Aug. 16, 2007 - A New Season: BJU Press HomeSat
We are beginning a new phase in our homeschooling journey that my husband and I believe will help us to better reach our homeschooling and family goals. We are going to be using a more structured curriculum and we have chosen BJU Press.
We began last year using My Father's World First Grade and it did not work for us. It was not a complete program (I misunderstood and thought that it was). It definitely needed serious supplementation in math, phonics, science and history. Also, the type of Bible study we were ready to move into was more doctrine-based so I also had to supplement that.
Despite spending a lot of time organizing and purchasing additional materials, I did not feel that my son was getting a good education. I think that this fact combined with the fact that I was spending too much time outside of the house on extracurricular activities made for a disappointing year in some ways.
We did have a lot of fun but I spent way too much time feeling guilty because I could see that my child was not progressing at the rate that we wanted.
What a relief when halfway through the school year I discovered BJU Press. I initially just began with math and phonics and God truly blessed me by allowing me to find many of the new textbooks and readers that I needed at our local Christian bookstore on sale and Chase's Grandma generously bought some of the other items that we needed for our mid-year switch.
And what an incredible difference I noticed immediately! Before encountering BJU, I thought that WalMart workbooks were no different than professionally produced ones specifically made for schools and homeschools and I was wrong.
I began to enjoy my role as teacher and Chase was learning so much so quickly. I realized that my previous method was not challenging him nearly enough in part because I was just not presenting him with all the information that he could gladly handle.
Because of this experience and the desire to start Alyssa with the BJU approach from the beginning, we have chosen to begin using BJU Press HomeSat.
More on that in the next post about this phase of our homeschooling journey, what I have learned about less-structured homeschooling as it relates to our family and a closer look at some of the advantages of textbook-based learning and how it has actually helped us to become more relaxed with our homeschooling, enjoy it more and allow more delight-directed learning in our home.
