Combaton Pictures

~ Madeline and her friend getting ready to do battle~

Combaton is a sport that combines Tae Kwan do, soccer, football and basketball. For more informationabout this sport

click here to www.combaton.com visit the website

Most of the players are black belts so it is an honor to have Madeline on the team as a sr. green belt.

It's nerve wracking for me because I hate to see her knocked down and hurt but she loves it.

Her friend in the picture is a black belt also.  It's a co-ed sport so the girls have to stick together.

For those of you who know me personally no, I didn't run out on the field with bandaids but I did chase her around with a water bottle and sunscreen.

Baby steps:)

Riddles

Ariel's LLATL book assigned her to write a riddle. We just read an Encylopedia Brown story, studied code writing as well as Morse Code.

Here is her riddle:

I wander in and out the house
I am furry and sweet.
I can jump from great heights
And I can land on my feet.

What am I?

Madeline is doing test prep work but loves riddles and wanted to write one too.

Here is her riddle:

Cradled in my arms of stone
I leave you to the monotone
As moonlight's argent glow beguiles
Silhouettes of deadened smiles

Vacant eyes foretell our fate
Livid membranes dissipate
Whitewashed walls in scarlet throe
A frost which stills the afterglow

What am I?

What have you learned this year about homeschooling?

Every year I learn new things about homeschooling.

This was our first year of high school

I learned...

                           I bought too much stuff.

Teaching Textbooks for Algebra is awesome!!

We did too many outside classes

My children learn the most from reading , discussing subjects with me and hands on activities.  Not so much from answering fill in questions.

I want to do high school the Dr. Wile way.

http://www.highschoolscience.com/

(Scroll down to handouts for an outline of his methods)

This was my original plan but somehow I got sidetracked with co-op classes and virtual school and all the other high school books people were recommending.

I think it's good idea to take CLEP tests for college credits rather than dual enroll.  Your child can study at home, at their own pace and then take to test at the end of the course.http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html

Update:Some colleges don't accept CLEP for credit  However the college dd wants to go to does. 2/25/06

I plan on having my daughter take this test in May after completing Apologia Biology.

Thank you Patricia for the idea!!

TKD, Worship Band, Nursing Home Ministry and Small Group with other high school students has done more for my daughter's well being and future any than curriculum I planned.

Although these activities cause a lot of stress sometimes due to the heavy academic load she carried this year I really think these were more important.  Next year I think we can do just as many credits at home with less stress using my child's learning style.

Isn't that what homeschooling is really about?

Please share what this year has taught you?

January Highlights

 Spelling Bee

1/06

Three homeschool groups combined to have a 1st-8th grade spelling bee.  Ariel chose to participate.

The competition was tough this year.

She studied 50 words a day for 3 months and practiced the hard words several times and the result...

She won 1st place for her division.  I'm so proud of her:)

Madeline is standing with the nursing home ministry team from our church.  We have been the worship team for this group every other Saturday.  I play guitar and Madeline sings.  The residents also lead several songs and they have blessed us so much we feel they minister to us equally.

Madeline also volunteers her time in the worship band  for the Jr. high fellowship at our church.  This isn't the best picture but she is to the right of the lead singer in front of the bass player.  There is a girl in a white coat jumping up and down in front of her.  The kids love the worship time:)

November Happenings

We have been busy the last few months.  This post will cover some of the November happenings.  Ariel is really enjoying her co-op.  The Germany pictures are from her co-op Christmas around the world.  The event organizer had the kids write something nice to each of their fellow co-op students on strips of paper to make a friendship chain when they get home.  She had a little paper stocking for each of the children to place their strips.  Ariel said this was her best stocking ever. J  The group focus this year is mainly on geography and cultures from around the world.  She is also learning science, music and dance in this co-op.

She loves to play with her friends, write stories, draw anime cartoons and loves children’s church.  If everyone is dragging on Sunday she is usually the one to say “Come on everyone, lets get to church!”  She just wrote and sent her picture to a pen pal in UkraineShe decided she would take a break from

taekwondo for awhile and take up swimming lessons again.

Madeline’s high school co-op is covering biology, geography and a world literature discussion group.  They have labs every other Tuesday in biology and here is a picture of the edible animal cell she made for that class.

