My dh went to get his blood tested ( he has a genetic cholesterol disorder that caused him to have a triple bypass when he was 28, so he gets it checked regularly).
ANYWAY..... I am sick, so I wasn't there, but he told me about this and
I think it's neat.
In some kind of backyard magazine ( don't know exactly which ) Had an amazing article about a group of tadpoles in a puddle that was drying up. The father ( says the story) was pictured next to it.
He was digging a trench from one shallow pool to another bigger one. Not long after that first picture was taken, he had completed the construction job and all of the little tadpoles had gone to their new home. I wish I had
seen it. I looked in My Big Backyard's web site, but couldn't find it...

Now that Winter is coming, will you drag out the electric blanket? Do you sleep on a heated surface?
Is this a good idea, considering the human body's inclination to adapt to its environment?
I have a theory... because we do adapt and change. I think that sleeping with artificial heat makes you more prone to get chilled during the hours you are awake as well as when you sleep.
Back in the days of Laura Ingalls Wilder, it was not unusual for people to wake up in the morning with frost decorating their blankets in the winter months. I cannot imagine sleeping in a room so cold, but people did it, and survived. People didn't often use flannel or jersey sheets. Blankets were sometimes knitted, crocheted, woven or quilted. There was no micro-fiber or fleece covering. Beds were made of straw-tick, down or whatever they could stuff them with.
As a child, i slept in sheets that were absolutely frigid when I got in them, but that after a time, warmed sufficiently enough to let me sleep well. I sometiems slept with my window open when it was as cool as 50 F. I still prefer to sleep in a cool room. Unfortunatly, my bed is situated above a floor heating vent. There is not much I can do about it, because the bed ( being king-sized for my almost 7 ft husband) does not fit anywhere else in the room.
Before that, we had a water bed....it was heated.
I used to walk around all winter with my jacket open, no gloves and in the house I never wante to wear slippers. as I could not stand to have warm feet.
Now, I get cold in the daytime. I wear slippers, and I cove up at night even though the heater is under the bed and it keeps me kind of warm.
I wonder if this is caused by sleeping with aritificial heat? |
