• Saturday, June 24, 2006 - There's an old name written down in glory

There's a gospel song called,
"There's a new name written down in glory"

I'm not sure who wrote it, but they didn't know their Bible very well! I was listening to it the other day on a tape (yes we still use those ancient mechanisms called cassettes! :-) and I thought, "That doesn't sound right.  God isn't so subjected to man's will that he waits until someone accepts Christ to write their name in the book of life.  Can you imagine God sitting in heaven and waiting for people "dead in transgressions and sins" to come to him of their own accord so he can write down their name?
"Oh look, the white-robed angels sing the story - a sinner has come home! Now,write it down in the book of life."
I knew that was not so, but I was having a hard time finding the Scripture text that proves it.  Well, on Sunday mornings in church, we are reading through the book of Revelation, just reading a chapter each week as a Scripture portion.  Last Sunday - Eureka! There it was! The text I'd been searching for: Revelation 17:8 "...The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, now is not, and yet will come."

Here is the foundation of my salvation:  "Written in the book of life from the creation of the world." Decided before-hand,  "even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us  for adoption through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.  In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace..." - Ephesians 1:4-7

My salvation was worked outside me in the finished work of Christ, and then worked  inside me when God gave me new birth by the Holy Spirit and called me, enabling me to believe in the work of Christ.  At the moment I was justified by faith in Christ (saved) I was not then recorded in the book of life - I was proven to already have been in there from the creation of the world.
Or as Romans 8:28-30 more aptly puts it:
"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,  for those who are called according to his purpose.  For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified."

There's an old name written down in glory
And it's mine, oh yes, it's mine
In God's perfect plan for His own glory
To bring this sinner home!

There's an old name written down in glory
And it's mine, oh yes it's mine
With my sins forgiven, I am bound for heaven
Never more to roam!

nice going!

Good job coming up with Scripture which aptly supports your point. ^_^

We're studying Revelation in our evening church service.

In a way I think you are right. God has known always who will and will not come to Christ, but, that is because God is not in time. God is in the past, the future, and the present; for him, all of that is present. So, God knows that I will go to school tomorrow, because he is in tomorrow right now watching it. That isn't him being in the present, looking forward to tomorrow. And just like he knows that I am typing this right now, becase he is watching it, I'm not required to go to school tomorrow. God's watching me do it doesn't make me do it.

Not that I'm saying you don't believe that. It's just that if you get too caught up in talking about how God knows who will be saved and who won't, it makes it seem like you're a Calvinist, and like we're talking about irrisistable grace. Because my name is already written in the book, I have to come to Christ, right? But that is not true. Names can be erased from the book of life too (not that we can lose our salvation once we have it, but we can refuse to accept the gift that Christ has offered us.) Revelation 22:19 talks about names being removed from the book of life, I believe that is the reference. Forgive me if it's wrong. It's somewhere in the last paragraph of Revelation.

Anyway, I just wanted to clarify that anyone can come to Christ. Not only a special few were elected, who can't resist the grace of God, because you see that defeates the whole purpose of the Christian life, to tell others. If those who will be written already are, then we need not tell them about God; they are destined to know. The fact that you remained on earth after you were saved shows that people need to be told. There is no limit to atonement.

It could be, "One of the old names has been gone over with a sharpie. And it's mine."

I hope you don't think I'm trying to discredit or dog you. I don't even know who you are or what you believe. It just worried me to read some of that, and as a fellow Christian soldier, I wanted to drop you a little note

• Saturday, March 17, 2007 - your an idiot

your an idiot and If you keep thinking like that and not letting people know the true way to eternal salvation, you may just regret it at the throne of judgment. Stupid. You probably read out of the NIV or some other bible that is published by the same company as Penthouse and that takes the blood of Jesus out of the Bible. You need to get into a good KJV Bible believing church.

To angry KJVer,
Can you honestly call someone an idiot and claim that you have the love of Jesus Christ in you. I may or may not agree with the original post or the subsequent comments. Matt 5:22 "But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgement; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the counsel; but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire." 1 John 3:15 "Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him." Is there forgiveness for this? You bet. Father, please forgive this person who posted with such anger in his heart.

In Luke 15:10 the angels rejoice over over one sinner who repents. God lets us make a choice. Every name may be recorded but everyone will stand before Him to be judged.

Just a couple versus to think about. Isa 62:2; Rev. 2:17; 3:12 Names have a lot of meaning in the bible. A name displays the character ot the person. As I grow in my faith in Christ I am learning more and more about the new name God gave me when I surrendered to him. I don't bear that old name or character anymore.

I was looking for the song when I came across your blog. Keep up the good work! Your certainly not an idiot or stupid!! This world would be a lot different if we had more youth expressing a genuine faith in Christ. I know God has a good name for you. Don't let anybody steel it.

Apparently you haven't read the lyrics and given much thought to your comments. Apparently, you also haven't seen Revelation 2:17. The one who overcomes by faith will be given a stone with a new name written on it. Those are covenant words! Through our relationship with Christ, each of us has a new name. Do you know yours? Even the angels in glory don't know who will be saved, much less what name will be given to them. I agree that no new names are being entered (as if God Himself didn't know who would be in the book of life). But I try to be careful about criticizing those who have gone before us.
