Tuesday, October 13, 2009 - Homecoming Day, or why I Like Butterflies

Posted in About school

Homecoming Day, or Why I Like Butterflies
It’s October 13th, 2009. Petra’s Homecoming Day. The day she left this earth for a better home… 9 years ago. I no longer feel like being sad on this day. If I spend it somberly I will have missed a day of my life being sad. There is a time for weeping, and my time for grieving is over.…. Done with that work for this particular loss. There are lots of losses left to grieve still, but this is not about those losses. It’s about GAINS.
During her short stay on earth, Petra brought much joy to many. She seemed to have too much personality to contain in her tiny body! Her smile melted hearts, and grabbed all attention. I will always remember her wrapped cocoon like in receiving blankets in the NICU. Even then I pictured her as the caterpillar who would one day fly higher than her imposed limits.
Since she had Down Syndrome,  we tried to surround our little girl with things that would catch her interest, and hopefully stimulate her brain, to give her the best chance at a normal life. Butterflies are very eye-catching. I began to make use of their beautiful bright colors when I had a chance to.  A poster of neon technicolor butterflies was affixed to the plastic sheeting on her stainless steel crib where she spent her days and nights at the hospital. I found a plush caterpillar toy bigger than she was. It was a light turquoise color, had stubby little wings, striped legs with sneakers,  and it giggled uncontrollably when she moved(… or when a nurse attended to her needs… or it felt like it… or whenever you didn’t expect it to and it could make you jump!)There was a large vividly pink butterfly balloon that we bought her for one of her surgeries. It was so pretty, I couldn’t throw it away when the helium was used up.Raymond taped it to the window when she moved to another room so that it could be seen from the highway when our truck driving brother in law came through. We added countless other bangles and push toys to her bedroom, but there were always butterflies.
And one day, she flew away to be with Jesus. It was messy and horrifying for me to witness. In the same way, when a caterpillar has to go into its chrysalis, it looks unpleasant. The poor lowly creature turns into a sort of soup as its cells get rearranged before it can rise to glory, as another of a different kind. Sounds scary, and painful. But maybe it isn’t. I don’t know. What I do know is that it sure is a whole new wonderful thing … being a butterfly.
When we drove the long 40 miles up to visit Petra in the medical center, we used to play that old song  by Seven Day Jesus…. “ I wanna be a butterfly…”

Normally, I take this day off of school and  remember her. This year, we are studying insects, and we have decided to participate in The Journey North’s symbolic monarch migration. Today is the deadline for mailing them, so we had a little bit of school getting our butterflies ready.  How wonderful to do something positive on this day! I had planned on getting some more done today too… but the Lord’s plans were different.

Today, it happened that my nephew, Nick was online and chatty.  At Petra’s funeral, I gave one of Petra’s toys to each of her young relatives. Nick got the laughing caterpillar. I am unclear to this day whether he took it home. My sister in law Montana, put her toy in the casket  with Petra’s old tent.Nick may have done the same.  ANYWAY……..TODAY He made comments about my status on Facebook… it isn’t unusual to see me talk about God in the status update box.
Nick popped up in chat and I was thinking that  I only had a minute and was already running late with my plans today. MY BIG PLANS… my plans are NOTHING!!  As my friend Barb once said, it should be us going where God goes, not taking Him with us as we go about our lives…So, being what day it is… I was thinking of Heaven. Nick was saying how much he loved God. I told him I was going to Heaven and that he could know that he was too…. It just FLOWED.  God was working, and I was just going with the Spirit as He blew into our chat. It was just… CHAIROS. Divine timing. God stepping into time.
Nick got saved! My nephew is now my brother… funny how it happened through this family relationship… like my own story. I was helped to find Jesus by one of my favorite uncles , and became his sister. And that story had much to do with Petra and her life/my loss too.
And what a way to celebrate a life! What a great day! What a GREAT GOD WE SERVE! What a wonderful Savior! We took the rest of the day off  :) After all, it is Homecoming Day….

Monday, August 17, 2009 - This school year has BEGUN!

