Community Service in Our HomeschoolAaron turned 8 this past year and he has become more interested in helping out. I have been wanting to get him involved in some community service projects for a while but I wasn't having a lot of luck finding something for a young boy to do. I came across a program called roots and shoots a couple months ago and have been mostly lurking around on there message boards. But I am finally getting over my morning sickness and am looking to help Aaron get a little more involved. So were starting a project called "Under the Bridge" with them. The project is to collect items and create care packages for a group of homeless teenagers that are living under a bridge here in our home town. From what I understand these are kids who have been kicked out of their homes and now live together, nonviolently and without using drugs. Some have jobs, others don’t, but they all support each other. We will be collecting items for several months and working on sewing special mats for them and putting the packages together in pillowcases tied with shoelaces so they can easily carry them. It should be a good experience for him and he gets to use a lot of his talents in the process like talking (asking for donations) and sewing (I know boys aren't supposed to sew...shhh don't tell his friends). Check back for updates...we'll be letting you know how things are going! |
