"Credits and Grades and Transcripts, Oh My! - Take Two!", Dec. 5, 2009 Web Seminar ALL OVER
I enjoyed listening to this and took notes yesterday. Lee Binz is airing this again Saturday, Dec. 5th, 2009. She recommends listening to this before your students enter the high school years but it's good information if they are already in high school too.

Homeschooling the High Schooler
|
_____________________________________________
It's never too early to begin gathering information about homeschooling through high school. Regardless of our children's future dreams and aspirations--whether they want to graduate and begin missionary work, own their own businesses, learn a trade, or attend college, for many homeschooling parents, homeschooling through high school seems daunting. However, with the impressive selection of high school curricula and resources on the market, the explosion of online classes, and the increasing overall support, homeschooling high school is not as tough as you think!
One mom shares her tips for organizing a high school student. Even if high school is still a few years off for your family, you'll want to keep this list as a reference.
_____________________________________________
5 Ways to Organize Your High School Student
by Susan Spann
1. Planner up! Make or give your student his or her own day planner, preferably one with hourly divisions. Let the student mark independent study time, and periodically transfer that record to your own master planner. Not only will your student learn to track and organize time, but an individual planner also fosters independence and responsibility.
2. Clock in, clock out-always have a clock about; Older students should have a clock or timepiece available in every room they use for school or study. Teach them to pay attention to the times they start and stop studying, as well as how much work they achieve in each session. Don't put inappropriate pressure or emphasis on speed; the timing technique is designed to help your student learn his or her standard pace and estimate the time required to complete a given task. Knowing this makes it easier to schedule time--a major component of an organized day!

You CAN homeschool through
high school!
Read our newest E-Book!
Do the words homeschool and high school make you a bit uneasy? Are you unsure if you have what it takes to teach higher-level curricula? Are hints of weakness discouraging you?
Be inspired and encouraged by experienced homeschoolers as they direct you back to the all powerful Superintendent of
Christian Homeschools--God! TOS brings help in:
Help, Lord, I'm Getting Ready to Start Homeschooling My High Schooler!
Enjoy getting to know other homeschoolers in the pages of the Help, Lord . . . E-Book. Many include photos of themselves and their families--get to know them as fellow homeschoolers as they bless you with their kind words of encouragement and point you toward the finish line that is homeschooling through high school. You can do this!

_____________________________________________________
3. Set Aside "My Space". Middle and high schoolers have more books, papers, and projects than elementary students, along with a growing need for personal space. Give your student a special place, separate from and inaccessible to younger siblings, to store books and other course work. A personal desk with cubbies or shelves works best, but creative solutions work too! Consider one shelf on a bookcase, a drawer in a filing cabinet, or even a milk crate turned sideways. Let your student organize and maintain the space in his or her own way. Encourage neatness, but leave room for your student to develop an individual method of organization.
4. Color Coordinate. Let your teen pick a color for each subject and mark or label related materials with matching colors. For example, if the English book has a blue cover, use a blue spiral notebook for essays and blue divider tabs to mark English assignments in three-ring binders (or a blue binder, if you have one for English alone). Removable colored stickers can also mark books, bindings, and folders.

5. Teach academic organization. Don't assume your teens automatically know how to organize! You taught them to clean their rooms--help them learn to clean their academic houses. Talk about using separate notebooks (or separate sections) for different subjects,
and talk about keeping each subject's notes, flashcards, books, and tests together. Mixing everything up leads to confusion and costs precious minutes that could be spent in study--or recreation.
Bonus Tip: If your student has trouble figuring out how to highlight or underline important information in textbooks, consider the use of multiple colors to help with organization. For example, underline new words or definitions in red, critical facts in yellow, and important people or places in blue. Not only will this help your student focus on the kind of information he or she underlines, but finding the right passage is a snap the second time around! If you don't or can't permit writing on the pages, colored Post-it Notes serve the same purpose without creating permanent marks.

Homeschoolers are often asked what they will do for high school; first, because your child "won't have a diploma;" second, because your child "won't be ready for college." With colleges and universities actually seeking out homeschoolers, it's been proven that the concerns of our well-meaning friends and families are not something we need to worry about.
Still, as homeschoolers, we don't have school guidance counselors to help us and our student figure out college planning. It's even more challenging for those of us who don't have our own college planning experiences from which to glean. When should the SAT be taken? How do we find out about scholarships and financing? What about sports scholarships? My College Options, and Terry Wilfong, have these answers and more!
Read our TOS interview with Terry Wilfong of My College Options Here.

| Have a wonderful Mother's Day! |
|
Dear Homeschool Mom or Grandma,
A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her.
Proverbs 31:10, 26-28 (NIV)

Thank you for homeschooling your children! It's a big job, and you will be appreciated for generations to come.
Blessings,
Lee