Posted in About school

Trinity has officially begun high school at home this year. YIKES! We are still using Math Mammoth- available from the official site or from Currclick. It's the one we are sticking with because of it's ease of use, affordability and best of all, it's all download-able so it's GREEN. Be kind to the earth, and steward it wisely!
New this year- Learning the Write the Novel Way ( made by KONOS)- Trinity dislikes writing, but has been creating a story and characters and a whole fictional world in her spare time. I decided we should go with the flow! This is an all inclusive language arts program for Jr high/ high school  that can be used repeatedly. It is writing intensive which is great since  IL law has changed regarding graduation requirements for high school... although whether that applies to homschoolers, is unknown, it is better to be safe than sorry! To find your own state's laws, go to HSLDA.
Another new curriculum- in fact our main course of study this year is  Training Our Daughters to be Keepers at Home Designed for those who believe a woman should not work outside the home, this curriculum is full of home ec skills, and has scripture used throughout. I do not share the author's opinions on many subjects, however, for the mother who has not acquired skills such as sewing, gardening and the like for whatever reason, I find that it is excellent. I will be learning many things with my wonderful girl, and I think that's great! It should serve both of us and the Lord well, wherever life takes us.Here is a review site of Training Our Daughters with LOTS of information about the program and how to use it. We have chosen to allow Trinity the choice of home-making courses as individual units and used the Godly Womanhood section for her Bible/Character. When her gardening is done for the winter, she will be taking embroidery in its place.
For the time being, Trinity will be with her brothers for American History and Science from A New World of Adventure.-  the second year of Learning Adventures. Trinity has had her first week of school with me and is having week 2 with her grandmother. I am hoping to foster independent learning for those subjects that are routine. The boys will not begin until September.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 - Summer Adventures Part One- Harley

Posted in About school

The weather has been LOVELY here- not a hot day yet- and I AM SO THANKFUL, but, the kids don't share my enthusiasm for the prolonged springtime. They would rather be using their pool  passes Our local public swimming pool  has not been open every day yet.

4-H Project Geology, Pebble Pups I
So anyway... Sunday, we took a trip out to Viroqua, WI to attend the gem and mineral show. We got lost- this time it was not my fault- Raymond was driving, and we got there just as they were closing. I was not happy, to  say the least. I stayed in the truck while Raymond and Harley went inside and purchased a few specimens. Then, we found out that there was a rock shop in town, so while the kids stayed in the vehicle, we picked up a few items for Harley to identify ( without telling him exactly what each rock or mineral was).

hematite ring My wedding ring got  oxidized during a chemistry experiment, so Raymond picked up a hematite ring for me there and put it on my finger. It is a steel grey/blue color and shiny. The whole thing is made of rock instead of having a rock on it. It's a cheap replacement, I know, but it is sweet, and I felt much less grumpy after that.

Raymond also stopped at a roadside rock quarry where the kids dug through the rubble and found many interesting composite rocks.  Harley has a lot of identifying to do before the fair- just about one month away!

Herbalism

We purchased the kit from Learning Herbs.com and Harley began his journey to making medicine from herbs. This is a great starter kit, with lots of free gifts and access to a site that has lots more information, including worksheets and tutorial videos.

Today, Harley made a healing salve- useful for minor cuts, burns, scrapes and insect bites. It was a lot of fun. We are going to give a little tin of it to  each of the married couples in our family when we get together this July 4th weekend. We have a big jar and a smaller jar for ourselves as well.

Harley is very happy to be learning so much this summer!

Sunday, May 24, 2009 - The garden is GROWING!

Posted in About school

Our maple trees have been prolific in raining down their twice yearly loads of helecopter seeds. We spent some time picking them out of our garden, and ripping out a pesky dandelion that had managed to take root.
Here is a before picture of the squares.

That's the West one and here is the East side one

and this is the strawberry planter

The other day we discovered that we needed to water the garden- I know you probably think this is a no brainer- but I thought that if you planted the garden and it rained every few days,
you didn't need to water it.

Our marigolds were drooping and the tomato plant shriveled... nothing was sprouting that we had sown.

