Teaching Common Courtesy
|
Jan. 7, 2009
|
Dear Friends,
I promise that I'm not going to launch into a Miss Manners etiquette speech today. I'm not going to give instructions on how to hold a fork or pour tea. But when it comes to common courtesy, I think it's important to spend some time teaching our children how to treat others.
John 13:35 says, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."
While I think it's great that statistics show that homeschoolers are outperforming public school students on standardized tests, as a Christian mom, I'm most concerned that my children know the Lord and learn how to love others and put them first.
Just remembering the letters in joy can help.
Jesus first.
Others.
You.
Having common courtesy for others, serving others, loving people, showing people that you care about them (even when they don't deserve it) is how our children can reach others for Christ.
Take some time to talk to your child about how we should treat others and why it's so important. Putting others first doesn't come naturally, but you'll have plenty of opportunities to practice it in your home everyday. Just don't get discouraged. Those times when your child is acting selfish and inconsiderate are just opportunities for you to get to the heart of the matter like only a parent can.
Enjoy every minute!

THM Editor
PS - I have really enjoyed reading some of your favorite quotes that you all have been sending us. Be sure to read the ones at the bottom today. They go along with today's topic VERY nicely.

Mercy Every Minute
Deborah Wuehler, TOS Senior Editor
Everything in life eventually boils down to two main things: loving God and loving each other. On these two things hang all the law and the prophets and common Christian courtesy. Here are three ways to teach your children how to show courtesy and be like Christ at the same time:
1. Keep Your Promises
Ecclesiastes 5: 4, 5 "When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed."
Hebrews 10:23, 24 "Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works"
2 Corinthians 1:20 "For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us."
Do what you say you will do. Keeping promises shows common courtesy.
2. Be Kind (Merciful, Good, Longsuffering, Gracious)
Exodus 34:6 "And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth"
Ephesians 4:32 "And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."
2 Corinthians 6:4-6 "But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God. . .By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned. . ."
Kindness is the basic ingredient for common courtesy.
3. Be a Servant (Helper)
Galatians 5:13, 14 ". . .by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. . ."
Psalm 100:2 "Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing."
1 Peter 4:7-10 "But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. Use hospitality one to another without grudging. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God."
Look for a need and meet it. Common Christian courtesy starts here.
Thank you for your faithfulness and kindness!

For the month of January
The Light Across the River
The Light Across the River is a historical fiction sequel to Across the Wide River, but also a stand-alone book, about real places, events, and characters in the mid 1800's. The book uses the Underground Railroad as a backdrop for the story of 11-year-old Johnny Rankin, one of 13 children, and his drive to overcome personal shortcomings and prove his maturity to his father. He dreams of earning his father's trust enough to become a conductor on the Underground Railroad and help in his family's important work of leading slaves to freedom. But have his inadequacies endangered those he loves most?
As the story unfolds, the chapters alternate between the perspectives of Johnny from ages 11 to 15, and Eliza, the slave matriarch whose family he helps to free.
This book rises far above others in its genre. In the historical note, author Stephanie Reed shares her knowledge of the Rankin family gained through the study of journals and other first-hand accounts. (. . .)
Faith in Jesus is a common element among the main characters, both slave and free. "Coincidences" and grace that could only be orchestrated by God fill the pages of The Light Across the River. Johnny's father is not only an active abolitionist but also the town preacher.

Schoolhouse Spotlight
Angela Quigley, Director of the Schoolhouse Store
Teaching our children how to be courteous and appreciative of others is something that will reflect on their lives forever. We all know how important it is to begin teaching these lessons while our children are still at an impressionable age.
The Schoolhouse Store offers some very inspiring products that can help to teach your children discernment and how to be courteous and respectful of others.
Here is just a small handful of what we carry:
This 61 minute CD offers delightful singing through key points in the gospel of Matthew.
Parents will appreciate the warm emphasis on human relationships which is found in Matthew, like sharing (5 loaves and 2 fishes), forgiveness (10 times 7), faithfulness and kindness.
Listen to the song samples and also save when you buy both Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 together.
Sammy the squirrel has just found the largest acorn ever. . .and he doesn't want to share it. On his quest to hide the acorn he meets a few of God's incredible creatures. Each one seems to have a special gift and soon Sammy learns that he too has gifts. Travel with Sammy as he discovers the gift of sharing.
This 48 page E-Book is brimming over with practical ideas and inspiration for parents who want to raise children of good character.
Here's what this E-Book will reveal:
* Whining
* Specific How-Tos
* What is a Family
* Building Character
* Diligence
This two-book set from the WisdomKids copywork program includes Thanks and Giving and The ABC's of Being Thankful.
At last, a Scripture learning program that teaches your children how Scripture applies to their lives NOW! Oftentimes, children can't tell you what verses mean in their personal walk; they merely recite them from memory. It's time our children not only have God's word stored in their minds, but also in their hearts! Using the copywork method, your child will learn, verse by verse, how Scripture relates to them NOW, not just when they "get big."
Be sure to stop in and check the Schoolhouse Store for the many items that apply to all of the age groups that you may be teaching.
Remember, there's ALWAYS Free Shipping at the Schoolhouse Store!

