Unclean Food

I was reading Deuteronomy 14 today, and found some interesting information about what we're supposed to eat.

I don't eat pork. They are a very unclean animal, and they will eat anything - including dead pigs and fetuses. I haven't eaten pork for several year and always been questioned about this. Is it a religion thing? Well, no, I guess not. I did not stop eating pork because of the laws in the OT. I stop eating pork for the same reasons in the OT though. Pigs are such a dirty animal that the Holy people of the Lord, Israel aren't even allowed to touch them. It was an unclean thing, and I imagine that with what pigs eat it's not healthy for you either. I think if we all went back to eating food according to the Bible we would all be healthier. I mean the Lord made all the animals. He knows what's good and what's bad.

Verse 8: And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.

I don't eat bottom-feeders either - such as shrimp, lobster, and crab - because the Bible says not to eat anything that doesn't have scales or fins. Not to mention that all the waste (human and sea) that settles on the bottom of the ocean is what the above eats, and then we them. It's been hard for me because I do like shrimp, lobster, crab, honey-glazed ham, but it's not worth my health.

While reading on in chapter 14, I saw we're not supposed to eat rabbit. Hmmm.. I had never really thought about this before. I know a lot of people who go hunting and have eaten rabbit. I've even wanted to try some, but the Bible says it's an unclean animal. *crosses rabbit off list*

Verse 7 Nevertheless these ye shall not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the cloven hoof; as the camel, and the hare, and the coney: for they chew the cud, but divide not the hoof; therefore they are unclean unto you.

It puzzles me exceedingly that people disregard what's bad for them because they want to eat it. I mean really nasty foods... like pork.

Another thing I hadn't noticed before was that the Lord said we could drink fermented drink... which is beer, ale, wine. Did you know that beer has a lot of b-vitamins and is good for your health? Why then is it exposed as a bad thing, you ask? Because people abuse it. They drink too much and they get harm people and eventually drinking so much will harm them, but it’s not wrong to drink beer.

Verse 26 And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,

I am learning alot by reading my Bible from cover to cover, and I am so glad because I know what the Bible says about things, but I didn't know word-for-word. Now, I am beginning to.

Is this your first time reading the Bible all the way through??

I am doing the same thing..I started back in May I think it was, and I'm currently in Job. It is very interesting, and you can learn a lot...The books that you think are just boring, actually have some pretty cool verses hidden in amongst the less exciting stuff!! I'm thrilled with all that I'm learning!!

Miss Lois dear, how far have you gotten in your Bible reading? In Romans (for example, chapter 7) Paul talks about how Christ came to free us from the law. We’re not bound to the Old Testament rituals anymore like Israel was. In Jesus we have freedom. From the first part of your post it sounds like you believe this, but I just wanted to make sure. If you don’t want to eat certain things, you have the freedom to do that and there’s nothing wrong with it. But also know that it is okay to eat those things. Everything in moderation is a good rule. :-)

In Acts 10:9-16, Paul has a vision where God tells him not to call any animal unclean that He created.

In Mark 7:14-19, Jesus Himself talks about how nothing that a person consumes will defile him. It’s only things that come out of people’s hearts (like theft, murder, envy, etc.) that will make us unclean.

It is neat to see how everything fits together when you read the Bible straight through. I pray that God would continue to bless your reading.

Love,
Mandy

I had no idea that you this blog existed and it is brilliant :) I look forward to coming back to not only read but to learn more too.

Well done.

On your latest post, I am also thinking about stopping eating pork altogether. I guess I got to the place whereby I just stopped buying any pork except for pork and apple sausages (which I love) but even these I will stop buying though.

Speak soon

Hmm...your point about unclean foods is true I suppose. We can look back at the OT and see how God was protecting His people by not allowing them to eat those foods. However, nowadays I feel it's okay to eat them.

1. We are no longer bound by the OT law, but by the fulfillment of the law, Jesus Christ.

2. We have tons of modern technology that processes food so that it's perfectly clean and healthy.

My health hasn't suffered from eating an occasional pork chop or shrimp stir-fry. I'm not too conservative. ;-) lol!!

