Dec. 6, 2008 - I am seeing some fruit
Okay so I am seeing the fruits of my labor. The children are fairing very well with the self-teaching. We have a long way to go, however I am seeing some improvement.
I need to get my consistency with their discipline up. Compared to the "world" I am good but when you hold yourself up against the ultimate scale (Jesus) you will always have a long way to go.
God is not through with me yet!

Oct. 13, 2008 - SELF-TEACHING
So I have returned to my ideas of when I was first given the privilege to home school. What were those ideas? School is a building you receive an education at that building. So if you have the same or better books that those who work in the school have why can’t you teach your own children? Or better yet teach them to teach themselves. So when people say they home school it gives the connotation that they have brought the school to their home. This I don’t want to do at all. If I wanted my children in school I would put them in there. Children were supposed to originally get an education in school. Now all of a sudden it is necessary for children to not only get an education from school but “socialization” as well. I am sorry I don’t buy into that. I won’t get on my soapbox today, that is a post for another day.
So now I try and not say home school. Home education to me is a better word for what it is that our family does. Our children are educated at home.
Now since they are educated at home it has been decided to teach them to teach themselves. I truly believe that teaching your children to teach themselves is the best thing you could ever do for them. Teaching them not to always sit and listen to spoon fed information. This is good for their education but also in seeking God. How many times have we heard or seen, and I am guilty of this myself, of someone regurgitating what they heard their Pastor or Elder say. They don’t look it up in the bible or do any study on it. The same is for education. The teacher says
So from all of this I have started teaching the children to teach themselves. We have just started so this is the “hard” part, but I have seen some fruits. To get started I didn’t want to buy new materials so I had to use what I have and convert it the best I could.
For D – (My nine year old) she needed and still needs some help with her comprehension skills. I had bought Christian Light Reading 100 for her to improve her comprehension skills. So she does this by herself and I correct it. At first she wasn’t doing so well but now she is only (if any) getting 1 or 2 wrong. She is in Math U See Beta and she does that on her on. I just print out her test and give her extra practice sheets if she needs it.
For History, we use The Story of the World. This was the hardest thing that I had to convert to self-teaching. But what I did was took the activity book and copied the pages for the chapter in OCR format. Then I can take off everything but the review questions. They listen or read the history book and then answer the questions. This part I was really worried about. Since D’ does not comprehend so well I thought this might be a problem. Surprising to me it was not. She listens to the history book on the CD and reads along. She has been doing a great job with the questions. They also do some of the activities and art projects that go along with the chapter.
D’ is not doing science right now because I thought it would be too much for her. I figured practicing with the Christian Light and her history would be enough for her right now.
As far as writing practice, I bought a cursive writing book from the BX and she does pages in that everyday.
She also has a silent reading book. Right now it is Misty of Chincoteaque. She has that on CD and reads along with the book. I believe that is it for her. Things are going good she is almost done with the Christian Light book. I have ordered the
For P’ – (My almost 8 year old) He was a little bit easier with his studies. For Science he does Alpha Omega Life Pac 3, which he can do by himself. I just check off for the teacher checks.
For Math he is also in Beta Math U See but he just started.
For History he is doing the same as D’
For writing he is doing a Zaner-bloser writing book. He is learning how to write cursive.
For reading right now he just reads literature books. So far he has read, from the top of my head, Dr. Mr. Henshaw, Mr. Poppers Penguins, James and the Giant Peach, The Great Brain, Oliver Twist (the kids version), and now he is reading Call of the Wild.
It looks to be going pretty well. My plan (prayfully) is that by September D’ will be on reading level (or at least closer than now) and I will probably buy either, Alpha Omega, ACES, Christian Light, or Rod and Staff for their English (
They will continue on with their Math U See as well as The Story of The World.
This is all God willing and their skills willing.
Anyway keep me in your prayers.

