The Family Business

Have you ever thought of your family as a company. I never really thought of it that way until I came across The Busy Moms Guide to a Happy, Organized Home by Kathy Peel. In it she explains how a mom is really a CEO of the most important company ever founded, The Family. She explains that as CEO we have several departments to manage, she came up with 6, I came up with 7 becuase homeschooling is a department in itself. All us moms instinctivly know this. Women were created for this, if you read up on current brain research you know that there is a huge mountain of evidence that shows that men think linearly where women thing globally. God actually designed our brains to think differently so that we can be better equipped to handle this monumental task. This is not to say that our husbands don't have valuable information to offer, my husband is a military medic he definatly falls into the linear thinking category. He understands the importance and value of focusing on one task at a time. He's helped me a great deal in wrapping my mind around the model of the Family Business. So your probably wondering what are these departments that we have to manage on a day to day basis, well you'll probably recognize most of them even though you may not have thought of them as departments to the oldest corporation known to man. But here they are: Home and Property
This includes everything you have to do to manage your home and property from maintaining the yard to cleaning the house to making regular repairs and handling the crisis that come along like the beehive that decided to take up residence under your eves.
Food This department manages everything from grocery shopping and meal planning to preperations and regular clean-up.
Family and Friends Here you manage all the aspects of your families relationship with each other from your marriage ot your kids. As well as extended family relationships and community relationships with your church and friends.
Finances This is the department where all the financial aspects of life are handled from making the money through a part-time or full-time job to paying the bills, managing credit reports and maintaing records of home and property for insurance and estate reasons.
Calendar Department Here is where we manage all aspects of the calendar from coordinating various appointments, field trips and extra-curricular activites to dr. and dentist appts etc...This is also the department in charge of coordinating special events and ensuring that all neccessary preperations are taken care of.
Self-Management Lets face it with so much else to do this is the easiest area to fudge on. We all do it and reasonably so. But this is the place where you get to pray, brush your teeth and hair and actually put on clean clothes that might make it to breakfast and find a way to exercise with 4 kids in tow (yes that is actually possible)
Homeschool This is the department where we manage all the aspects of homeschooling from making curriclum decisions, to daily lesson planning and implementation.
Of course as any mom knows you can't really break out life into neat little departments. Life just isn't that way it all happens simultaneously but looking at the various aspects can help in a lot of ways. First it can help you see how each department is working and determine if there are any changes that need to be made to help it run more efficiently. It can also help you see where you might be able to delegate some responsibilities to other members of the house or you might even find that you really need some outside help.
