Thank Our Military: XEROX IS DOING SOMETHING COOL!! See Link
Thank you to my cousin, Sue, who sent this.
XEROX IS DOING SOMETHING COOL!!
If you go to this web site www.letssaythanks.com you can pick out a thank you card and
Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently
serving in Iraq . You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to a
member of the armed services. NOTE THAT A LOT OF THE WORLD IS TAKING ADVANTAGE
OF THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SAY THANK YOU SO IT’S A LITTLE SLOW SO I RECOMMEND
YOU DO IT FROM HOME.
How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!! It
is FREE and it only takes a second.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these?
Whether you are for or against the war, our soldiers over there need to know
we are behind them.
This takes just 10 seconds and it's a wonderful way to say thank you.
Please take the time and please take the time to pass it on for others to
do. We can never say enough thank you's.
Thanks for taking to time to support our military! |

Home School Fridays at YMCA Camp Seymour, Pierce/Kitsap County Areas
Home School Fridays at YMCA Camp Seymour
Winter / Spring 2010
Choose one day each month starting in January
Facilitated by professional Camp Seymour Naturalists
Classes:
Classes change each month, but always mix environmental education and outdoor recreation. Based on parent feedback, this year we are going to offer two dates each month...a Friday and a Monday. Please choose only one date to attend as we will do the same program for both days each month. There wasn’t a second open date in March or May on our calendar, so there is only one option in those months.
Program Goals and Philosophy:
This program is designed for a home-school student to meet the following goals: 1) develop relationships with other home-school students and camp staff, 2) have fun while experiencing hands-on environmental education taught by professional naturalists, and 3) learn outdoor and recreational skills in a safe setting. To meet these goals, we have a low student to staff ratio by limiting the number of participants to 30, have the same few naturalists lead every program, and encourage students to attend each month by varying the classes and having a whole lot of fun!
Spring Dates and Themes:
Jan 25th or 29th: Monster Day!
Squid & Sasquatch! We’ll focus on one real life monster and one mythical monster. In Camp’s famous Squid Dissection class, kids get to learn all about cephalopods through HANDS-ON investigation of wild caught squid. In our Sasquatch class, students will employ the scientific method to explore Sasquatch habitat and discover what Sasquatch would eat to survive. Maybe we’ll even see a Sasquatch in Camp’s old forest?
Feb 12th or 15th: Adventure Day!
Put on your adventure hats and get ready to tackle Camp Seymour’s 37 foot tall climbing wall! We’ll also take out our 16 passenger “Big Canoes” for a ride around Glen Cove and maybe even venture into Henderson Bay.
March 12: Wildlife Ecology!
Camp Naturalists will lead the students in several fun activities that involve ecological concepts like predator/prey relationships, food chains, skull identification and more!
April 19th or 23rd : Wilderness Day!
What would you do if you became lost in the wilderness? Students will learn about shelter building, fire building, the 10 essentials, edible plants, and the wilderness ethic. The plan is to spend the whole four hours in the undeveloped part of Camp Seymour. Students may even cook part of their lunch over an open fire. Take only pictures, leave only footprints!
May 14th: Recreation Day!
Waterfront, Archery, low tide beach walk, Marine Science Touch Tanks and Reptiles all will be open on this day. Go where you like!
Basic Schedule
9:45 -10:00 Arrive at Camp Seymour at the upper parking lot
10:15 Class 1 –
11:45 Lunch
12:45 Class 2 –
2:00 Head to the upper parking lot to be picked up.
We’ll see you next time!!!!!
We will accept the first 30 kids per session that sign up. The $20 daily fee includes program by two Camp Seymour Naturalists, program supplies and lunch. Please include an additional $4 for a limited YMCA membership, if not a YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties member. Pre-pay for the entire spring season and receive a 10% discount (no refunds). Parents can participate for free and eat lunch for $8.00. $3 per sibling discount. Five year olds and under with constant parental supervision are welcome for free and can eat lunch for $2.
Please call or e-mail Scott Gjertson, Outdoor and Environmental Education Director at YMCA Camp Seymour to register.