She chose Germany as well for her geography Christmas project so she will be using the same display but hand in a report as well as a presentation for her class.  We may try to make lebkuchen for her presentation since our friend in Germany says that is what everyone in her village serves this time of year.  She just finished The Scarlet Pimpernel for literature class.

Madeline is also involved in yearbook, worship band, nursing home ministry, youth group and Tae kwondo.   Her dad went with her to TKD camp last weekend.  He earned his yellow belt at camp.  Madeline was named top camper and received a trophy as well as her green belt.

She also learned her bo staff form and one of the instructors gave her his weapon because she was so dedicated to practicing the form.

These activities are in addition to the curriculum we use at home to cover the basics so we are all pretty busy but very happy to be schooling at home.

Christmas in Germany

Frohliche Weihnachten!

Our co-op hosted a Christmas around the world program and the girls researched Germany.  We decorated a gingerbread house, make pfeffernusse cookies and an advent wreath.  My dear friend lives in the village of Wilferdingen near the Black Forest  in the southwest portion of Germany.  She sent the girls information about Christmas and some pictures for their report.  Another friend let them borrow dirndls from when she was a child and her father was stationed in Germany.

Each presenter brought a food to taste from their country. We had a wonderful time and learned so much about Christmas around the world.

My Daughter the Environmentalist

Last night I was on the phone with a friend.

Hubby has been working late for over a month and I am in desperate need on adult conversation. We were talking about high school record keeping and transcripts, curriculum and what God is teaching us. My youngest comes up and pulls on my leg

"Mommy, Mommy I have to tell you what I saw on TV!"

She is notorious for retelling me a whole episode of her favorite cartoon and she has a birthday coming up so I assumed she either wanted to tell me play by play about her cartoon or the lastest toy she wants for her birthday.

I calmly told her, "Honey, can you tell mommy about it when I get off the phone?" She said yes and I ran her bath while I continued to talk with my friend. I was on the phone a long time so she interrupted me about 4-5 times saying "Mommy when are you going to get off the phone.”

When I got off the phone she said "I saw on TV that you can clean your toilet with Vitamin C tablets. You just drop them in the bowl and leave them there for 2 hours then flush"

She read in her library book that bleach flushed down the toilet harms the sea turtles. Last week she came to me frantic. "Mom you have to stop using bleach to clean the toilets!" I replied that I can't have mold growing on my toilets and bleach is the only thing I know that keeps away germs and mold. So the wheels in her head have been turning ever since and now she says.

"See mom, maybe you can use the vitamin C so you stop killing the sea turtles."

Homeschool Day at Epcot September 2005

 Homeschool Day at Epcot

September 2005

After a presentation from natives of Italy and Brazil we started our journey in Germany with a giant pretzel.

This is the middle of the village square in Germany.

Italy - Epcot gave the children passport notebooks to stamp at each country.

Africa - This gentleman was carving and polishing wooden sculptures.

China - The lady stamping their passports wrote their names in Chinese beside the stamp.  The girls were very pleased.  Ariel posed with Mulan who just happened to be there.

Norway - Love those Viking hats.

Japan - The girls are very interested in Japanese culture.  They study Japanese language, popular music and the art form anime cartoons.  They were very curious to try the candy Pocky so we purchased some from the gift shop and the girls were thrilled.  The kind lady at the passport stamp area also wrote each of their names in Japanese on the passports.  Then we grabbed some lunch.

Our waitress told the girls in Japan you don't use spoons to eat your soup so they tried the Miso soup Japanese style. The waitress then helped the girls make an origami frog that was in the passport notebook and wrote "Thank you " in Japanese on the receipt.

Morocco - The ornate detail on the swords in the museum was beautiful.  Also the bead work on the headdress and clothing was exquisite.  Everyone was playing some sort of percussion instrument, even in the shops.  This time, (you guessed it) their names were written in Arabic on the passport.

France - We ran into Belle in France.

We also visited Mexico, UK and Canada but we were rushing to get every passport stamped and didn't get pictures of these countries.

It was really a wonderful day and I can't wait to go back and see the rest of Epcot someday since we spent all day learning and lingering in the countries.
