Under His Construction

• Oct. 10, 2007 - Staging Veggies for Your Kids! (WFMW)

Have you ever watched that show on HGTV called 'Designed to Sell'? I love this show.  The premise behind the show is that for a little money you can fix your house up and stage it to sell quickly.  I have learned a lot of great tips from this show.  Lately though I have been pondering what else in life can be approached this way. Is it possible to tweak other things just a little in order to make it more 'sellable'? Well I do believe this idea could also work on our children when it comes to eating their veggies and I have found a great way to 'sell' them to your kiddos! Interested?

On the show the house is staged to make a good first impression on the potential buyers so that they will remember it as one of their favorites through their search for their new home.  Well the same basic idea applies to how we present the veggies to the kids for the first time.  You want them to remember this veggie as one that they loved. So how is this done? Well when you introduce the veggie do it in a very kid friendly fashion - for example -

Introducing zucchini? How about in zucchini bread?

Broccoli? Smother it in cheese sauce! Mmmm!

Spinach? Add fresh leaves to your lettuce for a yummy green salad.

 Brussel Sprouts? Try this recipe.

Cabbage? Here's a yummy salad!

Sweet Potatoes? Cut them into cubes along with your favorite other variety of potato (red, gold, russet) and toss with enough olive oil to coat, season with salt and pepper to taste and bake in a 400 degree oven until they are golden brown with a nice crisp outside. Your kids will love these! Turnips and yams are also very good this way!  Or you could also make a sweet potato or yam pie just like a pumpkin pie!

And finally one of our favorite recipes works well for introducing all sorts of veggies! I always add onions (grated), carrots (grated) and celery to this plus whatever else I have on hand like broccoli, peppers, zucchini (grated), peas, mushrooms, etc.  My two youngest actually claim this as their very favorite meal!!

Here's the recipe:

Top Ramen Egg Foo Young (we call it 'Fried Noodle Patties')

1 pkg. ramen noodles(any flavor)

3 eggs (beaten)

1 cup assorted cut up and/or grated veggies

Boil noodles 1 minute and drain. Mix noodles with eggs, veggies, and seasoning packet.

Fry mixture in patties on a hot greased fry pan until both sides are golden.

• Oct. 10, 2007 - Brussells Sprouts

Mom2fur of Sortafrugal.blogspot.com here. That brussels sprouts recipe looks amazing...definitely have to try it. My kids are adults (well, the youngest is 17) but it never hurts to try something new. My daughter and I love brussels sprouts. You don't want to know what my husband calls them. But the trick, I think, is to use the fresh ones.
Presenting something new in a fun and pleasant way is more likely to get your kids to try it, as opposed to the 'you'll sit there until you finish every last pea' approach, LOL! You're one smart mommy!

Hi again from Mom2fur! Another way to save ink: when the cartridge seems low, take it out and give it a shake. Sometimes, that will give you quite a few extra pages!

This is a great idea. My kids loved veggies early on, but now aren't too crazy about them.

BTW, I didn't think about my windowsills...It has been ages since I cleaned those;)

Mom2fur-
I love brussel sprouts too! Mmmm! Glad you enjoyed the tip - and thank you for the ink cartidge tip - I need lots of help in the computer department! ( :

writmm-
Yes - my kids too - I have a 3yo who is always suspicious of what I am making and whether he likes it - he doesn't remember - so this has worked well on him!
Oh and you don't even want to see my windowsills! Ugh!

Warmly,
Mandi
