Comforter -- Meditation on Isaiah 40
“Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.
“Speak tenderly (comfortably) to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins.
“A voice of one calling: ‘In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.
“Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.
“And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.’"
Isaiah 40:1-5
I have been meditating on these verses lately. As is so often the case, my mind wandered to things of the home, in this case, quilted sewing projects. “Comfort my people” reminds me of comforters for beds, as well as any quilted sewing project. I have a pattern for a quilted wallet and a “Numbered Quilt” designed to teach counting skills to preschoolers. Oh, the gift ideas I have for the grandchildren!
As a thick blanket provides comfort, protecting the physical body from wintry cold, so God has sent His Comforter, the Holy Spirit, to comfort and protect our spiritual bodies from the icy cold hatred of Satan and his minions. “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;” (John 14:16)
If you make gifts for others, pray for that person as you work. When you wrap a gift, pray that God will wrap His Holy Spirit around the recipient as a comforter.
“The light of the Christmas star to you…
The warmth of home and hearth to you…
The cheer and good will of friends to you…
The hope of a childlike heart to you…
The joy of a thousand angels to you…
The love of the Son and God’s peace to you.”