Camp Seymour YMCA Pierce and Kitsap Counties News, Dec. 2009
Hello Camp Seymour H.S. families!
Tomorrow is our last H.S. Friday of 2009. For the last two years, our December date had been cancelled because of snow! So I moved it from mid-December (when we have a greater chance of seeing spawning chum salmon and also a greater chance of snow) to December 4th (when it’s less likely we’ll see actual salmon spawning or snow). Nonetheless, our salmon class is fun and interactive and will go on tomorrow. Sarah and James will also teach our newly re-charged marine invertebrates class in our newly renovated marine science center. Be prepared to spend some, but not all of the day outside.
If you want to expand your day a bit and continue with the educational theme, we have a great local salmon hatchery. Look for the Minter Creek hatchery on the state website http://wdfw.wa.gov/hat/hat-main.htm
FYI: There is a school of 100 6th graders that has been at Camp Seymour since Tuesday. We’ll overlap lunch with them a bit. The H.S. lunch will start at 11:30 and the school’s lunch will start at 12:00. So about the time we’re wrapping up, the school will just be starting. It should work out ok, but we’d love your help if you can keep your kids at the tables until you’re whole family is ready to go outside…with 180 people in the dining hall it’s important to limit the traffic. We also will not be serving hot chocolate tomorrow. I know it’s become quite a H.S. tradition and something the kids look forward to, but we don’t allow the school kids to have it…so in the interest of not upsetting a lot of 6th graders who need fairness in their lives, we’re shutting down the hot coco tomorrow. If you’d like to bring your own hot coco packets and use our hot water, that’s fine. Please just make sure that it’s an adult getting the hot water not a child. Thanks for your understanding.
You only need to respond to this e-mail if you reserved a spot and can’t make it.
Finally, I have not set 2010 dates and themes yet. I would love to hear your feedback tomorrow. What do you want to see more of…less of? Any new activities / concepts you’d like us to cover?

Celebrate His Birth, A Nativity Ballet, Tacoma, WA
M E T R O P O L I T A N B A L L E T O F T A C O M A
5435 SOUTH TACOMA WAY TACOMA, WA 98409
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR DAMARIS CAUGHLAN
November 10, 2009
Greetings!
Please join us in inviting others to our free Nativity Ballet,
Celebrate His Birth, choreographed to tell of the Savior’s
birth. There will be three performances at Curtis High
School Theatre, December 5th at 2:00 p.m. and
8:00 p.m., and December 6th at 2:00 p.m.
MBT will gratefully accept good will donations for
theatre costs at the performances, but our true intention
s to gift others with this special performance. My hope
and desire is to not only have family and friends come
to see our dancers, but to use this ballet to reach out
to the community and touch those that do not
know the Lord.
Tickets are available now. We ask that you come to the
studio to get your tickets. If you have a large group of 20
or more, MBT will mail them to you.
My hopes for this year’s production of Celebrate His Birth
John 3:30 says, "He must increase, I must decrease."
This is a passage in the Bible where John the Baptist
was speaking of himself decreasing and Jesus increasing.
Disciples of John the Baptist were going over to Jesus and
they were jealous. John the Baptist knew his position and
that it was to be a light pointing to Christ.
Have you ever lost focus of what you were doing, or been
so focused on something else that your true aim gets lost?
My aim for Celebrate His Birth is that it is a ballet that brings
glory to God, and is done so with grace and humility.
Everyday, I should be remembering that I need God to
get me and MBT there. My hope is that this Nativity Ballet
helps others come to know God and hear of the Good News.
Please pray: that I and MBT are like a candle decreasing as
God's light increases, that my aim and focus stay true, and
that God will use the ballet in a powerful way.
Please pass this letter on to friends, family and church!
Sincerely,
Damaris Caughlan

