Registration but no restrictions!!

Posted in News items

Now this is what I call a result!! The news is in that the Badman report is recommending mandatory registration but no restrictions on the way we home educate. Whoo Hoo!!!!

Here is the report on the BBC website.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/8093796.stm

Another article on the BBC yesterday with long quotes from Ann Newstead from EO.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/8017036.stm

Here is one from the Telegraph

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/5496798/Home-education-crackdown-over-abuse-fear.html

Here is an article in the Guardian this morning regarding the report.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2009/jun/11/home-education-parents-register

The following quotes are from the Guardian's article.

'The schools secretary, Ed Balls, is expected to accept in full recommendations made in a review of home education for mandatory registration to ensure that families are not using home tuition as a cover for abuse.'

and

'Balls told a private meeting of chiefs of local safeguarding children boards yesterday: "His [Badman's] review is based on the need to strike the right balance between two important principles: giving parents the right to decide how and where their children should be educated – because I am clear that parents bring up their children, not government – and ensuring that every child gets the education they need to help them fulfil their potential.'

I find it encouraging that the schools secretary is being clear that we as parents raise our children NOT the government!  I think this is a real result for home education in this country. For starters it validates home education as a viable option for all parents! Yeah!!!

I believe the important thing now is that we don't fight this ruling. First of all fighting so little 'interference' only makes us look like we have something to hide - which we don't! Also, if we are reasonable about registering we will have more leverage to fight them if they try to add unreasonable regulations in future. 'We worked with you this far but now you are pushing it!'

The fact that there are no recommendations to restrict the content of our home education settings is the biggest victory here! We can still do things the way we want. We only have to let someone know we are doing it. Makes sense to me!

June 11, 2009 - badman review

Please read the full report VERY carefully. Certain areas of the review are extremely vague and could easily be open to abuse. I, personally find the notion that the authorities could demand to see a child without a parent or guardian present questionable. I am afraid that strings are attached, even if they are well disguised.

I cannot believe that you can be so stupid as not to realise that this authoritarian government _hates_ anything that it cannot control - and that includes home educators.
Badman (so very aptly named) "validates" home education? Words fail me. What utter, unadulterated, balderdash. This is an evil review that is being warmly welcomed by an evil government. It is based on absolutely NO evidence whatsoever and should be resisted by every freedom loving person in the land.

I am going to assume you posted this before actually reading the document. You will see when you do read it that we have no guarentees at all that curriculum will not be inflicted on us. The LAs must approve our curriculum choices or we wont be allowed to register.
Please do read it carefully. This is a terrible attack on home educators and all parents.

This is a link to the actual review document.
I am sure upon reading it you will see that it tries to replace parents with the state; will encroach on curriuclum choices and goes as far as insisting that these people must have access uninvited and unwanted into our homes to see our children.
Please do read it and then I would be interested in your views.

I rang the council recently to find that private tutors don't need to be registered to practice. This is absurd in light of compulsory registration for us. I am not against regstration, as we have been always registered anyway through choice. I cannot see how you can think it a good thing that they have the right to interview our dc alone, at present this only happens in child abuse cases and we should not be treated any different.
we do not agree with autonomous approach, but who are we to say, as long as their children are capable, it is their children not ours and children are the responsibility of parents, not the government.
Registration does not neccessarily validate something.