Oct. 12, 2008 - Self-Teaching is going strong
Okay so I was too harsh on Charlotte Mason. I did not sack her totally but I put her up on the shelf for a while. This is our third week in using a semi self-teaching method and it is going great. The kids love it and so do I. i have even seen some improvements in D's comprehension skills. I think that is the Christian Light working. Praise God!
I will write more on what I am using for each child and how I am doing it later.
Now I just need to put more spiritual growth in The Spiritual Growth Academy and I will be set.

Sep. 24, 2008 - Charlotte Mason has been sacked
Okay so charlotte mason has been sacked.
We have started our new school year. Actually we started Sept 4th. Things are going okay. I have had one revelation and that is Charlote Mason has been sacked. Not that I think anything is wrong with her ideas or ways or whatever, but, it is just not for me (us.) I am going back to my first idea when we began this homeschool jouney 1 and 1/2 years ago. Self-teaching. Teaching my children to teach themselves. That has always been my home education philosophy. It just makes sense to me. They spoon feed the children at school so why do that at home. I am looking into the robinson curriclum, although from what I have researched I don't need it. I have the self-teaching manual but it leaves so much for interpretation. Which I suppose is good but sometimes it can be bad if you don't know where to start. If anyone that reads this. (All 2 of ya'll) are self-teaching or have any advice or info on that, please let me know.

Sep. 5, 2008 - Still trying to refocus
We have not started back school yet or really started a true new school year. My plan is to start Monday but I don't know. I want to have us totally focused on God and things just don't seem to be that way. Something is getting in the way. It is really hard trying to juggle the things of God and the things of the world. Keep praying for us please.

Aug. 5, 2008 - My journey is yet over
My journey is yet over. I am still working on things. I am trying to refocus. I keep focusing on secular education and my focus should be God and His word and teaching my children the same. We had started a new school year in June but I decided that it was time to stop and really refocus. I don't what has gone on with me but even chores around here have lacked. They have not done consistent chores in a month. I am just falling. I still have not listened to the lie the devil tells us homeschooler that we need to put the children back in school. I rebuke him every time. But I know I need to do better. I can do it all (there is actually not that much to do) but I need to prioriize what is important. I am really trying to put my faith in God and let him take care of the rest. Those prayer warriors out there just lift me up. I will keep you all posted. My post will be sporadic since after my sabbatical from the computer I am still trying to keep computer time down to a minimum, especially when school is back in session.
Be blessed and encouraged.

Jul. 16, 2008 - Out of touch for a while
I will not be blogging for a little while. I have fought with this and fought with this and now God has won. I am going unplugged for a little while. There are alot of things in my life that are not how they should be and honestly I believe part of it is because of my computer use. I don't watch much tv, I don't have a countless amount of friends that are at the house all the time, I don't do a whole lot of shopping, but I do love my internet. This has gotten in my way of seeking God and completing my duties at home. So I have decieded, after months of trying to get around it, that I would just go unplugged. It is going to be hard, especially with me living here in Japan. My main communication source is the computer. I use it to call everyone back home. They use it to call and email me.
If you haven't noticed I am slowly trying to talk myself out of it. I have to ask myself what is more important. Where do my priorties lie. God first, hubby second, children 3rd, others 4th and myself last. That means all of my entertainment and hobbies must come after I have taking care of everyone else.
Okay I have stalled long enough. I don't how long I will be unplugged. I will talk to you when my journey is over.
Be blessed and encouraged,
Maisha