Circle C Adventures, BOOKS TO GIVEAWAY
| |
|
NEWS FROM THE "RANCH" FOR NOVEMBER 2009:
From Susan Marlow, author of wholesome books for kids,
teacher and veteran homeschooling mom in
Washington State!
A giveaway for E-zine subscribers only!
HOWDY!
It's been three months and I’ve decided it’s time for another
giveaway. A Journey Through Learning sent me a number
of their fantastic lapbooks to use in a few “gift sets” of
Circle C Adventures books. I thought a drawing would be a
nice idea as we get closer to Christmas. And speaking of
Christmas, CBD offers a great deal on the set of four CCA books,
even better than what I can offer on my website.
If you’re interested, go here: CBD
Also, I just created a book trailer previewing
Book 5, Andrea Carter and the Trouble with Treasure.
The book is due to be released in February.
I’d love it if you took a peek at the trailer.
Just click here:
TROUBLE WITH TREASURE TRAILER.
|

OK, now on to the drawing! I have books and lapbooks available
for these three books:
Andrea Carter and the Long Ride Home
Andrea Carter and the Dangerous Decision
Andrea Carter and the Family Secret
(Sorry, I don’t have any lapbooks left
for Andrea Carter and the San Francisco Smugglers).
To enter the drawing, all you have to do is reply to this e-zine,
telling me which book/lapbook set you’d like to win.
I’ll draw the winning email “reply” next Friday, November 20th.
I will then contact the winner for their mailing address.
If you would like to know who won, you can email me for
the winner’s name after next Friday.
Good luck and hope to hear from you soon!

Discipling the Next Generation
by Jay and Heidi St. John
"A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher." Luke 6:10
People often ask us why we are so passionate about supporting homeschoolers. Our answer is simple: because today's parents are discipling the next generation. As we said last week, education is discipleship. It matters. God's word says that when students are through with their education, they will be like their teachers.
In a culture of moral relativism, homeschooling parents are making a difference. They are having an impact on the social and spiritual landscape of the next generation. It is our desire that pastors would seize this opportunity and support homeschooling parents. That's the heart behind the work we do at First Class Homeschool Ministries.
First Class is more than a wonderful, well-organized homeschool co-op program. It's not simply a "how-to" book on running a co-op or an amazing online database. It is a life-changing ministry that is helping churches offer real, tangible suppot tomhomeschooling parents as they train and nurture the next generation in the ways of the Lord.
These families are doing an amazing work. We hope you'll catch the vision, too, and join us in our our efforts to make ministry to homeschooling families a priority for churches everywhere.
Request an information pack from FCHM on how you can start or become an FCHM co-op by clicking this link.

Jay and Heidi St. John have six children who range in age from 4 to 18. Their desire to see churches reach out in support of homeschooling families prompted them to found First Class Homeschool Ministries. For more information on First Class or to contact the St. Johns, please send feel free to send them an email or call 360-326-8826.

2009 Benefit Answers Prayer
Struggling Economy Doesn't Matter to God!
As we planned this year's FCHM Benefit it was our prayer that the Lord would help us share our vision in a clear and direct way that people would understand.
The Lord answered the prayer that our vision would resonate with those in attendance, and approximately 50 families made pledge commitments totaling more than $2000 monthly. By working together for a common, God-inspired purpose those 50 families have made it possible for us to hire our first-ever FCHM employee.
Those who attended the Benefit met Nicole Swaim who is now working 25-hours a week in our US-Digital Outreach Center offices. We are so grateful to the Lord and to those who committed to make this milestone possible and we pray that the Lord will richly ble ss each family whose pledge helped answer our prayers.
Nicole's work is vital as she is the primary support for the dozens of FCHM volunteers.
Thank you for helping us support homeschooling families everywhere!

