Good - Better - Best
Like our national government, God has given us all three branches of power to use in our own personal government of ourselves:
Legislative - this is where we decide the things that we will do or say
Judicial - this is the part that decides if this is a good thing to do or say
Executive - this is the branch that executes the action or words
So in the process of using these 3 branches of power each and every day I recently read a great idea to use to guide us in this process and it involves comparatives and superlatives. In Elizabeth George's book "A Woman after God's Own Heart" she tells of using the Good-Better-Best test when making desicions. She shared how she found herself on the road an awful lot of time each week and so decided that she could use this time more wisely by listening to something edifying while driving, so she started listening to classical music - Good - she then started wondering if there was something better she could be doing and thus began listening to sermons that she had on tape - Better - but then she realized she was missing the very Best thing she could be doing and from that point on listened to the Bible on tape.
What a great way to measure everything we do! There are so many ways to use this process of elimination
- Is what I am eating nutritious? Is there something more nutritious? What would be most nutritious?
-Is what I am saying encouraging to others? Is there something I could say that would be more encouraging? What can I say that would be most encouraging?
- Is this a good use of my time? Is there something I could be doing that would be better? What is the best use of my time right now?
- Is this purchase necessary? Is there a greater need for this money? What is the greatest need for this money? |

In the example you stated from Elizabeth George, I remember that there was even a better "best" (I'm not sure it was in the book or if another person shared the same illustration), but the best best was when she started memorizing Scripture as she drove in the car. Further evidence that even when we think we're doing the best, we need to be evaluating whether there's an even better best. :)
