What's going on around here?

Photobucket

Raccoon update:
Raymond cut open the bottom of our house and retrieved 3 baby raccoons whose eyes were not even open yet. 1 died, and 2 are living with a local wildlife rehabilitator.. A few days later, we discovered that there must have been another death, as the odor was telling. He doesn't want to go back and find it.... luckily it's spring and we have windows open so we generally don't smell it now. I'm too chicken to go under there... so hopefully it will be de-stinkified quickly on its own.

School update:
We are taking a break from schooling, but tomorrow will continue with our study of ancient Egypt in AWOA.
I have decided that the first 7 days of every month will be our school break, since I tend to do a lot of running around on those days anyway because that is when we get paychecks.

On our day 19 of Ancient Egypt, the kids completed their relief sculptures. They turned out very well. I wish I had pictures, but the batteries were recharging and then I forgot . Harley's broke, Trinity's is her name in hieroglyphics and Rowan's is a blue pyramid. It was great fun making them.

Fleas coller
The Flea War:

I broke down and decided to use pesticide on the lawn. It was a difficult choice, but my pets are more important to me than the other creatures out there, and God's word says " A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal." Proverbs 12;10. Hopefully the frogs are able to move out behind my house, where I didn't dust for fleas. I have coated all the carpeting with borax and sprayed all the furniture with raid for fleas. Princess looks wonderful, and has even begun playing- something I have not seen her do before. I didn't realize she was in that bad of a state. Tinkerbelle is STILL itching, but is in better spirits, and her fur is growing back SLOWLY..

4H-
This is our first year in 4H. Rowan is a Cloverbud, taking gardening and Harley is taking bike adventures II. We have not gotten our project manuals yet, but we are in the midst of switching clubs because the atmosphere of one was uncomfortable for Trinity who, I hope will be more willing to join this club. She also has a friend from her small group in it.  I think Trinity would enjoy it, especially since she is thinking about pursuing an animal related career. Anyone else out there ever do 4H:? I really don't know much about it.

Blog

The Beauty of the Lord has moved!

I found it frustrating to try and customize my blog at myhomeschoolplace, although it was a great community, and I will miss my friends there. I moved to my new location on blogspot.
Go on over there to check out my post on resting.

WORSHIP Caution Sign
Worship News:
I am in the process of setting up my audition for vocals on the worship team. In the meantime, I am learning a lot about vocal techniques at this free site: Vocalist.org
I am also still learning how to read music with my kids. I am planning to join the Leap of Faith choir for the summer concert season. Mark Schultz will be performing at one of our Praise in the Park dates. I wonder if we will get to sing WITH him?

Our Creator is really A GENIUS! Just LOOK at what He made in the deepest oceans- and he put it there just for us to discover! I love how He let us use the minds He gave us to explore our world!

all kinds of good stuff

I  found some really cool home remedies that work on FindArticles - 50 home remedies that work: these safe, fast, and effective fixes will relieve what ails you - Cover Story Natural Health, August, 2003, by Maria Noel Mandile

I have gotten over the initial sickness, but now I fear that I will develop bronchitis if I do not get this gunk out of my lungs!
It's annoying. Pray for me if you will, since I am joining the worship team at church.

We had a great worship service this weekend.......
You can watch  past messages at Crossroads Community Church
Last night''s was about What You Can't See..... the unseen forces in the world- demons, etc.

There was a fantastic skit put on by our drama team.....

The cats have flea Allergies, and they are miserable, so I am once again declaring war on the fleas.... But of course, we have to get the raccoons to move out first..... We bombed for fleas, and the raccoons are STILL here....  I have called a wildlife rehab place, and we will see what happens. The city guy came out and trapped an adult... and I hope it was not Mom...
There are babies now... and they are walking around. Hopefully Mom will move them soon.
We are taking a break from school right now, to try and get rid of the fleas- lots and lots of vacuuming....daily.... which I will begin in the next few days. Tonight and tomorrow, however, I will be resting and drinking a LOT of water:)

I am feeling overwhelmed- but I know where this is from.... Our Enemy....and he can go right back where he came from!

Oh- i got to see EMMA today, for her baby dedication. She's a cutie. It was good to see my family after being out here nearly all winter... As I type this, I hear a baby raccoon screaming.... please pray about that too- I don't want him to be lost and abandoned.

Got boys? have fun making a crossbow from pen and pencils!

This was  just so neat I HAD to post it .

I am sure that Harley will have a great time making his!

How to Make a Small Crossbow out of Household Items

This is a featured article. Click here for more information.
You can probably build your very own mini crossbow without getting up from your desk. No knives, wood, electric appliances or any other expensive equipment are needed. All you need are some basic office supplies, ten minutes, and these instructions.