Which country has the world's largest Muslim population—Indonesia or Mexico?
If you have studied maps showing world religions, you will know the answer immediately. If you haven't, you might reason that Mexico was settled by the Spanish, followers of Christianity not Islam. Either way, you correctly answer Indonesia.
What is the term for a part of an ocean or sea that cuts far into the bordering landmass and may contain one or more bays?
From studying physical features on maps and using your geographical reference book to learn about physical features, you narrow your choices to two terms: bay and gulf. Since the word "bay" is used in the question, you eliminate it as a possibility and correctly answer gulf.
Which state has a climate suitable for growing citrus fruits—California or Maine?
You know that oranges and grapefruit are citrus fruits and that they grow in warm places. Since California's climate is definitely warmer and sunnier than Maine's, you correctly answer California.
To visit the ruins of Persepolis, an ancient ceremonial capital of Persia, you would have to travel to what present-day country?
From history books or from studying country profiles, you know that Persia is the former name of Iran, so you correctly answer Iran.
Looking for some fun ways to study? Check out this link from
National Geographic for all kinds of quizzes, games and great
geography facts!

Working on the Homeschool Assembly Line By: Steve Lambert - FCHM Board of Directors
On October 7, 1913 the world saw it's first-ever assembly line. Henry Ford envisioned a great new way to improve the efficiency of automobile manufacturing. But at what human cost?
Oh, the financial cost began to plummet of course, but the value of a human soul began to parallel that downward course. Up until this date, 96 years ago- automobiles were assembled the way you might bake a cake. One or two men bolted wheels on, installed the engine, added the body, connected the steering wheel, hooked up the lights, etc. When they were finished after several days, they stood back and admired their craftsmanship. And then they began the task all over again.
Ford changed all that and today an assembly line worker is the right-side tire man (or woman) installing two wheels and ten lug nuts every minute or two until they retire. Efficient? Yes. Mind-numbing? You'd better believe it!
Is your homeschool a craftsman's shop or an assembly line? Do you "build" each child uniquely, savoring the process of adding to their knowledge a little each day, working on every area using different tools and admiring the emerging young man or woman as they grow?
Or are you running an educational assembly line for maximum efficiency? Are you teaching every child in exactly the same way? Are you teaching every subject exactly the same way? Do both your math and your history lessons look identical: New concept on Monday, review on Wednesday and test on Friday? Have you become a specialist in just one style of teaching to the exclusion of the many other ways to teach successfully? At what price to your soul? And at what price to your childrens souls? There's an old saying I love: "If your only tool is a hammer, pretty soon everything begins looking like a nail." Do all of your children look like identical nails to you?
Variety, they say, is the spice of life. Doing something different is what makes the day worth getting up for. Mastering new skills and learning new techniques adds freshness to our schedule. Assembly lines slowly suck the Life out of us.
Near the very beginning in Genesis 1:26 the Bible tells us that the Lord had an idea: "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness..."
So what is the God like? He's creative and diverse beyond all imagining. When He set out to create beetles, he created more than 350,000 unique varieties. Wouldn't ONE kind of beetle have been enough? Wouldn't it have been far more efficient to make all beetles exactly the same? Wouldn't it have been efficient to create one star, or if you wanted several stars to have created them all identical; develop a pattern and then crank 'em out! But that's not God's way. Scientists estimate (guess?) there are between 100 billion and 1 trillion stars in most galaxies. Our galaxy has about 200 billion and is pretty average. And how many galaxies are there? The best scientific estimate is somewhere between 100 billion and one trillion. (That's a pretty wide range, by the way!) So do the math and you'll find that there are likely somewhere between ten sextillion and and one septillion stars in the universe. Let's don't even THINK about planets, moons, meteors, comets and the myriad of other sky objects. Let's look at those two numbers: 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 is 10 sextillion and 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 is 1 septillion IF I counted all the zeroes correctly.
And each one is unique. No two are alike. Every single one is different from all the others. If there are a septillion stars in God's universe He created every one of them individually- one by one, shaping and forming it with his Words and speaking each one into existence unlike any other star out there.
And the same is true for the 10,000 bird species, the 25,000 fish species and so forth. And within each species, no two fish are alike, no two birds are alike and no two beetles are alike- any more than any of the septillion stars is alike. God is an incomprehensibly diverse and creative God- and you were created in His image.
Why not take time this week to ask the Lord about ways to be more creative in your homeschooling; ways to enjoy more craftsmanship as you work with each child individually, approching each subject and each day with a freshness and a creativity that reflects the God who created you. And ask Him for ways to take the soul-numbing assembly line out of homeschooling for both you and your children.
Married for more than 38 years and in full-time ministry for more than 25 years, Steve and his wife Jane began homeschooling in 1982. Together they publish the award-winning homeschool curriculum "Five in a Row", (written by Jane) while maintaining a busy website, speaking, doing marriage retreats, mentoring other national homeschool leaders and enjoying their five amazing grandchildren. Steve and Jane currently serve on the Board of Directors for First Class Homeschool Ministries.

