Recommendations, Please?

I know it's kind of premature but I'm a planner, what can I say? Between my pregnancy and moving and a host of other issues that have come up this year, I have not done much Kindergarten with Emily at all. Very, very little phonics and just a little math ... mostly just reading books and the occasional arts and crafts. We do Bible, history, and science as a family (more or less) so I am trying to decide what get for her for 1st grade for phonics/language arts and math. She is not one to pick up on new concepts easily at all ... as much as I hate it I think we will have to drill, drill, drill. She does better with manipulatives than with workbooks, but she LOVES workbooks! And I am the kind of person who needs SIMPLE yet structured, organized lesson plans or it just won't get done. (For example, we have had Spelling Power for 2 years now but haven't even started because the teacher's instructions are so long and complex!) What will accommodate her learning style AND my teaching style? Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help!

I like Spelling Power, but I don't really use it per the exact instructions. I like how the words are in groups with the rules and how the reuse the hard words over and over and reinforce them!

I can give you more detailed instructions on how we use it if you'd like.

For phonics I used a combination of www.starfall.com (which is free and has printable activity sheets) and www.progressivephonics.com which costs $20, is a download product, and also contains worksheets that reinforce the work being learned.

You're are doing great! Its these early years that should be fun and enjoyable. Especially for pregnancy times. Do what you can and leave the rest. Just what you are doing is fine. Simple days....reading and a little numbers. The rest can wait. If you truly want a curriculum, I suggest Explode the Code. Of all the ones I've used, I love it! I'm currently using it for 2 of my 5 children. I wish I would have known about it with my 1st, not sure it was even out then. But its not overwhelming at all. You can go at your own pace or her pace. Check it out and see what you think. If you need more info, I'd be happy to help.