[edit] Steps

  1. Line up two of the pencils parallel to each other and secure them with tape, leaving at least a centimeter untaped at both ends in order to leave a space for the rubber band later. Repeat for the other two pencils.
  2. Create a cross that looks like a lowercase "t" with the two pairs of pencils. Secure them in that position with either tape (electric tape works best), rubber bands, or glue.
  3. Unscrew the tip of a cheap or useless pen. Unscrew the other side of the pen, and then take out all of the inner mechanisms. (Save the ink cartridge because that will be used as the ammo later.) After doing that, you should end up with a hollow tube.
  4. Secure the tube to the vertical side of the cross with tape.
  5. Stretch a rubber band horizontally across the crossbow, anchoring it between the two pencils and going over the pen in the middle.
  6. Wrap a piece of tape around the middle of the rubber band where it passes over the pen.
  7. Tie a rubber band between the pencils and the bottom of the hollow pen. This is to add elevation, which will come in handy later.
  8. Put the ink cartridge back into the tube so that it's sticking out slightly.
  9. Stretch the rubber-band to the end of the tube.
  10. Grab the ink cartridge, pull it back further with the rubber band, and let go.

[edit] Tips

  • Try experimenting with different types of bolts (the "arrows" used by your crossbow). Some bolts might work better than others, due to their size, shape or weight.
  • The bow isn't very good at long distance shooting, so if you want to pierce something, shoot it from very close up.
  • Use a bendable ruler for the base. It will give a little more flexibility, offering more power when the projectile is released.
  • Use a binder clip as a trigger.

[edit] Warnings

  • Do not aim this at people or animals, even as a joke. Accidentally letting go of the rubber band from something as simple as someone bumping into you might cause a serious injury.
  • If made poorly, the crossbow won't work well and will be hard to handle.
  • Do not look into the end of the crossbow while loaded. Use common sense.

[edit] Things You'll Need

  • 1 pen
  • 4 pencils
  • 2 rubber bands
  • Tape

still got it

Hello
or those of you who asked.....
I am doing better, but this thing is just hanging on! I think the virus may have actually mutated and went around here again, or we caught another. Raymond started feeling ill last night. The only one who so far has not been sick is Harley. Got a LOT of housework and schoolwork to catch up on. Seemed like every time the laundry got almost caught up, someone was vomiting on their bed... why do kids always puke in their BEDS?
Even our cats have thrown up recently.....
Trinity and I are still dealing with chest congestion, and I am SO TIRED!!!!

And We have discovered that we have a raccoon or a family of them living right beneath our floor. Not cool.
They have destroyed some of the ductwork..... and they are noisy, and they are scaring our dog.

The park won't help, animal control in our backward town oddly enough does not have a license for dealing with wild animals(?!) and so far, we have not gotten ahold of anyone at the city.

So.....  I don't know what we are going to do. If we trap one ourselves, we can't be sure that there are no babies who will have to starve to death and then stink up the house hidden who knows where. And then there is the possibility of getting bitten......

I will be posting some more interesting/fun helpful things in the future....
Thanks for all of your concern and prayers!

Flu Season is NOT over yet

Well, I thought we were going to get out of this season without getting it..
The flu that is. I think Trinity and I have it. But- on the upside, my back is better!
Doc gave me some muscle relaxers and I took a few and then I didn't need them anymore, which is good because they were knocking me on my behind!

So Here I am today looking for nutritional/holistic help for my yucky feelings
Photobucket
I realize this is coming too late for some of you, but I will share what I have found anyway for those who may be looking for info.

Here is a site that has a lot of good  nutritional info  andthis one  has a recipe for "Sick People Soup".

If you want the CDC's info about the flu, go to CDC flu  and if you want to see the flu map of the US, you can click here and scroll down to see it .

We are using a new curriculum called  Learning Adventuresand it is fun so far, and very easy to use. The author must think the same way I do.
Photobucket
This summer we are planning a trip to see somecaves  in Wisconsin and  Minnesota.
Photobucket
I am going to go lay down now and readAnne Rice's "Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt"  Here is a little background and research info about the book

It is a page turner so far, and although not entirely theologically sound, not entirely improbable. It is about the boy Jesus as he grows up. The premise is that He didn't know everything about himself and is written in the form of a first person mystery told by the boy Yeshua himself.

I'm off. TTFN

NEWS

Well my niece Emma Grace was born on Feb 26th to my brother Randy and his wife Cathie. I had hoped to have a picture at this point to display, but I don't have one yet.

I have been having some awful back/neck/head pain as of late. I would appreciate your prayers for that:)

I am looking into a nutritional treatment for Rowan. I KNOW he has ADHD, even though he has not been diagnosed. My other children have it, as does my husband and I have ADD. Trinity and Harley's ADHD was interfering with their learning, and they have been on medication because of it. Rowan's learning doesn't seem to be affected by his ADHD very much, if at all, so I have let it go.

I have heard lately about
Omega 3 in treating it, so I decided to try it. I saw an ad for this in Family Fun Magazine:
Photobucket

It was about $7 at Wallgreens.  It contains DHA,  ALA and EPA fatty acids. The dosage on the bottle says that you should give your child 1-2 of these gummy fish a day. This is FAR below the dosage suggested by this article.
So I am now giving Rowan 5 of them a day( that is still lower than the dose they suggest). In the first week, I thought I had wasted my money. I did some reading and found out that it sometimes takes 1-3 months to see improvement. Since switching to 5 a day, I think I am seeing a little bit, enough to keep going with it anyway.
I might start giving it to my other kids as well. Trinity is already on the maximum dosage of Concerta, but says she feels like it isn't enough to help her control herself. I read recently that Concerta has some risk of heart attack. NOT something we need in our family when my husband has Familial Hyperlipidemia   and had a triple bypass at age 28. Incidentally, Omega 3 is also good for heart disease!