I tried to hook up the hose- only to find that it didn't  fit well, and got a shower!. So, we improvised.... I had gotten the kids some water squirters  They work sort of like a syringe- you pull the inner part back while holding the tube under water, and it sucks up the liquid. Then you can push the plunger back in and shoot water out of it. So we used bowls, and water squirters to soak the 2 Square foot garden beds.

Today we have some sprouts- the pumpkins, beans, and watermelon are showing themselves.

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 - Our Square Foot Garden

Posted in About school

I have decided to use Training Our Daughters to be Keepers at Home for  part of Trinity's curriculum this year. While this curriculum does have some VERY  conservative and old- fashioned ideology, I feel that it will help prepare Trinity for life on her own, no matter which direction her life takes. She was interested in many aspects of home economics that I  was not the least bit knowledgeable about.
My ambition in life as  child and young adult was to work in some science field- never to be a homeschooling mother! God's plan was so much more ME- so much fun and so fulfilling-  I wish  I had known earlier in life where he would place me. So, when I became a wife, and had children shortly after,  I did most of my homemaking training on the job- not an easy task!
I just don't want her to have to go through that-  and this way I get lo learn right along with Trinity and have a great time with the few years we have homeschooing together. I really enjoy being with her every day!

So anyway, Trinity chose to get a head start on the gardening aspect and use it for summer school, and the curriculum specified that we use the square foot method. I know NOTHING so I follow DIRECTIONS in this area.
Yesterday, we mixed together 2 bags of perlite- because vermiculite is tough to find, 60 lbs of compost and manure, and 8.8 cubic feet of peat moss.. I'm sure the neighbors were wondering what we were doing making this huge mound of DIRT on the concrete pad in the lot next door.
We used 4x8 construction grade lumber  and 3 inch galvanized shank nails to make 2 boxes, each 4x4 feet, for a total of 32 square feet.
After filling them with the soil mix ( it was windy today, so we got quite dirty), we used 1/8 inch braided nylon cord  to create the grid. The official square foot gardening web site said we could use screw eyes to anchor it... HA! as soon as I tightened the first knot, the darn eye came right out! I had to improvise- with some smaller nails, we anchored the cord on the top and then again on the sides by pounding the nails through it halfway and then bending the nails over to hold the line in place. It worked well.
The curriculum says to start with seeds- but we were anxious to see something growing in it, so we cheated with the marigolds and  tomato plants. We also have  some onion sets to put in tomorrow.

Harley is going to have a perennial herb/medicinal garden out back and fill it with some of things we can't put in the squares because they self-sew or take over. Ecinacea, chamomile, and mint are going to go first.
Rowan will be planting strawberries in a container, and broccoli in one square. Trinity has planned 2 varieties of lettuce, some flowers, watermelon, carrots, potatoes, pumpkin, cucumbers, and purple green beans. This is going to be FUN!
I will bring pictures when I blog next!

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 - HImmel Und Erde

Posted in About school

You GOTTA try THIS!!!

Because I said sO It's called Himmel Und Erde--- German for Heaven and Earth, and our first recipe from AWOA curriculum in the mini unit about the reformation in Germany.

It's yummy!

4 medium potatoes- cut into cubes

2 granny smith apples sliced

one onion- sliced

1 lb bacon ( or if you are vegan or Kosher- use your favorite substitute) cooked and chopped

1 tbs salt

1tbs sugar

1teaspoon nutmeg

water

2 tbs butter

OK- you can see by the ingredients that it is a comfort food- NOT a health food- moderation!

Boil apples, potatoes salt, and sugar in about 1 inch of water unti tender. Drain. Saute onions in bacon grease or your choice of oil/butter until tender, drain. Combine apples, potatoes, bacon, onions, butter and nutmeg  and stir gently. Serve.

I had no idea that it would taste the way it does. I think that I would change the recipe in 2 ways- I would cut the apples and potatoes to the same size and also add some freshly ground black pepper- but other than that,, I can say that this dish is very tasty!