The HomeScholar Gold Care Club: Homeschooling High School Information
| |
|
|
|
Dear Homeschooling Parent,
We have had an overwhelming response to The HomeScholar mini-course called "The 5 Biggest Mistakes Parents Make Homeschooling High School." It made me realize that there was a huge hunger within the homeschool community for information on how to go about homeschooling high school. As part of that mini-course, I asked subscribers to identify their "Biggest Question" about homeschooling high school. One of my favorite biggest questions was very short: |
|
"How can we do this????????????"
I'm pretty sure those 12 question marks represent the 12 years of homeschooling!
I understand the skepticism. When we started junior high, we weren't certain we "had what it takes" to homeschool high school. Yes, my kids were doing fine academically; and to the shock of our extended family, socialization wasn't a problem. We understood the "Why" of homeschooling high school, but we were pretty weak on the "What" and especially the "How." So I did what I've always done when faced with a great unknown....Research!
It's true - research is my favorite stress coping mechanism. I purchased/checked out/borrowed every homeschooling high school book available and spent the better part of a year reading and taking notes. I gradually became convinced that my husband and I could do this thing. So...
We put together a high school plan and, presto, it went perfectly!
OK, so it wasn't THAT easy. But it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. It was also "rewarding," "amazing," and most shockingly, "fun!"

How did it turn out?
The results were beyond our wildest dreams. You see, both my boys graduated after eight years of homeschooling independently. Both went off to college in the fall after earning four-year full-tuition scholarships to their first choice university.
When my boys left for college, I decided to start The HomeScholar to help other parents homeschool high school. At first, I was doing a lot of private consulting with families. Soon it became apparent that the need for consulting was much greater than the hours in a day.
Matt and I brainstormed how we could provide assistance to a greater number of families. Families that were either considering or committed to homeschooling high school but didn't know where to start.
- We wanted a place where families could get the homeschooling high school help they needed - when then needed it - without having to schedule an appointment.
- We wanted a way to be able to give personalized help to many families at once and to communicate our best information in a timely manner to everyone.
- We wanted to get critical training courses into the hands of the families who needed them without spending a lot of time packaging and shipping.
- Plus, we wanted to do it in a way that was affordable to families who couldn't necessarily afford private consultations.
So....
The HomeScholar Gold Care Club Was Born!
What is this Gold Care Club? Think of it as a personal homeschooling high school support group - but without the lukewarm coffee or hard metal chairs. A support group where you can get your questions answered by me, The HomeScholar - a veteran homeschool mom and trusted friend.
We are launching The HomeScholar Gold Care Club on Tuesday April 21 at 12 noon (Pacific Time.)
Knowing the precise time is important because this offer will be filled with wonderful bonuses and surprise gifts for the first people to join. But even if you aren't one of the early purchasers, you'll be amazed at what is included.
I will be sending you more information about the Gold Care Club in the coming weeks. Plus, you will get to see EXACTLY what is on the Gold Care Club site so you can make an educated decision on whether it is right for your family. I look forward to sharing with you the details of this exciting offer.
I believe this will be the perfect solution for many families who desire to homeschool high school and do it with excellence!
Until next time,
Blessings,
Lee
PS. Here's what two moms said about their membership to the Gold Care Club that was included in their "Easy Truth About Homeschool Transcripts" ebook purchase:

Lee,
Thanks so much for your time and encouragement. It is just what I need, to have an experienced, objective soul take a look at what I've done. It is a blessing to have technology when used to purposes such as this! You are so right; time is critical and I'm working on changes now. Thanks again.

Washington Aerospace Scholars- A Program for High School Students
From: Melissa Edwards <MEdwards@museumofflight.org>
Subject: Washington Aerospace Scholars- a program for high school students
Hello-
I wanted to take a moment to let you know about the program I administer: Washington Aerospace Scholars. In June 2006, Governor Gregoire and Superintendent Bergeson first announced the creation of Washington Aerospace Scholars, a program based at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, which encourages high school juniors from across Washington State to explore the challenges and opportunities awaiting them in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Through this free program, students learn about the many options for careers, as well as address the national shortage in engineering, math and science fields.
The program is divided into two components - the online curriculum and the summer residency. Phase One, distance learning using a NASA-designed online curriculum, consists of ten lessons and a final project. To be considered for Phase Two, the summer residency, students are expected to meet deadlines and show mastery of the Phase One curriculum. The Museum of Flight hosts each weeklong summer residency experience during which students are guided by professional engineers and educators as they design a human mission to Mars. Summer residency participants are also visited by guest speakers, tour engineering facilities, and compete in hands-on engineering challenges.
We need your assistance. Please help spread the word about this program to homeschool students and families who you believe would be interested in and benefit from this program. Student participants must be high school juniors with at least a 3.0 GPA, at least 16 years of age, Washington State residents, and U.S. citizens. Encourage them to visit www.museumofflight.org/washingtonaerospacescholars for an application and more information. Student Applications are due by November 7, 2008. I have attached a student application.
Please feel free to contact me with any comments or questions.