Love ya girl,

Jan. 4, 2008 - Keeping kosher is fine for Christians too!

Posted by JimDunlop
I came across this Blog completely by chance but felt compelled to respond to some of the comments.

Something that many Christians try so earnestly to do, is to "force freedom" onto their brethren. WHY would you want to keep kosher when Jesus has freed us from the yoke of such laws and such oppression?

People who think along these lines need to realize that FREEDOM also means freedom to choose to maintain and uphold God's laws, even though Jesus may have fulfilled them. Even though one those who have commented did indeed mention this fact, she is still hung up on the fact that someone might choose to keep the kosher laws.

Always remember, the GRACE granted by God to His children cannot exist without the LAW. The Jewish people delight in the law! It is something to be cherished and honored. Too many Christians have the misconception that the Jews were poor, oppressed wretches that were set free only when Jesus came to earth! Not so! You cannot claim to love God without also loving the law. After all, God created the law. It is through knowledge and respect for the law that we can gain an understanding and appreciation for the grace and forgiveness that comes when the law is broken. THIS is the power of Jesus. And that is also the reason why the law can never be abolished -- it is the foundation of our understanding of right and wrong, and of God's universe. What Jesus meant when he said that he came to fulfill the law rather than abolish it is not even so much in regards to the law itself, but rather to what the law had become. The pharisees and sadducees had turned something wonderful and beautiful into something hard, unyielding and painful. That is the wrong that Jesus came to correct -- not the law itself.

In addition, I'd like to point out that Acts 10:9-16 is probably one of the most commonly used Christian justifications for not keeping kosher, and yet, it is almost categorically misunderstood and misquoted by just about everyone who reads it. It has, in fact, nothing to do with unkosher foods being called kosher, at all -- as this would annul God's laws. He made them for a reason -- he did not create the laws only so they would be removed from relevance at a later date.

The message here in Acts deals with a dual (equivalence in) spirituality. Peter's perception of other CHRISTIANS being the issue at stake! Do not call Christians who are of gentile upbringing any less sanctified than those Christians of Jewish heritage who have come to faith. The Gospel was brought to the Jew first and then to the Gentile. Both have come to the same faith in Jesus, but please, don't question a Jew's diet and accuse him of being any less free in Christ than the Gentile. THAT is the true meaning of Acts 10. It is a metaphor!

To make it simple, I'd just like to say something that my own (Messianic) rabbi is fond of saying. "We don't GOT to. We GET to." Meaning, that if you choose to observe/not observe, or follow/not follow the laws of kosher, or any of the God-appointed times or festivals or fasts or feasts, then God bless you in your decision! But whatever you decide, whether to observe or not observe, may it be for the greater glory of God.

Dear Mandy,
I used to eat these filthy meats and have come to realize that the law of unclean foods is still in effect. When you quoted :
"In Acts 10:9-16, Paul has a vision where God tells him not to call any animal unclean that He created."
Your statement is patently false and misleading, because the true meaning of the vision is that the jews should not call the gentiles unclean. The scriptures are crystal clear on the subject.
You said and misquoted the scripture:

In Mark 7:14-19, Jesus Himself talks about how nothing that a person consumes will defile him. It’s only things that come out of people’s hearts (like theft, murder, envy, etc.) that will make us unclean.

The subject is eating with unwashed hands.
Again Jesus himself clarified the stament that it is eating with dirty hands does not make a man unclean.

We need to tell Mandy and other Christians not to quote just a single verse out of the whole chapter without considering the whole context. It is stated in Bible (I do not have to say 'stated clearly'. I just need to show the proof) that unclean meat is not to be eaten:

What Our Country Needs

What does our country need? Not armies standing with sabers gleaming ready for the fight; Not increased navies, skillful and commanding, to bound the waters with an iron might; Not haughty men with glutted purses trying to purchase souls, and keep the power of place; Not jeweled dolls with another vying for palms of beauty, elegance, and grace, but we want women, strong of soul, yet lowly with rare meekness, born of gentleness; The woman whom all-little children bless; Brave, earnest women, helpful to each other, with finest scorn for all things low and mean; Women who hold the names of wife and mother far nobler than the title of a Queen.