The older kids, who are picky were not impressed ( Trinity does not like potatoes- need I say more?) Harley ate the ingredients after seperating them on his plate and scorned the onions. I liked it, and Raymond almost didn't get seconds because Rowan was begging for a third helping....

Sunday, February 22, 2009 - Renaissance and Reformation

Posted in About school

Well, we have ended our studies of the Middle Ages, and are moving on to the period of reform in the Church and re-awakening of the arts.

Yes, we are still using the AWOA curriculum, and I still love it, although, to tell you the truth I am finding that one main drawback to it is the recipes. They are fun to cook, but  with everything we have gone through, sometimes i don;t have the funds to go out and buy fancy ingredients, and my kids are picky eaters, so I have begun to skip a lot of cooking.

Isaac Newton Pictures, Images and Photos

We are reading a Biography of Isaac Newton, and have had some nice discussions about his life so far.
He was a premie, not even expected to live, but he did. His childhood was full of wonderful learning adventures that I hope my children will imitate. He was a devout believer in God and learned the Bible and prayer from a very early age.

We only have 60 days left of our curriculum for this year!

I will post more about what we learn as we go on

His Words Have Not Fallen on Deaf Ears

Wednesday, August 22, 2007, 11:21 AM CST [General]

I had a sore throat yesterday, so during our morning Bible reading, dh read my part. It was from 1Corinthians. As he spoke the words of life, they leapt out at me... and I found myself deeply convicted. I was reminded of things I knew once, but had forgotten, and was granted new insight.

I know that my children need instruction to gain more from their reading....and I heard :

"Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. " 1 Cor. 14:8-9

To me, this was clear call to work on our communication skills- a confirmation of what I had already begun to understand.

I knew that reading was not the most important thing to stress, but the individual gifts of each of my children. God made them a certain way for a certain purpose, and all of us are given gifts.  I heard:

"So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church." 1 Cor. 14:12 Called attention to the fact that I needed to use my gifts more in schooling. After all our family is an extension of the church, and I should be building it up.

This brought to mind the theory of multiple intelligences- the idea that there are many kinds of honorable talents that a person can possess. In our culture, we tend to look at only 1 or 2 types, test them and base our decisions about how productive a life someone will have in the future based on those few things. It also reminded me that tests cannot tell the whole truth about how well a person is doing.

That got me to thinking..... Maybe the type of test we used was inferior. It was a free test put out by a company that wants to sell products that boost reading skills. When I looked at each of my children's reports, they all recommended the same 3 products to help them get back on track- even my youngest, who was placing above his grade and age level.

For another thing, yes, dd has had a  past diagnoses of language learning delay. When she came home from public school, she struggled with those fill-in the-blank worksheets. You know the ones where there is a list of words to use at the top and you are supposed to find the one that completes each sentence?. Well, those were terribly hard for her. For some reason, even after instructing her, she failed again and again to recognize that the words at the top were the ones she was expected to use, and she just pulled words out of the air. The part of the test she didn't do so well on was that type of thing- except that each question had a choice of 4 words. I remember that when she took the test, she commented that for some of the questions, more than one of the words would fit. Then last night, I heard her telling dh that she thought it would be funny to put the wrong answer into some of them. But then she pushed the back button and redid the questions! If you have ever filled out anything online, you know that this is probably what messed up her result. It does show good reading comprehension, by the way, when you can make the sentence silly with one or more of the answers!

So.. I found another site that is supposed to help reading comprehension and it had a free test. this site isn't selling any products though. The good news is that dd placed only 1 year behind- 5th grade- and she will be entering 7th this year, which is expected, but can be worked on. The bad- or at least kind of scary news is that her first grade brother is  also testing out at 5th grade!

It wasn't too much of a surprise- my middle ds tested at 5th in 2nd grade..... and his comprehension has come up to average. So I got kids at all points in the spectrum.

Some more of the Bible reading for yesterday was Psalm 37. it's all about living to please God and trusting him..

Trust in the LORD and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

4 Delight yourself in the LORD
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

 5 Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in him and he will do this:

6 He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn,
the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

 7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when men succeed in their ways,
when they carry out their wicked schemes.

 8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;
do not fret—it leads only to evil.
