COLUMBIA KIDS, A nEW ONLINE KIDS MAGAZINE, LAUNCH PARTY
thursday, August 14, 2008 4-8pm
Help us celebrate the launch of the Washington State Historical Society’s new online magazine for kids, COLUMBIAKids. Meet the writers, illustrators, and people who inspired the premiere issue’s feature stories. Enjoy author readings, special “back story” presentations, and a book signing reception for Northwest Book Swap authors. It’s a great event for the whole family.
Here’s a sneak peak at our exciting line-up of guest presenters:
Kelley Balcomb-Bartok of the Center for Whale Research in Friday Harbor. Mr. Balcomb-Bartok will share his insights into the history of the Orca captures in Puget Sound as he presents the first ever public viewing of the late Dr. Merrill P. Spencer's photographic collection dating back to Moby Doll (1964) and Namu (1965), the very first killer whales brought into captivity.
Dr. Jonathan Elias, Director of the Akhmim Mummy Studies Consortium. Dr. Elias will present the latest theories concerning mummies from the ancient Egyptian city of Akhmim and discuss how new scanning technologies can extract vital clues about the life of the priest Ankh-Wennefer, the Society’s own Akhmimic mummy.
Joanna Sikes, Director of Special Projects for the Chihuly Studio. Ms. Sikes will take us on an insider’s journey back to Jerusalem 2000 and the installation of Washington artist Dale Chihuly’s extraordinary Glass Exhibition at the Tower of David Museum.
This program is free and open to the public.