E-Book: What Every High Schooler Should Know About Credit and Finance
Why did we publish What Every High Schooler Should Know about Credit and Finance? Because the reality is that many subjects covered in this book are simply not taught to young people. Many people don't know the important and, in some cases, hidden and nearly secret information about the way financial things really work in American society.
What Every High Schooler Should Know about Credit and Finance also focuses on how to get out of trouble if you find yourself facing an uncertain financial future. But, the main point of the E-Book is to help keep you out of trouble in the first place.

The Familyman
Todd Wilson, Familyman Ministries
Before I spout off all my vast wisdom concerning common courtesy, let me just remind you that I AM A MAN, and everyone knows that men have a different approach regarding acceptable behavior among people.
Let me begin by just asking the question, whose idea was the "thank you" note anyway? Obviously, it wasn't a man's. It just doesn't make sense to me. On Christmas morning, if someone gives you a tie shaped like a fish, you open it, and then turn to the person who gave it to you and say, "Thank you."
That's it. Then along came some sadistic woman who decided that it wasn't enough to offer a verbal "thank you," but that you also needed to send a written "thank you."
Ever since then, women have been living under the burden of having to write thank you notes. Why, I even know people who hate having babies or getting Christmas and birthday gifts, just because it means they have to add writing thank you notes to an already impossible schedule.
So, here's my advice for the New Year. . .quit writing and expecting thank-you notes. The next gift you give, kindly inform the recipient that you don't want them to write you a thank you note. . .and mean it. That's almost a better gift than the actual gift.
And the next gift you receive, tell the giver, "Thank you so much for the gift. I really love it. . .but I won't be sending you a thank you note. . .Todd told me not to."
My wife began doing this a while ago and people love the freedom it gives. In fact, if we all do this, we can right this terrible wrong and once again begin to enjoy the giving. . .and the receiving.
Besides that, about the only other common courtesies I can offer are:
- Don't spit at the table, into the wind, or in public buildings.
- If you must belch at the table, the acceptable comment afterwards would be, "Let me see you top that!"
- Don't eat soup and whistle at the same time.
My only other advice for 2009 is to. . .
Be Real,
Todd
PS - Because someone asked, we're offering a limited number of 2008's advent crafts at 50% off. So if you didn't buy our advent crafts this year, you can save a small bundle if you plan a little ahead for next year.

Weekly Language Tip
Ruth Beechick, Curriculum Specialist
You carefully teach your children to place a comma before the state name when they address an envelope. Now use that moment to explain that in sentences the state must be set off with commas both before and after. The same for a country when it follows a city name. Examples: Golden, Colorado, is where I live. In London, England, we saw Buckingham Palace.
This use of commas works like parentheses, setting off the parenthetical words. That is, you could skip reading the parenthetical part and the sentence still makes sense.
Many people make this comma mistake because they learn well what to do on an envelope, so they do the same thing in sentences. It doesn't take a long grammar lesson to teach this, usually one explanation will do.

Homeschool Freebies
Molly Green, Econobuster
Well, even if Todd isn't a fan of thank you cards, I have found a hodge podge of websites this week with different ways to help teach your children to behave and have the most wonderful attitude.
Donnayoung.org has a wonderful copywork notebook available. George Washington's Rules of Decent Behavior is filled with many of the rules that our first president had to follow, and they helped him to become a better person in the process.
Activity Village has some printable thank you cards that you can use to teach your child how to write a thank you note for a gift received or just to say thanks for a kind gesture.
Here is a printable award from Rudebusters.com that you can print out and present to your child when you catch them in the act of using their manners!
Remember that your children learn manners best when they see them being used by you! Have a great week friends!
Enjoy those freebies,
Molly