Dear Homeschooling Family,
My husband and I have done some things in this life pretty well. One thing that will never make it on the short list of our accomplishments is investing. (I imagine if we had a long list of accomplishments, it wouldn't make it on that one either!) We're fine when it comes to saving money, but when it comes time to figuring out where to invest it, we go into "dual spousal brain-lock." I've noticed that choosing homeschool curriculum can have that same sort of affect on parents. The seemingly endless choices...the wildly varying educational philosophies....the competing and conflicting claims.... AND ALL THE PRETTY COLORS!! Its enough to make a parent cry (at least, it did me!)
How can you possibly choose? How can you buy the things that are truly important and still save money?
Good news! I'm going to help you cut through the confusion concerning curriculum. This month, I'm giving you 10 strategies for choosing high school curriculum that will really help - and save you money as well. In addition, I also have included coupons for ALL of my products this month. If you have "High School Help" on your curriculum list, you can really stretch your budget!
And if you have any ideas on how you are going to invest all of that money you save, just let me know!
Blessings,
Lee

10 No-Fail Strategies for Choosing High School Curriculum
Tovi was explaining to me her anxieties about high school. After seven successful years of homeschooling, high school was making her nervous. She sought help from a company with certified teachers and an accredited program. Instead of supporting her successful homeschool, they told her not to use the curriculum she had chosen.
Why?
Personal preference. Even though the curriculum was popular and successful among homeschool families, the teacher just didn't prefer it. It simply wasn't her cup of tea. Tovi left that meeting feeling more insecure and incapable. Fortunately, because she was a veteran homeschooler, she didn't stop there but continued to look for help that was a better fit for her family. That's how she found me.
"That one phrase on your website got me," she said. "I will not judge your homeschool or evaluate your children." That was how she ended up with me, talking about curriculum.
When you are starting high school and feeling a bit insecure, how do you go about choosing curriculum? Here are ten proven strategies to help you make successful curriculum decisions. Finally, if you're still stuck after all that, I'll share my personal "starting points" for choosing curriculum so you can see the things that I used.

Ambassadors for Excellence
by Matt Binz, Mr. HomeScholar
We just got back from a wonderful week in Hawaii. Lee and I "chaperoned" our son Alex so he could chair a session and present his research to the Western Economics Association International Conference (WEAI) at the Sheraton at Waikiki! Despite the fact that Alex has traveled alone before and is very comfortable in airports and hotels, we decided "No...This time he really needs an escort." It's tough duty but sometimes we just have to step up as parents....
This time we were smart, though. In the two previous years he presented to the WEAI, we have actually attended the conference. That was a huge mistake. Not only was it expensive, but neither Lee nor I understood what anyone was saying! This time we just stayed away and enjoyed the beach and the sun. We did, however, watch Alex give his presentation. This time he had prepared us weeks in advance on his topic, so by the time we got there we actually understood a little of what he was saying.
The presentation went very well, but the highlight for us came at the end when we overheard a conversation between Alex and one of the co-presenters.

Save Money On Curriculum
Save Money on Curriculum? How is that possible, when there is so much to buy? I'll admit, there are a million wonderful choices, but you can save money if you avoid the "grass is always greener" phenomenon, and just use what works. You don't have to get the newest to get the best. Try buying the best curriculum from 5 years ago - it can be a lot less expensive. Sometimes getting things on CD instead of DVD, or on cassette instead of CD can save a lot of money. When those older versions came out, they were the newest and best. They can still be a great curriculum choice! It's remarkably easy to save money on curriculum. Read my blog on this idea here: HomeScholar blog. You can subscribe to my blog and get tidbits of wisdom every day. Just click here: Subscribe to Daily Blog The HomeScholar Helper
Remember, when you need to save money
instead of searching for the
"latest-and-greatest"
look instead for the
"tried-and-true!"

Free Help is Available!
Did you know that this newsletter is only ONE of the free services I offer? Sure, this free email newsletter comes out on the first of every month, but more help is available!
I have free weekly "Office Hours." Once a week, I set aside a whole hour of my time to help you! I will provide a free 10 minute consultation once a week during that hour - and since I have a toll free number, even the phone call is free! This month my free "Office Hours" are Wednesdays 1:00-2:00 Pacific (2-3 Mountain, 3-4 Central, 4-5 Eastern.) My free hours are always posted on my website, in case you lose this email.
I also offer free daily blog support. If you have a question, you can send me an email with "Blog Question" in the subject line, and I'll answer your question on my blog. If you want, you can sign up to have my blog delivered to your email inbox. Then you don't even have to ask a question, but you can STILL get free support every day!
If free support isn't enough, I have low cost training courses on many high school issues, and we are making more courses available regularly. I can also meet with you over coffee at Starbucks, or on the phone if you can't travel to Seattle to meet me. I help homeschoolers Monday through Friday, 9:00-5:00pm.
Together, we can get things figured out. Don't be afraid! There is help available to you.