TACOMA PUBLIC LIBRARY HelpNow Homework Tutoring Information
Tacoma Public Library helps Tacoma students excel with free online homework help and tutoring.
Your tenth-grader has questions about exponential decay functions for his Algebra class. It's been many years since you even thought about Algebra, let alone use it. Where can your child go for help? Online, to www.tacomapublioclibrart.org and HelpNow - a free live homework and tutoring service recently launched by the Tacoma Public Library's
Tacoma Public Library's new HelpNow (Homework Tutoring) program enables the library system to provide live online homework assistance in a broad range of subjects in English and Spanish for students in grades 3 through 12, free of charge (all one needs is a Tacoma Public Library card).
This tutoring program is an Internet-based service that provides library patrons with live, on-demand homework help, seven days a week, from 3:00 to 11:00 pm. Certified tutors are experienced in Math, Science, Social Studies, and English/Language Arts. If live, real-time assistance is not needed, students may also submit questions any time of the day or night, and emailed responses will arrive within 24 hours.
Math tutors assist with basic skills, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus, while Science tutors are versed in biology, chemistry, physics, and earth-science subjects.
Social Studies tutors cover American history, world history, and political science. English/Language arts instructors provide help with writing, reading comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary skills, as well as help in English literature.
Tutors are also able to assist with Advanced Placement (AP) subjects and introductory college courses The program includes a 24-hour writing lab, which allows students to submit papers to trained writing instructors online at any time; students receive feedback within 24 hours.
Writing experts evaluate the submitted paper and provide constructive comments with the aim of helping students become better writers.
Besides homework help, the homework tutoring program offers a Skills Building section in which students may receive additional exercises to help them master the concepts being taught in their homework lessons. Skills-building lessons involve one-to-one sessions with live instructors. These tutors utilize a library of field-tested, state-aligned lessons, including age-appropriate content, reading passages, simulated test questions, and worksheets to help students master key academic areas.
All tutors are required to have a four-year college degree, and undergo extensive background and reference checks. They are also subject to a rigorous selection and training process, multiple screening interviews, and skills testing. Ongoing monitoring of online sessions ensures security and instructional quality.
In addition to HelpNow, students can also access an array of testing and education resources through the Library's online Testing and Education Reference Center.
Students taking a college entrance exam (like the SAT) or licensing exam, searching for a college or grad school, or financial aid can find free online help through the new resource center database. Students can take online practice tests and download and review test prep eBooks to further their education goals. The online resource center provides students and adult learners with the tools they need to take their studying and careers to the next level. With the Testing & Education Reference Center, library patrons have access to one online education resource to help them make informed decisions about their future. There are also Career Tools including Career Assessments, a Resume Builder, and Careers Library
Students may access these new library resources from any computer – whether at home, school, or at the library – by going to the library’s website at www.tacomapubliclibrary.org.

"The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you thought special and particular to you.
