Our Busy Little World
Apr. 6, 2007 - Heart Of Wisdom
Recently I've begun reading The Heart Of Wisdom Teaching Approach: Bible Based Homeschooling by Robin Sampson. Robin has packed so much information into this book (over 500 pages), and I'm only on chapter four. Later I plan to write a more comprehensive review of her book for those of you who may be interested. But for now I wanted to share a couple of the things I've learned from the beginning portion, and why I am thankful to have read it this week. The whole first section of her book is a study of the Israelites in the post-Exodus period; she is comparing it to her journey into homeschooling. It's been such a blessing to reread and ponder the journey the Israelites took after they left Egypt. It's easy to look back and marvel at how they failed to trust God, even after seeing His many miracles on their behalf. Yet I do the same thing so often! It has been a wonderful conviction and reminder to me to stop questioning when our house will sell, stop worrying that we should "go back" in some way, stop fretting in general. And as He gently reminds me to be anxious for nothing, God is truly filling me with His peace that passes understanding. One thing I realized is that God quite often delights in answering the prayers of His people "outside the box". I think about the Israelites when they were starving. I would imagine that the people assumed they needed to find a land with plentiful food, or return to Egypt (which, of course, they did think of) where there was food - or some other "logical" solution that would provide food for them. It's hard to imagine them simply praying that God would make it "rain" food. Yet that is how He chose to provide. Completely outside the box of typical thought. And I realized that I get too caught up in my "boxes" of thought. I assume that for God to provide for a particular need means that He will do one of the three logical options in my mind. But He has gently reminded me through reading this bookt the past few days that He is not limited by my imagination. And it seems, in our family's journey in particular, that He most often chooses to provide for and lead us in a way that makes it abundantly clear it was soley His doing and not our own. I am thankful that our Father is so patient with me, and reminds me of His provisions so gently. It reminds me that His yolk truly is easy and His burden light. I pray He gives me grace to go about the tasks He has given me each day, trusting His to weave them all together in His perfect plan.

One of the best things I learned from HOW is the 4 E's approach; which I cannot remember right (the accronym) now except for the process of exciting, exploring, expounding and explaining (was that right?) Anyhow, I did read a thought-provoking article in regards to Greek/Hebrew thought you may find interesting.

I have asked HOW for a rebuttal, bc I'm still trying to *get* it. Please do let me know when you write your review.

Thanks so much, Keri, for the thoughts as well as the link. It'll be interesting to read through this book, as many of the ideas seem quite appealing, yet I'm very much a lover of classical education! But I also enjoy being able to read books, enjoying their fruit regardless of any "pits". I appreciate the link to the article and it gives me some things to look into as I read. Anyway, keep checking back for a review - though I'm sure it will come after we move!!!

Sounds like good lessons you are learning. It reminds me of Mary and Martha, who expected Jesus to come and heal Lazarus- after all, He'd healed many others. Little did they know that Jesus was to reveal to them His power in a much greater way by allowing all their hope to die with their brother.
May the Lord bless you as you wait on Him, and as you celebrate His great and glorious resurrection this weekend!
Christ is Risen!

Love the book! You will learn sooo much. It was fascinating to me to learn the Hebraic method of education. I'm on a second read through. It is so much to absorb at one time!
Blessings,
Renee
