Making the First Day of Home School Special
Public school starts back next Tuesday, after Labor Day.
Even though we've already started our home schooling, we like to make the first day public starts back special and memorable for our kids.
Here are some ideas:
- lunch in the park
- day trip to the beach, lake or pool
- extending a three-day weekend into four and missing the crowds and traffic
- back-to-school shopping--the malls are empty
- "retail field trip" to a homeschool book store or an educational supply store. We especially like Moore Expressions in Virginia Beach and The Scholar Ship in Aquia, Virginia.
- favorite meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner
- bake a favorite treat together
- extra reading time together on the couch
- trip out for ice cream
- library time--also practically empty
- field trip to a historical site like Williamsburg, Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian in D.C., etc.
September is one of the best months for homeschool field trips. The weather is glorious and public schools haven't usually planned their trips yet.
Also, many places offer Homeschool Days with special reduced rates to make it more affordable. |
