Our Busy Little World

Apr. 30, 2008 - Fresh New Reader

We officially have two little readers in our home! I have been teaching Hannah letter sounds, but didn’t really try to have her decode any words, as I didn’t figure she was quite ready to do it. Well, she sure proved me wrong! Today I told her to try just the first sound of the letter and see if she could figure out the word. She read all of these: sat, at, in, is, man, and a few other similar words. I guess I’ll get out the Bob books – such fun!

Fantastic! I did the same thing with my Son, and he was reading small chapter books at 4. Everyone asked what reading program I had used ( I wasn't homeschooling at the time yet), and I said, reading program??? I just taught him the sounds and then started teaching him blends...little did I know a couple months later I'd be homeschooling. :) It's so great when children start reading, it's music to our ears! I used to actually well up with tears when I'd hear my son read me an article at 4 and 5. He's now 7, almost 8, and listening to him read the Bible outloud gives me goosebumps. He reads it with such conviction, I usually feel like crying again. (I promise I"m not an emotional Mom.)
Sorry...this is all turning into a post about us...

Congrats to your girls and to you. :)