Totally Panicked?
I've been getting more and more phone calls from panicky parents. Some are just starting their high school journey. Others are on the other side, faced with college admission questions. If you are in a panicky place, there are three things I can do to help.
First, you can take a class!
It's easy to purchase some training courses so that you can quickly learn what you need to know to feel confident. All of these items are on sale this month, because I know this is the "panickiest" month of all! Read more
If your child is in grades 7-10
I recommend "Preparing to Homeschool High School." It's also a good choice if you have older children, but don't feel confident. Many people like to pair the video with my book, the "Sample Comprehensive Record" so that you can learn more about record keeping and course descriptions. "High School Testing" is a good fit as well.
If your child is in grades 10-12
This is the prime time for college planning, so I recommend "Finding a College" and "How to Get the Big Scholarship." It's a good idea to get "High School Testing" if you don't already know the differences between the SAT and ACT, or the two functions of the PSAT.

Second, you can meet me for coffee!
I can't always come to your house, but maybe you can meet me in Seattle! I'll be glad to meet you at a local Starbucks, and we can share a cozy cup of coffee, discussing your children, high school concerns, curriculum frustrations, and records. In three hours I can explain all about homeschooling high school, or all about how to get into college. It can really put your mind at ease. If you would like to make an appointment, please send me an email. I'm currently scheduling appointments about two months in advance. Read more.
Third, we can talk on the phone!
Sometimes just a one hour conversation can make a world of difference. If you want to talk to a homeschool veteran who will not judge your homeschool or evaluate your children, I would LOVE to talk with you on the phone! Please email me to make an appointment. I'll call you at the appointment time, and you can stay in cozy slippers and everything.

Please email me, and tell me your concerns. I'll be glad to address those issues in future editions of The HomeScholar Record.
Have a wonderful summer, and enjoy your children while they still live at home. My boys both have a full time job, and the house is strangely tidy. I would love to have the messy forts and water balloon fights again! I remember how much it bothered me at the time, but now I really miss it. Take some time to relax, so you can stop and smell the roses!
Blessings,
Lee

Homeschooling High School Seminar, Enumclaw, WA

Dear Homeschool Friends:
My next Homeschooling High School Seminar is scheduled. I'm pleased that this seminar is sponsored by my own homeschool support group: Homeschoolers' Support Association. All HSA members receive a $10.00 discount on registration. I'm excited also about yet more resources and options for homeschooling through the high school years. Would you please help me promote this class?
As always, let me know if you'd like to be removed from my private, homeschool, email list.

HOMESCHOOL ADVOCATE
Dino Rossi ~ Homeschool Father
When I spoke at the NW Catholic Conference, I was given the opportunity to introduce Dino Rossi and hear him speak. I didn't realize that he was a homeschooling parent! He cited the conflict over homeschooling in California, and vowed to protect our homeschool law. It's wonderful to have an outspoken advocate in the political arena, watching out for our rights!

WHO Convention
The Washington Homeschool Organization convention is next Friday and Saturday, June 13-14 in Puyallup. Members and their family get in free for one day. SENIORS! SUMMER SCHOOL WARNING!
Beware of Community College Courses This Summer!
If your child has been doing Running Start, then you need to be careful about summer. You probably already know that summer classes are not paid for by Running Start. You may not realize, though, that college classes can affect college application status!
Graduating seniors may need to avoid summer school! If your student takes even a one credit class after high school graduation, even during the summer, then they may not be considered a Freshman applicant. Their freshman scholarships may be withdrawn! I have known students that have had to change their college plans because of the financial impact of one college class taken for fun during the summer. Being punished for learning is a strange concept to a homeschooler! This usually will only affect graduating seniors. Contact your college to get more information, because policies vary.

WASHINGTON HOMESCHOOLER IN THE NEWS
Local Homeschooler in the National Spelling Bee!
The Seattle PI has an article called "Speller Zhang makes good run at Bee." I love the balanced view of education that the article demonstrates. It says, "Meg Zhang, Elizabeth's mother and an electrical engineer by training, said her real goal is "a balanced education" for her daughters, not a spelling bee crown. She said she has limited her daughter, who is a pianist and loves science and math, to studying spelling one hour a day." Said her father: "The goal for us is to prepare her for life."