Jul. 9, 2008 - Our first Vacation of 08-09
This week (July 7-July 11) has been our first vacation of the school year. We did about five weeks of school and then, since hubby took leave, I went ahead and put us on vacation. I don't have the pic's to upload just yet but we went a few places.
Monday we tried to go to Miss Veedol beach but the tide was too high. We then tried to go to beach on base but before we got there it started raining. We then tried to go swimming at the onbase (indoor) pool but that did not open until 1pm (it was 1030) so we just called it bust and went home.
Tuesday we took a chance on the weather and went to find this place called Towada horse park. It took us awhile but we found it with the help of a very helpful Japanese man. He spoke a little english. I spoke a little Japanese. We worked it out :-) The horse park was great. We all got on horses and the lady walked us around the coral or whatever it is you call it. We all went down this roller slide that was huge. Then the kids played on this massive playground for awhile. We ended the day with pizza hut for lunch at the base food court. I will try and learn how to upload pictures so all can see. They also had this huge trojan horse slide there. The kids got on it. I did not
Wednesday we woke up early and took the children to the beach on base. Hubby had been telling 'J' that he was going to take her to the beach so he wanted to make good on that. The kids had fun. I was surprised the 'J' got into the water. We had to stop her from going out too far. She wanted to follow behind "D' and "P". After the beach we came home and put "J" down for her nap and I started to take down "D's" hair. It is in braids and it is time to redo it. In the afternoon we went to our homeschool groups bbq. That was fun. After that we met hubby at church for bible study.
Today is Thursday and I think we are going to take it easy. The kids have a birthday party to go to later but besides that I think we are going to stay in the house. Hopefully tomorrow me and hubby will have a chance to go to lunch together without the children and maybe some shopping. Saturday, if the weather is clear, we are prayfully going to take the 2 1/2 to 3 hour ride to the zoo.
It is a very busy week. We all enjoy hubby being home for awhile. We also enjoy being able to share the sights and adventures in Japan with him. The kids and I usually discover Japan on our own when hubby is at work. This week we were able to have him with us. Again I will upload the pictures in a few days, hopefully with pics from the Morioka zoo. I will also in the next week write more about our time here in Japan and expain where all these places are that I speak of.
I will write again soon, IGWI (If God Wills It)
I pray you all are blessed and encouraged.
P.S. I was going through my previous blog entrees and noticed my inconsistency in the names of my kiddos. I call them so many things (all good most of the time, LOL) but for the purposes of this blog "D" is my oldest daughter, "P" is my son and "J" is my baby girl. I'll try and remember to keep that straight

Jul. 1, 2008 - Still Going
Some things going on right now in my household.
#1, My almost 3 year old, we will call her 'J' , has a 10 yen (the size of a quarter) coin stuck in her stomach. It has been in there for almost two weeks now. It is supposed to be in her (for lack of a better word and because I am truly juvenile at times) "poop shoot". These are actually the words the doctor used. But it hasn't came out yet. She is not sick or anything so there really is no worry. It's just crazy.
#2, My ongoing struggle against the spirit of idleness. Actually not idleness but true laziness. Not wanting to do the chores in the house. The Lord is working with me on that and I am trying to exhibit more self-control.
#3, The struggle between myself and my eldest daughter, we will call her 'D' on our relationship.
#4, Just trying to keep up and be consistent with the childrens schoolwork. Not just going on a schedule but making sure they are truly learning something.
These are my struggles and happenings that I am consistently praying for and trying to overcome or solve.
Blessings to all, may you overcome your struggles with the help of the Lord.

Jun. 29, 2008 - Back Again
So it has been a while but I am back., trying this blog thing out once again. I thought I had deleted this thing but I guess not.
Well whats been going on. Well after changing curriculums a couple times. We have rediscovered classical, charlotte Mason methods and there forms of curriculum. We have already started the 2008-2009 school year.
What we are using:
first language lessons of the well-trained mind (2 and 3)
Mathusee, Alpha (as a quick review, up to speed for both the oldest children)
Spelling Power (new discovery and I love it!)
Story of the World 3 (haven't started using it yet but will start after our first week vacation on the 15th)
Mastory Theory (love this book I am learning and so are the children)
Prima Latina Latin (haven't got that yet still waiting for it to come in the mail)
Apologia Zoology 1 ( Haven't started that yet, I am still trying to get over my fear of science)
Lots of literature books. ( right now we are reading The secret Garden, I believe the next book will be Don Quixote, I think I spelled that wrong, it goes good with the first chapters in SOTW.
Well I am going to soon visit all the blogs I have in my friends list. Please keep my family in your prayers for strength and guidance from the Lord

