Monday, August 17, 2009 - Well, it's time for a medical update... on ME.

Posted in Medical

Ok, I haveIBD of some sort. what kind doesn't really matter at this point. All that matters is that I am learning to look at food and nutrition differently and there are some foods I have to avoid like the plague, because of the symptoms ( wich are different from IBS- scroll down to see comparison on this link) I will experience if I eat them.  I won't bore or gross you out with the details here- you can click on the links.... I am taking new medications- can't say I am really happy about that fact, but I am glad that they are working so that I don't have the dreaded symptoms every day. Now I just have a bad day or a few bad hours a few times a week. That's a big difference. I was beginning to be afraid to eat anything at all because it was causing so much pain.
My GI Doc put me on a low acid, high fiber diet... well, that is hard to do when you are used to eating a lot of fresh produce and then suddenly, you have trouble with most of those things you used to eat a lot of. I called to let him know that eating those things caused symptoms and he said use an OTC medication like Immodium. I don't want to throw more drugs at the  problem so I have figured out my own way of handling the situation......

Some things on my must avoid list so far:
MacDonald's Sausage biscuits
chicken sandwiches
grapes
strawberries
cabbage
apples- in almost any form.
green onions
Split pea soup
Oxalis ( Shamrocks! darn! I really like those!)
peppers...
hot sauce
 pineapple

Some combinations of foods have affected me badly too, but I'm not sure I can remember all of them at present.

There are many foods i love, that I am afraid to TRY right now, but I might add them in a little later and see if i tolerate them.

Those are on normal days... on my bad days I have to almost have a pure liquid diet. So I got a cheap juicer, and buy drinks with added vitamins and minerals whenever possible. I can drink V8 juice too, which I love! I have tried Ensure and Glucerna, and those also help. My food /calorie intake has been drastically reduced, and as a result I am loosing weight- that's fine- a blessing in fact! I can loose quite a  lot and will actually get healthier as a result. I've gone down 2 sizes in the past 2 months.

On the flip side, I wonder how this will effect my homeschooling.....We did have BED-school a few times this year.... we'll see! It has tended to make me forget about food some times... and then have really late meals when I remember to cook! And I have had some days when i feel weak and tired/grumpy. The medications have made me very sensitive to the heat and so i am tending to stay inside and when I get overheated, have the kids take over some chores.

I have been keeping track of what I eat with USDA's My Pyramid Tracker. It keeps track of nutrients, calories, fiber and you can even enter your exercise or daily activities and it keeps track of your energy balance for today and over time. It's a great FREE resource, if you need to know what you are eating/burning.

I'm sure it could be a great resource for health class too! Yeah, You might be a homeschool Mom IF.... you can turn ANYTHING into a school lesson and have a hard time NOT thinking  up lesson plans when you hear about something new! I actually looked for lessons on IBD for the kids...  and KidsHealth actually has one !  Now if only I could find a booklet, unit study or worksheet......I'll let you know if I find one!
Ok, I need to join Homeschool-aholic's Anonymous... " Hi I'm Chrysalis and I have a homeschooling problem....."
Just nod your head and smile!- you know you think this way too!
