. Anything and everything in us that is good is not there because we are good, but because of the grace of God and the blood of Jesus Christ. No matter what other way is out there, we are content to do our schooling God's way. I feel sorry for those kids behind bars. And I feel sorry for those teachers, administrators and government people who can't figure out why their system isn't working. They'll never get it until they read and believe God's word and put it into practice. Public school is now a doomed system graduating doomed students (if they graduate at all). No new carts for us, thank you.