Nov. 5, 2007 - My week this week
Well this week is proving to be a busy week. Yesterday I had to get a sick call appointment for my daughter at the dentist. She has a tooth coming in but the other tooth hasn't fallen out yet. She is fine. The dentist said that the tooth that is in there should be falling out sometime soon and it should be okay. I also had a womens bible study last night so I had to go over that. This on top of homeschooling and chores and playing outside and finding a new shelf for my daughters room so we can put her homeschool stuff in there.
Today we have homeschool, I need to finish alot of laundry and the kids have their sports banquet tonight. (Football for the boy and Cheerleading for the girl) I despise these things. It is usually a bunch of kids running around acting crazy and their parents acting likethey don't see them. But it is for the kids so I do what need to do.
Wednesday, I have homeschool for my oldest daughter but my DH is taking my husband to the dentist. Poor baby has to get his tooth pulled. His right (I think or left) top middle tooth has not came out yet and the other one has. So the dentist is going to pull it because it is stopping the other tooth from coming in there. My poor baby. So I will be taking care of him when his dad drops him back at home. He is a big baby so I will have to nurse him as well as deal with my two year old who can get quite jealous.
Thursday, is my son's birthday. Yeah why get his tooth pulled the day before his birthday. They wanted to do it on his birthday. So this is an improvement. We will do light homeschooling and I will probably take the kids somewhere fun to play. I am going to make a cake and when my husband gets home we wil open presents.
Friday, homeschooling as usual...lots of cleaning and I have a baby shower to go to in the evening.
You know after I write it all down it doesn't look like alot but usually this little bit will turn into alot.
So that is all for now.

Oct. 21, 2007 - Children steal your brain cells
Okay so I am always thinking about things to write about in this blog and so that is why there are two post. I had a story pop in my head that I thought I would share.
Saturday morning I woke up and was about to make some bacon for my husband to go with some leftover banana pancakes. Well the bacon was frozen so I couldn't. Now every Sunday in our house we have muffins, fruit, and bacon. So why when on Saturday when I had noticed I hadn't taken out the bacon I didn't take it out for Sunday?
The children have stolen my brain cells.
So Sunday when I got up to cook breakfast I had to but the bacon in some water. Thank goodness it is turkey bacon and it thaws pretty quickly. Problem solved. That one anyway. I was making muffins, I usually make two batches, and I forgot to put the second bach in the oven. They were sitting on the stove for like 20 minutes. My hubby goes in the kitchen and asks if there is anything in the oven. I tell him yea. He, being the logical man that he is, looks in the oven. "Baby," he says. "Theres nothing in the oven." I get up and the muffins are sitting right there on the stove. I had even set the timer on the oven to know when they were going to be done. Needless to say we were a few minutes late for church. What happened? Again I am blaming it on the children. Everyone you have takes 5 years from your brain cells. I have 3 you do the math.

