Big Brother nation?

Posted in News items

I'm not usually one for politics, you're more likely to find me hunting for the escapee hamster or knee deep in baking with the kids (OK, so three kids and three recipes at once wasn't such a good idea). Anyway, back to a spot of politics...

The UK government is developing an 'Every Child Matters' policy making it the governements business to makes sure and measure whether children are achieving the agenda's 5 outcomes - enjoy and achieve, be safe, be healthy, acheive economic well being and make a positive contribution. Authorites are expected to show that an increasing number of children are eating 5 veg a day etc. Child care is to be made accessible to every family.

My problem with this is not that the government are trying to improve standards of living, but it's that while appearing to be 'pro' family, this policy and lots of others are stripping away the importance of parenting at it's very core.Their idea of providing for the family is to make child care cheaper so kids can be put aside while parents persue 'proper' lives. This cripples the family right at it's foundations. Numerous studies have documented the long term effects of sticking little ones in day care (eg penelope leach). Kids need the consistency warmth, security, inspiration of home. They need to know that their parents care enough to give them their greens and all that. Kids need home to be more than a pitstop and this starts right when they are tiny.

There. Got that off my chest!

My husband has just fallen asleep watching  match of the day so I'm off the the schoolhouse store (hsb home page)to spend, spend spend as it's FREE SHIPPING TO THE UK!

(OK so I might just compile a wish list and poke him awake first!)

love

Jane - I totally agree!!! The 'every child counts' is also the bill that lists home educated children in the 'at risk' catagory along with the foster kids and children whose parents are known to social services for various reasons!!!! So this really does affect home educators DIRECTLY! We have a headmistress in our church and she said that the proposal plans to have children dropped off at school from 7am for their breakfast at school, stay in school all day, have all afterschool activities on the school ground, be in a homework club on school ground and then have their tea at school. They would then be picked up by parents at 7pm in time to go home and go to sleep!!! We already have one of these 'super schools' being built in our town right now. They are even moving the local leisure center there so the kids can continue their after school activities at the center without leaving the school ground!!! As you said, in some ways the bill sounds good, until you find out just what it means in practice. It's fine for them to be in that school with the same teachers all day long, but our kids are indanger of being listed as 'at risk' because they are in our homes all day in our care!!! Talk about crazy! I know of other home ed groups who are fighting the 'every child counts' bill because it might mean we will have to be inspected by the LEA (which we have chosen to do anyway - we have nothing to hide! And we have a very supportive inspector) but I think the time is coming for us to stand up against this bill because the affects on the children as Jane outlined above. I'm not usually one for campaigning, but in this case I feel that it is a case of 'all it takes for evil to prosper is for good men (and women) to do nothing'! In danger of stepping on Gena's toes :0) BRING THEM HOME!!!! Before the state takes over all of their day.

March 24, 2006 - Thanks for this

- it's scary how protecting the needs of those who really are at risk encroaches on those who are least at risk and in fact more likely to be getting the benefits the Government is wanting the rest to get. Real shades of Big Brother, from what I remember of the book.
Oh, and while I'm here - I don't know how to send a separate post, but I have this link on my clipboard: http://www.ethnomath.org/ - great place to browse around. I found a very useful article on Islamic Art which tied in with our Maths about symmetry. There's a ton of other interesting stuff there too.

Hi
Another dodgy bill to take alook at and perhaps write to your MP about is the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill. It looks pretty harmless and the Governments "intentions" are to cut red tape for businesses. Actually what it will do is give Ministers the ability to change and introduce laws without going through Parliament. Doesn't sound very democratic to me. I have written to my MP and had a good response and opposition parties are pushing for safeguards to be put into the Bill. It won't do any harm though to let the Politicians know that we are not all asleep!!!!
I am feeling rather politically charged can't you tell????!!!!!