Oct. 21, 2007 - Random Ramblings
So as all homeschoolers know life is busy. I am trying to post more but there are only 24 hours in a day and I'd like to sleep during some of them. Today I decided to post some of my random ramblings. These are things that are in my head or i have talked about with others.
Halloween - So theres this thing called halloween. I am sure many of you have heard of it. It is when children (sometimes adults) dress up as something that they are not and go door to door begging for candy. Why???? In my opionion complete waste of time. Not to mention as a Christian I don't feel this is a celebration that God would actually be happy with. The crazy thing is when we decided not to participate in halloween so many people acted as if we were abusing our children. These were Christian people, I was shocked. Am I saying you are not a Christian if you do celebrate halloween...definitely not. That is your choice and that is between you and God. I am not going to look down on you because you do so please don't look down on me because I don't.
Trading Spouses - So me and my husband like to watch reality tv. Not the crazy reality tv (although we used to) but nanny 911, trading spouses. These things are ridiculous but I have learned some things from these shows (what to do and what not to do). Well we were watching it last night and on there was a lady who was a Christian she swapped houses with a lady who was a tatoo artist and who's husband was a body piercer. This is the normal scheme of things on trading spoiuses but what made me hot as fire was the Christian lady. She was a hot mess. She was trying to witness to the husband and she was so mean and accusing and judgemental. Then that lady who she swapped places with was getting the same thing from the Christian ladies mother who kept telling the lady that she was going to hell. Okay the last time I checked no one but God himself has a heaven or hell to put anyone in so how are you going to tell that lady she is going to hell. That witness has fell on deaf ears. They refused to dust the sand off and go on when their witnessing was not accepted and it just killed any seed that possible could have been planted. I was annoyed.
Homeschooling - Now I get flack from so many people because of my families choice to homeschool. I understand and that is fine that is their opinion but when you have no children no educational degrees, I just don't need your opinion on the subject. Especially when you are trying to convince me not to homeschool. Again I was annoyed.
Well we had a week off last week because my hubby took leave and we wanted to spend some quality time with him. So today is our first day back after a weeks vacation. Whats on the agenda this week:
Bible - I have no idea. I have nothing planned out. I'll just let God lead me in that
But we are working on memorizing John 3:16 ( Which I believe they already have memorized but I decided to do it again)
Math - same ole same ole, going through lesson by lesson
History - we are studing Pilgrims, Puritans, Indians and the Mayflower
Writing - Simple writing practice
Science - We are finally going to start our Apologia Science book.
English - Still Abeka, going through the special sounds and spelling rules to get the kids back up to speed since they missed alot of that last year in public school
Jasmin - Still working on letters, numbers, shapes and colors
Elective - We are going to start piano lessons from "John Thompsons's Teaching Little Fingers to Play." I am teaching them and I don't know how to play that good myself, so we are going to learn together.
P.E. - Nothing formal I am just going to try and get them some form of exercise each day. Maybe we will go to the pool one day this week. (It is 40 degrees outside but the pool is indoor and heated)
Training - I need to work on the older two talking back, i.e "Princess" go do the dishes".....Mommy I have to do something else or Mommy can I...The proper response is Yes Ma'am. The little one I need to work on church training. she has been acting a horrible mess in church lately so I need to have her sit down 15 minutes each day quietly with no toys and play a sermon off of a website or something and correct her.
Well that is my week I pray ya'll will be blessed through out this week and this day. If the Lord says the same I will write again soon.

Oct. 7, 2007 - Columbus day / My Office Hours
So school is going pretty good. I am still getting tripped up on Social Studies and Science right now, but I have assured myself that as long as I am doing Devotion/Bible, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic the rest will fall into place.
Today is Columbus day and the children have been inquiring about it. I have chosen to tell them the truth and nothing but the truth. This has been my policy since they were born. No Santa, no easter bunny, no tooth fairy. Not only for the spiritual reasons but because it is just plain lying. So when it comes to Columbus I must tell the children the truth or what I know to be the truth. Columbus did not discover America. He didn't discover anything at all really, he was just a really good PR (Public Relations) man. He didn't even think he discovered America he thought he discovered something else.
So when the children ask why does this man have a holiday? I must tell them, "because he performed wonderful public relations."
My office hours
So I have one of those children that constantly talks. I know none of you know what I am talking about.
But in my world I am bombarded with constant talk about absolutely nothing and questions that have no relevance to anything whatsoever. I know this is a kid thng and that is what they do but, as many homeschoolers can attest to, when you spend all day around the under 10 circuit sometimes you need a small break to rejuvinate. Thus comes my office hours. I have implemented this in my house with my children (or atleast my oldest two, the 2 year old doesn't get it just yet) My office hours are from 6am to 6pm. Now I know some of you supermoms out there are gasping at me and just feel I am too horrible to be a homeschool mom. Maybe, but it works.
How it works. From 6am to 6pm all systems are go. Any question any conversation, Whatever your fancy lets talk about it. Once the music plays at six 'o'clock (I live in Japan so music actually plays at 6am, 12pm, and 6pm long story I talk about on another entry) Any questions that are not pertinent to the mission of this family must be written down to be discussed when "The Office of Mom" reopens bright and early at 6 am. Does this mean I don't talk to my children after 6pm...NO but it does mean questions like
"Hey ma, if you lived in Africa and you were purple and the world was flat and a bird with no head flew from the sky and pooped on you would you feel it or would yoube camoflauged because you decided to pick up a camelian and hold it." (an exaggeration but close to the questions I am asked on a daily basis)
Funny story:
The other night we had one of the girls from the church babysit. They were all sitting here talking to the babysitter and my son was , as usually, contantaly talking. My oldest daughter says to my son "Your taling too much." My son then pauses, thinks and asks the babysitter, "What are your office hours."
She asked me about it when I got home. She did not understand what my poor son was talking about. We had a laugh about it when I explaned it to her.

Sep. 24, 2007 - Sick and homeschooling
I am currently getting over a death of a cold. (one of my many sayings that do not make sense. It just means a really bad cold) My throat is still on fire but I don't feel like I am going to pass out anymore, which is good.
Yesterday I laid in bed all day. My DD (8) really stepped up..she made everyone lunch and kept my two year old from eating, cutting or killing anything. Maybe I actually did something right and taught the child something. I am so proud of her.
As far as school went yesterday I came them some worksheets for each subject and then was a bad mom cause they watched movies most of the day. I feel guilty but if I would not have rested the day I would have ended up being sick all week. Such is life

Sep. 16, 2007 - 2nd Week of school
Well we survived the second week of school. (No I am not going to say that every week
We did every subject (except Science - still haven't gotten the book yet) everyday except for Friday. We didn't have school on Friday because I am trying to set up the lesson plans to have test on certain days so I needed to skip a day of school to put us on track. I have done surprisingly well with keeping our schedule and doing what we are supposed to do.
What I am having problems with...chores.
I am trying to make sure all my chores get done but I seem to be more tired than normal. My DH says it is from doing a routine everyday. So hopefully I will get used to it.
Be Blessed

Sep. 11, 2007 - Light of the World
So we our halfway through our second week of school. God is good! Things are going well. I thought I would need to make myself accountable to someone to make sure my slothfulness did not get in the way of teaching the children but it does not seem to be that way. I have not felt like I didn't want to teach them. I actually enjoy teaching them.
"Socialization".....I went to our bases homeschool group's first meeting of the school year last night. It was a meet and greet type thing. It was nice but there was only maybe 5 or 6 families there. I know from the yahoo group there are atleast 50 families, so where are they? I want my children to have friends but the kids that live around us are really, how do you say, BAD! I allow the children to play with them when I am supervising and even then some of the things that come out of these childrens mouths. I of course correct them but they look at me like I was crazy. It's like no one has every told these children anything. Or what I have noticed is when they are chastised, their parents are so mad they just scream at them or 'hit' them with all their might.( I don't call it spanking because it is not. When you wait till you are so mad that you are trying to hurt your child that is hitting. I know I used to be one of those parents)
I know I am supposed to be the light of the world and teach others about Christ, but is it really at the expense of my children. Am I supposed to bring these children into my home and around my children when their influence and example is one of the reasons why I took my children out of public school.
I'm praying, pray with me...please

Sep. 7, 2007 - We survived the first week
So today is Friday and we have survived the first week of school. I have been so proud of myself. 8 am comes and we start school. Even this morning I was talking to my sister but I actually got off the phone because it was 5 minutes to 8 ad I knew it was time for school. (This is not normal for me I would have kept talking until I was done and just started school when I wanted to.)
What did the children learn this week: Check out my geocities website to find out what they learned by subject.
We did all subjects except Science and their elective.
Keep praying with me I am still not used to this yet. Today I had to take a nap in the middle of the morning I was exhausted. I made sure we had Bible/devotion, English, Math. We actually did two lessons in our ABEKA Phonics, Reading and spelling. (The kids like to do worksheets. They think they are fun.)
Anyway, check me out next week.
